At last! The secret we've all been waiting to hear - how to stop your waist from expanding :D. Dr Mike's blog, Protein in the diet leads to thinner waist (http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/archives/2006/10/protein_in_the.html#comments), reports on some Danish research (http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/84/4/789) looking at over 40,000 people for five years, and analysing the effect of their diets on their waist sizes. The take home message from this Danish study is that if you want to minimize the growth of your abdomen over time, you should eat meat, avoid vegetable oil, eat non-starchy fruits and vegetables and avoid sugar and refined grains. Hmmm, I've heard that somewhere else.
For those "women of a certain age" who have a particular interest in such matters, the study's participants were aged 50-64. I've only read Dr Mike's blog and the study abstract, so I don't know how much protein and carbs these people were eating, or how big the changes in waist measurement were.
