"Goitrogenic foods include the cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, rutabagas, turnips, kohlrabi, kale), millet, peaches, peanuts, walnuts, pine nuts, radishes, spinach, and strawberries. The isothiocyanates in these foods reduce thyroid function by interfering with the activity of an enzyme called thyroid peroxidase, which helps normal thyroid function by adding iodine atoms onto thyroid hormones. Soy, a staple in the vegetarian diet, is also a goitrogen and appears to increase T-4 without affecting T-3 levels. Isoflavones in soy, such as isothiocyanate, block the activity of thyroid peroxidase. Ultimately, this impairs thyroid function and can lead to weight gain.
Nutritionists and physicians recommend limiting intake of natural goitrogens but not eliminating them, since soy and cruciferous vegetables provide other proven benefits."

Humm.....I learned something STRAWBERRIES are one of those fruits...and I've been having "issues"....hum.....curious!!! and of course, I like cauliflower, and broccoli and spinach.....and eat them as a veggie more often then not....hum..........curious. I guess I need to take my OWN suggestion and take a look at this..as this could be interferring with my plan BIG TIME!
Thanks for bringing up WALNUTS! :D

I wish there were more detail on what limiting means?
I take thyroid medication, and don't want to interfere with thyroid function. On the other hand, those are some seriously good veggies there, in terms of micronutrients and fibre and net carb counts. I want to continue to eat enough veggies.

Hrm, interesting.
So, I have taken almost no interest in my thyroid since starting meds and getting the level set. And I didn't take a lot of interest before. So, there's a world of surprises. Strawbs and Peaches are staples.
will look into a replacement for walnuts. Hrm....
On the downside, pretty much all of the melatonin rich foods are carby. Cherries, soy, bran, wheat, and so on. Not so good.
On the upside, studies show that the melatonin-sleep connection is tenuous at best. Better to go for the tryptophan. Meats, cheeses, soy stuff, peanuts, etc. More choices there. Though at least one site suggests that protein inhibits serotonin production and therefore fights the sleepy. I am always skeptical.
Any rate, thanks for the help Missy.

Sorry to say Max....gotta watch the SOY and the peanuts TOO! In my journal, I'm discovering MORE about this subject since starting this thread.
Mustard is a no no too!
I too thought I had all the "thyroid" issues well understood...as I know I'm getting a good level of thyroid meds..and my dr and I seemed happy with the level on the blood tests...but that was after a fast...so? perhaps eating a steady diet of these food choices has been interfering all along...and CONSIDERING my "difficulties"...ah, this is something I need to focus my attention on.
Wakefield, ahhh YEAH! I agree...these are some of the "good ones" and exactly my veggies of choice. Darn it all.
Granted, "some" is okay...but quite frankly...till I get my weight loss a purrin along...I'm NOT going to eat these things.
They say "limiting" is one cup/ three times a week....and "they" say cooking them reduces this goitrogenic effect...but, quite frankly, I'm going to err on the side of extreme cautious...and have NONE and know EXACTLY the "list" so I don't mess with it, for now as an experiment.
The link I gave above tells "more" Wendy then I cut and pasted.

If this is the case, then meat is pretty much all I can eat. goodness, what veggies are left to enjoy. Same for fruit.

This is only if you have a thyroid condition that you have to be careful with these types of foods. There are plenty of other choices...and you don't have to cut them out all together, but limit them weekly.
All I know is that I cut these food choices out completely and a couple of side effects that I was suffering from dissappeared. Dry skin patches in my eyebrows, dry skin on my forhead and a dry patch on my lip that wasn't going away regardless of how often I used chap stick...gone.

I'm hypo and I'm on Levoxyl. Maybe I should eliminate some of these foods and see if it changes my weight loss.

Ah well. Back to cannibalism I guess.

Some foods and drinks have an opposite effect on the thyroid gland--that is, they stimulate thyroid function rather than suppressing it. These include those including caffeine (coffee, tea, cola, and chocolate). It is also believed that avocado, coconut, and saturated fat can stimulate thyroid function.

Yep Dan....that's why I added drinking regular coffee in the morning..and I do feel the extra 'push'.....and I was of the whole consensus of "Oh! Gotta cut the caffeine!" thinking previously. You know..like the 'low fat' business.
Kathy, I'm hypo, synthroid and armour..and well, my theory is "why not give it a try and see?"
