Hi! I am glad to be back to a regular format, the yahoo board was just to much to keep up with, but now I am back. I have an issue with my Dr over my thyroid levels. I do not have the numbers, but I do know I need to have my synthrid upped. I still have cold hands and feet and feel chilly. Plus I gained about 10 back ( but still have kept the other 40 off) and am having the darndest time trying to lose it again. I know part of it is that I have slipped into maintenance level too easily, and with my job fall prey to the sabotages all around me. ( Like I just ahd to try a small piece of the Irish Soda bread one of the agents made, but at least I added lots of butter on it, so as not to make it too horrible). bUt what kind of ammo do I need to convince her to up my meds or is there an alternative natural way to achieve the same thing?

Barbietre, hi--I remember you!
What would happen if you just emphasized that your symptoms are continuing/worsening to your doctor? How would s/he react?

At the next visit I will bring it up again, but she irks me because she still wants me to go on Lipitor. And since my health has been good I have had no reason to see her since my yearly in Nov. I guess part of it is that I have not seen her since then and she has the thyroid numbers in the work up. But she made sure she sent me a copy of my Cholesterol tests.

Barbietre, if your last blood workup was November, there's nothing wrong with repeating it if your insurance would cover it. Endocrine system issues like thyroid can change a lot in four months. What are the cholesterol numbers that make her think Lipitor is the answer? Is there a way you can head of that discussion by knowing, in advance, that your ratios are within healthy ranges, or are even the ratios off far enough that she's concerned?

Hi Barbietre. How do you feel about finding another doctor to treat your thyroid? Most just don't get it when it comes to hormones; typically a doctor who follows a naturopathic approach (who can still prescribe) is your best bet. The Armour Thyroid website has a "Doctor Find" feature; most docs who use Armour are more open minded about treating thyroid, and better at it, IMO.

I agree with the advice to find a different doc--preferabley a naturopath and one who is familiar with Wilson's syndrom. Go here: http://www.wilsonsthyroidsyndrome.com/ and see if you don't find yourself it the symptoms!!! You can have BOTH low thyroid function--as in not enough being made in your thyroid gland AND wilson's syndrom which is a problem with converting T4 to T3 ( which also comes up for women at perimenopause due to other hormone imbalances.) if you are not converting, your test will show normal numbers whcih is probably why your doc is resisiting upping your dose--and adding more synthroid (which is all T4 )is not going to help anyway, Wilson's syndom is controversial and not all docs subscribe to it but doing the protocol totally helped me, and I am ( finally) in the process of losing the TWENTY pounds I re-gained last year WHILE eating totally PP. ( have lost 12 of 'em--yay!)

I did 3 cycles of timed release T3 ( per wilson's protocol) and am now on Armour ( 3 grains is what works for me at this point) My temperature is now normal for the first time in years and years!!!

Thanks for your information Relief...I'm going to look into this further myself...since I have LOW temperatures too. (96 ~ 97) I spoke with my compounding pharmacist the other day about this, and he mentioned supplimenting me with something he's going to put past my Dr to get it okay'd..and I didn't write down what his suggestion was! He said that should help me boost my metabolism.

Then I remembered you wrote this...Wilson's hum...I'll have to ask my Dr. further about it. At one point I wasn't converting my T4's and was only on synthroid...then he put me on Armour. I take 100mg of synthroid, and 90gms of Armour now. Another reason why I love my new Dr..as my former Dr wouldn't listen to me.
