Nut butters that have the oil floating on top... short of taking this to Home Depot and borrowing your paint mixer upper, how can I more easily mix this? Or do I just stand there and mix best I can? Is there a trick?

use a knife - a spoon can bend -
once you get it going it gets easier - vertical at first works better than trying to actually mix back and forth -
I have a mixer with a 4-prong beater - it works pretty good for this -
like this:

no - I don't use the mixer - just the attachment in my hand -:)

I let mine sit over night in the oven (the oven is off, of course :p ) or heat it in the microwave before trying to stir it. In my experience, the warmer it is, the easier it mixes. Then once I have it mixed, I store it in the refrigerator so it doesn't re-separate :).

Yeah, you just have to do it by hand. I don't have any other advise then what they've said above. But, I still have to add my two cents! :D

I do prefer to put it into a bowl to mix it--then back into the jar. it seems like it would be messier ( well you do have the extra bowl to wash) but i find it easier--no oil slopping onto the counter and you get all the really hard part up from the bottom and thoroughly mixed in.

oh--and that's when I add some salt and a drop or two of splenda as well ( that's right I'm a hedonist:D)

I add 4 or 5 drops of SweetZfree and warm it up a bit as well to mix it. I still have some hard stuff by the end of the jar and use it in cookies, etc..

Currently Costco is selling Organic PB at close to regular PB prices and it is incredible. It tastes better and for some reason shows 1 ECC/Tbs. when PB is usually 2. I wonder if it is a diifernt type of peanut or whether they include teh skins on a smaller peanut to get that number.

I don't store it in the fridge since it seems to lose a bit of flavor when cold and is harder to spread. Also I try to have it used up within a month. I have noticed that when stored longer at room temperature there is a mild cigarette ash smell to it (nobody smokes in our home).

The fresher the jar of peanut butter, the easier it will mix. I tend to gravitate to brands that do not require a cement mixer to reintegrate. Then, I can just just leave the jar turned upside down overnight and mix with a dinner knife or chopstick.

One other tip is to store the jar upside down for a few days before trying to mix it. The oil will be on the bottom of the jar when you turn it over and it won't slop all over the place when you mix it.

Michael (hubby) came up with this. We have a hand mixer with 2 beaters. We put the beater with the extra knobby thing on it into the mixer and sink it in and out of the jar of butter a couple of times to loosen up the butter a little.

Michael puts the jar in the kitchen sink on a paper towel and holds onto the jar and I hold onto the mixer and turn it on starting on low and then going up to high. It works great, but it IS A TWO MAN/WOMAN JOB.

I take a spatula and transfer the almond butter to a bigger and more shallow tupperware dish w/ a cover. It is then easier to stir by hand and remove. Nothing else to do. Just store & eat. I have a lot of other neat tips.

Got Smuckers chunky natural peanut butter. Heated it in MW for 1 minute on medium. Scooped it out into glass measuring bowl. Mixed pretty easily with a butter knife. Then put back in jar. Far easier than trying to stir in jar.
