got my actual numbers in, here's the key bits:

LDL total 283
LDL 201
HDL 67
Trig. 76

couple of oddities:

BUN/Creatine ratio 35.7 (supposed to be between 6 and 25)

Ketones in my urine registed 15 (1+), supposed to be negative.

I also asked for an LDL subparticles test. I have "Phenotype A" which means I have a lot of the large fluffy good kind.

Still, in spite of the high HDL, the low Trig., and the abundance of large LDL, my crazy doc. wants me on meds. In fact, on the report, she circled the LDL number and hand wrote "terrible! needs meds!"

Naturally, I laughed her off.

But I am curious about what to make of that Bun/Creatinine bit...

I assume the ketones number is all good because I dont eat sugar or starch.

they also sent a graphical report of my profile, which I can barely make heads or tails of. I'll scan it later and post it, if I can. the thing clearly shows that most of my LDL is the large kind, only a dramatically smaller amount is the smaller type.

and still, she wants me on meds! unbelievable!

Hi McFreddy! We have to be our own doctors sometimes. I've declined Lipitor offers myself.

There's a website called labtestsonline.org that might shed some light on your bun/creatnine question.

Hey there MrFreddy - Just a bit of positive from me re the ketones. Chemically as you probably know that's just fine, in fact it's great when I see the pink into darker pink on my strips when I still have a lot of fat to lose. A funny story about the ketone strips - even at Walmart pharmacy I had a pharmacist once who refused to sell them to me! They are kept behind the counter even though they're not prescription. I asked for them by name and he asked me if I was diabetic. I replied "no" and he said I shouldn't be needing them. If I did, then I had "serious health issues." I just laughed at him, too! I just figured I 'd wait and come back when he didn't work. He really was adamant about not selling them to me!! I think most of the medical community still doesn't get it about the low carb - physical symptoms connections between so much. My take on your situation is, GOOD FOR YOU, don't get the meds, and find another doctor! That is, if you can even find a more reasonable one who isn't sold out to the industry. Keep the PP faith!!

For info on Bun:creatinine, check out:

An increased ratio may be due to a condition that causes a decrease in the flow of blood to the kidneys, such as congestive heart failure or dehydration. It may also be seen with increased protein, from gastrointestinal bleeding, or increased protein in the diet.Of course "normal" ratios are based on eating a "normal" low-protein high-junkfood diet. So a high level may be normal for us. Next time you may want to eat less protein & drink more water right before your blood test.

I have a cat who sometimes has higher than normal ratios and the vet says not to worry unless we see an ongoing upward trend. At other times the ratio is within the normal range, so it is probably just his hydration level.
