Nutritional maintenance of your health requires vigilance and effort most of the time, interspersed with occasional brief vacations from the straight and narrow.
Staying Power tip for this week

This one caught my attention. It's true that occasional brief vacations don't seem to cause me a problem. So I tend to let them become more frequent and less brief :o . A couple of bouts of post-prandial hypogycemia, together with nudging up just slightly ( a pound or two) in weight finally got the message through that a bit more vigilance and a bit less vacation could be called for  . That's why, when I put my September goals up, I made 60g carb my maximum, rather than average, as it is normally for me. I'll use this month to re-establish "metabolic control" then see about relaxing a little back to 60g average.

I recently bought a copy of the 30 Day Low Carb Diet Solution, just to see how it presented things (£0.34 from Amazon.co.uk marketplace!). There was a list of questions - the usual sort of thing: do you have high bp, anybody in your family have diabetes etc. I said no to all of the first group, which were really indicative of existing diabetes, but said yes to three of the next five, which were indicated some level of insulin disorder. Sometimes, because my weight is now normal, and don't have diabetes, I tend to forget that I really don't do well with lots of carbs. There may be people who can live on rice and bread, but I'm definitely not one of them.

So, more vigilance and effort, and less vacationing for me  . What about you? How are things going?

Since moving here, two years ago, my vigilance has slipped somewhat. Whether it's because there is so much NOT available here, or whether I used that as an excuse, I'm not entirely sure.

Things I rarely ate before - split peas, rutabaga, carrots, parsnip, became part of the menu again, as I started to cook "Jiggs Dinner (http://www.joycesfinecooking.com/Ethnic/jiggs_dinner.htm)" (aforementioned, plus potatoes, cabbage and salt meat).

A few additions here and there don't seem like much, but can accumulate into a pattern.

I could blame things on lots of situations (job seeking, Basic Training and all the "away from normal" types of things), but that's just using excuses, and doesn't solve anything.

That's what I have to watch out for, too. A small piece of bread gradually grows; a small serving of starch every few days becomes a medium serving every day...

My husband is losing weight at the moment (70 lbs so far this year), but when he reaches his goal and starts to add extras, I'll need to watch that I don't add any more, because I'm already maintaining - so extras would take me upwards!

I just got back from a real vacation/ road trip visiting new grandbabies and did pretty well with NOT vacationing from LC. It seems to get easier and easier to stay on plan under many/all circumstances. I have found that I do have to continue very vigilent, but it seems to get easier and easier with time on plan. indulgences were:

1. alcohol--a lot :D ( new favorite low carb cocktail--easy to order out-- vanilla flavored vodka and diet coke!)

2. some of the Mrs May's " just nuts" almond and coconut flavor, yum-- Really went overboard on this while driving. While fine for a small snack, the midless dipping into the bag was not so hot--lots and lots of calories :D did better limiting on the way back; took out a snack size portion and put the bag AWAY!

and 3. sushi, which I love! since it was a real vacation/celebration meal, I ate more rice than I usually allow myself. didn't have a carb hangover so it wasn't too terrible! had lots of plain sashimi tuna with it as well so the protein profile was good anyway!

Upshot of the 10 days--2 pound gain--hopefull mosly water that will be gone post haste!

I haven't had any further losses for over 6 weeks now which is a bit discouraging. I would still like to lose another 5 pounds before I call the losses done, but staying is also good. as long as the 2 pounds doesn't turn into a trend then this 6 weeks is actually the longest I've managed to stay at this lower "maintainance" weight for the past 3 years!
