I know that there is a minimum amount of protien one should eat per meal depending on one's height and weight, but is there also a maximum amount?

Someone will be here with the book answer soon, but I know that it is better to go over than under. I have to work at getting up to my minimum.

I never have trouble getting "enough" protein - my problem is that I usually go WAAAAY over my minimum. Somedays - I more than double it. Not sure that's good, either... but coming to PP off Stillman's is harder than I thought it would be.

Welcome.

I suppose it depends how often those "somedays" happen. I average about 50% above my minimum.

It also depends where your protein is coming from: are you eating very lean sources like protein powder, egg white, white fish; or are you eating a lot of cheese, steak with fat, whole eggs ... which come with a lot more calories. Small people, and those near to their healthy weight often have to be a bit more careful about the quantity of food (calories).

Are you finding it hard to lose weight? If you need to lose weight and aren't, then I'd look at reducing to a bit nearer your minimum protein level, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

What is Stillman's?

And the other question I had beside what is Stillman's is what is your protein intake made of up? If you are eating lots of processed kind of meats, ala peppeorini or deli meats etc., you are also having a higher carb count than you realize.

There is no maximum amount but that also has caveats I think included. Why are you so hungry? Is it habit or are you burning alot on exercise or workouts? If you minimum protein requirment for the day is 90grams I think many people go over that, I think though if you are jsut starting out, I would follow the program a little more strictly and see where you go. If you are hungry however protein is the thing that will give you the most satiety.

Welcome!

As far as the maximum amt of protein intake, are you asking if it'll be dangerous to your health? Can you please give us more info on the angle of your question?

For me, who just recently had kidney surgery back in October, I asked my urologist. (Since excess protein may be dangerous if you have kidney problems/damage. Please get the proper tests with your general practitioner/family physician for BUN & Creatinine test, I think is what they are. Your MD will know what the kidney tests are.) My urologist said I can still LC & as far as my protein intake, as long as I don't eat a 22 ounce steak  at one sitting I'll still be okay.

Stillman's is the diet that most people stereotype as the "low carb diet" - it is meat and eggs and cottage cheese.

My protein comes from those sources. I don't even like processed meats like pepperoni or deli meats anymore - they just taste weird to me now.

Mostly, I just have to get used to eating veggies regularly again without going absolutely nutso.

And enjoy the wonderful veggies and fruits, they are so much apart of good health, loaded with vits and antioxidants. I love this program!;)

I try to stay no more than 50% over my minimum because I am pre-diabetic. I may be too cautious, but since extra protein can be used to create glucose, I choose to be safe than sorry. Actually, with PPLP allowing such good veggies and berries I don't have a problem over indulging in protein. But coming off Stillman's you might find it a bit of a challenge to allow yourself more veggies and fruits. But I think you will find PP (or PPLP) so much easier to stay with due to the variety of food it allows.

i'm glad that someone started this thread, as i am having problems with protein intake as well.

my problem is that i have a big appetite. and without realizing it, i've actually been eating close to twice my daily minimum protein amount. because if i only eat what my body requires in protein (or a little bit more), i'm still hungry. i never get full. :(

so i've been trying to figure out what else i can eat with my meals to fill me up once i've gotten in my minimum protein amount (besides more protein). i figure for lunch and dinner i can eat more salads. or cooked vegetables. but for breakfast.....? i'm not sure. this morning i had 2 eggs with corned beef, and i scrambled the eggs and threw some broccoli in to try and fill myself up better. but what if i dont want to do that every morning?

**edit**

and just for the record, i drink 1 1/2 cups of liquid before eating, and another cup afterward :)

phantasmagoric - Some people say that fat fills them up better than protein. I don't know how you are on dairy - but maybe throwing some cheese in with those eggs, or having more eggs to begin with, or adding other veggies in with them would work for you. Fiber is very filling too - have you tried flax seed meal or anything like that?

Shadow,

I find that to be absolutely true. When I eat only lower-fat meats, I become hungry very quickly. It's always amazing to me that I can eat a lot of chicken and broccoli and be hungry an hour later. Adding some cheese or putting a little bacon into the mix helps me a lot. Also, sauteeing the chicken works better for me than simply broiling or grilling it does--I think it's the oil I use to brown it.

Ruth - Sounds like you're at my house since those are the very things I do to keep hunger at bay :D!

After 6 years on PP, I quite naturally eat my minimum (81g) without thinking about it, but a couple of months ago Mike Eades' blog talked about a study where people who eat 100g/day lost more weight. Since then, I have been aiming for 100g (23% above my minimum). Since I enter everything into DietPower, if I am a few grams short at the end of the day, I'll top up with some protein powder or other easy protein. Normally I stall when so close to goal, but that hasn't happened this time.

I've also found that fat is more satiating and I feel best physically & mood-wise on ~100g/day of that too. It is also cheaper, my main reason for not consuming lots of extra protein!
