Hi, I am having a tonsilectomy on Wed. From what they told me, it is very, very difficult on adults (I'm 37.). They said that most people lose weight, which is an extreme positive for me. Of course, I do not want my body to go into starvation mode, but I want to use this as a good opportunity to really get back into this WOE.
I have looked at the shake section: can any of you give me some good smooth, creamy recipes of any sort that will be good during my recovery. They also need to be easy to transport to work when I go back next week.
I have thought about shakes and soups with added protein, any other suggestions?

Omlette, this is "ally's" shake recipe... I love it!
"My regular scoops of Vanilla Protein Powder... 1cup of plain yogurt.... 1/4c pumpkin (yes out of the can lol) cinnamon and allspice to taste and just enough water to make it to desired thickness... blend her up and enjoy! Depending on your protein powder and brands etc will determine your ECC... :)"
I have subbed 1/2 cup strawberries and appropriate spices (dash of vanilla, etc); OR not even done fruit...
It's the BEST shake I've tried... and, believe me, I tried a lot, LOL! I ESPECIALLY like this when my throat's sore, as it's very soothing... hope it's the same for you...
Good luck on your surgery... when should we start getting worried about you??? Check in, will you? :)

Thanks sherry. I will check in by the end of the week. I'm sure I will be on here a good bit tomorrow.

You might also consider Kefir, either with or without protein powder and added ingredients. It is a bit tangy and I find it very refreshing. Because it's loaded with probiotics, you can count 4 ECC per cup (for plain) rather than the 10-12 that is listed on the bottle.

I had my tonsils out at age 12 and remember it very well!!! not so much fun. If your recovery is anything like mine, even the shakes will be too much for the first few days. hot things like broth and tea and cold things like plain Ice water were the only things that felt OK going down. I wonder if you could up the protein in broth somehow? ( without it tasting nasty)
I remember feeling so gypped because ice cream STUNG so much and they had promised I could have all I wanted.

I had mine out as a n adult and did have a pretty good recovery.
Any crushed ice mixed in with protein shakes will help if you sip it during the day.
The day you know your are truely recovered is maybe 2 yrs down the track when you get another really BAD sore throat and realise how much pain you used to put up with before LOL

Thanks everyone. I bought a big tub of plain yogurt and a bottle of keifer yesterday. I already have frozen berries in the freezer. I also bought a bottle of Diet V8 fruite medley. My son loved it last night. I thought I might could use it for the base of some of the drinks. I also bought some organic broths, hopefully able to add nonflavored protein powder.
The one other thing that I bought was choc protein powder. Mix it with heavy whipping cream and very little water, and it turns into pudding insead of a shake.
Oh, frozen fruit pops without added sugar.
I'm banking on this being bad to really help me get over the hurtle of craving sweets and getting my tailend in gear losing weight. I checkin at 8:15 in the morning.

Omlette, take care of yourself. Looking back at when I started the plan (and began my love affair with the cinnamon hazelnut mocha shake for breakfast)--I'd only been on plan about six weeks when I had a double root canal. That was the time that I was able to truly get my sweet tooth under control, while recuperating from the oral surgery.
Also...I wouldn't bother adding protein powder to broth. When you're able to actually handle broth, beat an egg yolk (not the whole egg) into it. This doesn't thicken the broth up too much, nor will it increase mucus production (which you'll have to be careful about) but it will add the protein you're looking for. As you are more able to swallow, you can beat in the whole egg, and maybe even some finely grated parmesan...taking it from egg drop soup to stracciatella (see recipe forum, main dishes, for a recipe.)
Feel stronger fast.

Thank you all.
I had the surgery yesterday, and all went well. I am very, very sore and swollen today. I made a protein/fruit smoothie this morning, but I have only been able to get about 1/2 of it down. I have to eat it with a spoon, but I have a hard time opening my mouth. I am currently drinking plain orgainic broth, which really makes my throat feel better. The warmth.
Galean - thanks for your suggestions on the egg in the broth. I am also going to try some hot and sour soup in a few days (hopefully). Mentioning the mucous production, I have a horrible time with post nasal drip fro allergies. This has been on point that has really bothered me since the surgery.

Omelette have you tried crushed ice, that really helped my kids when they were healing. Kind of froze the tissues so it felt better. Do what the doc says, recovery is hard but it will be so much better soon

1/2 cup frozen blueberries + 1/4 cup heavy cream and a pinch of stevia mixed with a blender or Magic Bullet = delicious & throat-soothing blueberry icecream.

HI all. Thanks for the well wishes. I can't do cold stuff still. Warm stuff is the only thing that really seems to help. I know that seems weird. I think I have been living off of hot tea. I have drank some broths and bought some hot&sour soup when my hubby got Chinese the other night.
I made a mistake with the soup I chose yesterday, and it caused mucous production. The good note is I'm down 10-11 pounds. Of course, it is not the right way, and I will have to be very careful when I start eating again. I did manage to get 1/2 a scrambled egg down on Sat. I may try a deviled egg tonight or tomorrow.
Thanks Deirdra for the icream recipe. I love blueberries, so I may try this later today.
