Kites rise against, not with the wind. No man has ever worked his passage anywhere in a dead calm...John Neal

I don't know who John Neal is... I just like that quote. I think that life is like that. Always against the wind.

But the windier the day... The higher the kite can go. If it's not windy it just stays on the ground. I'll vote for the wind.

Thanks for the funny joke at the end of yesterdays post Randy.
Today feels OK. Not a lot of pain.. I think I may be able to focus on something else for a change. Like an Upper Body workout. My husband is home playing build a porch , so I think I'll stay here and work out at home.

I hope you all have a windy day today. Soar High...!

I'm soaring...Hawk!!! I'm soaring!!!

I had a bigger breakfast today, hoping to counteract the hunger I had yesterday. I have always been a "big breakfast" type of person, so why do I try to fight it now??

So...my meals are planned. I didn't realize how fatty my meats were today-not until I did the counts in fitday... yikes :paranoid:! So, I'm trying to revamp my mealplans, even though the food is already packed and cooked and planned...*sigh*...I hate that!

Have fun all....soar high!!!

Hawk ... great way to start the day!
I was working on it when I saw your post.

Morning Amy. SOme camping Pics follow.

I am at that point (I hit it a few times a year) where things have begun to overwhelm me. To many committments and not enough time to fit them all in. Even my camping stuff is not unpacked since my wife knows it will be strung about and set the rule "It doesn't come out unless it is going somewhere specific." (Laundry, shed, rafters, etc.)

Nothing here to fear" TORI AMOS

Today is an IF day (3rd this week) and tonight we have guests for dinner, Strips of Flank Steak (Montreal Steak Spice, Lea and Perrins, and Franks Red Hot) over a garden salad and some sort of berry/yogurt dessert. They will be wondering why I'm having seconds of everything but it will still come out to under 1300 and I'm feeling great.;) Today is a Resistance class at lunch which puts me 3/3 on eating and exercise.

I was working on a web page for pics from the trip but gave up for a while until I get the other camera's pictures.
We had planned going to Pine Island (http://www.lastoutpost.com/ACME2007/ACME2007.JPG) but were warned by the rangers about a Wood Cockroach infestation and setled on the North shore instead. We had moose come by several times (early morning and after dark) right up to the campsite (30 yards). I'll link a few pics here just so you know what incredible weather it was and what great guys I travel with. I'm not in many pics since it these are from my camera and we don't have teh others yet.
The lake was incredible and we swam/fished/hiked/canoed every day but one. Most days we were the only ones camped on the entire lake except 2 nights another group (from Vermont and the woman in the pic with the dog stayed with her friend). These are about a meg apiece except teh movie file showing the beach.

Gary Taubes book Good Calories Bad Calories arrived yesterday and I am reading it with great interest. I am appalled at the political pawn Medical research has been and appraently continues to be. I was also impressed, in the chapter on Diseases of Ciilization the discussion on missionary doctors and their reports on native populations before the onset of flour, rice and molases. Cancer was almost absent in native populations on a native diet! I found that incredible. Also a lack of appendicitis and ulcers. Amazing! Yes when they started on our westernized diet they started experiencing all these diseases. I did not know that. Good book. Well researched. I hope it makes an impact.

I'd be interesting hearing more as you go on with it.
I've read before that the introduction of processed flour and white bread is at the root of most Pacific Island obesity.

Ottawa...BEAUTIFUL pictures! That looks like a pretty big lake! How cool that you had it to yourself for an amount of time!!
We go to pretty SMALL lakes, and RARELY get them to ourselves!
Sorry the fishing was so bad!!

Thanks Amy. We did catch several Bass on a river bit I was skunked this year.:o I did catch a snake and put it in John's jacket pocket but it's not the same excitement as that initial jerk on a fishing pole.:D

All the people both at the start-off point and in the interior were Americans, one from Florida and another from South Carolina. If you ever want more info or links to large scale maps let me know. The Vermont couple timed it to drive through the night and set out on the lake as soon as they arrived. It is $10/night and the sites are usually separated by line of site.

Best but most grueling trip (http://www.lastoutpost.com/ACME/ACME4-Radiant.JPG) Many portages but a fairyland lake all to yourself loaded with Bass.

Worst ever trip (http://www.lastoutpost.com/ACME/ACME-Eustache.JPG) A killer portage to a deep lake with almost no fish. You meet no one since they all knew better. Hiking out we were debating leaving an old heavy canoe since we were so sore.

Amazing pictures Ottawa! How wonderful you go on those trips with your friends. I remember one from last year. Good for you! I wish I had pristine lakes even semi-near me. Love the dog in the life preserver. :-)

Great photos, Randy. Too bad there wasn't more fall color when you were there! I love the "mirror lake" shot, especially.

Lynn, I'm glad you're feeling better today. Front porch or back porch?

Benay, that sounds like an interesting read. Knowledge of the "whys" is helpful when I'm having a hard time sticking to the straight and narrow.

I started the day with great resolve, knowing that I might be facing some cravings from my bad day yesterday. So far, so good. I even turned down a homemade goodie that would normally shake my tree. I had a high-protein breakfast and lunch and I have to make it a point to drink more water than usual. Sometimes "usual" is pretty dry.

My boss is home sick today (with what I had a few days ago :paranoid:) so I have some quality time to work on a project that has been on the back burner for too long. Yay! I hope I can get through it all.

We had a few thunderstorms last night and it's much cooler and less humid today. It can stay like this until Christmas! Have a good one!

Afternoon everyone!

GReat photos, Randy!

Having a great windy day today, Hawk!

Had the left-over steak from last night's dinner for lunch today. Looked in the freezer to see what's for dinner - dh has another business dinner/party tonight. Have no chicken breast left, so, either a stop at the store for some or for something else, or, I took some more steak out to defrost in fridge. If I pick up something, we'll have the steak for Thursday's dinner - rib eye, this time.

We did have some Italian sausage in the freezer, but every menu I think of with it (that I like) includes carbs of some sort and I don't think the Dreamfield's is good for me.

Later!

Our trips are not organized trips although Paddlefoot (http://www.paddlefoot.ca/adult_adventures.htm) offers some excursions. For anyone who has canoed/portaged small distances you are better off with a group of friends. You can bring your own equipment (best) or pick it up at any of the Portage Stores (http://www.portagestore.com/).

After the first weekend in September no interior lake is full (in fact they are almost empty) so you can review the Algonquin map (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~crpalmer/algonquin/alg2.pdf) (a little outdated but quite detailed PDF) and select a Lake/River. You pick a route and then just drive in and get your permit when the ranger station opens (8:00am) or you can arrange it online I believe. The Norther access points offer more solitude and you rarely meet many others after a few portages.

If you are going through Ottawa you can borrow my canoe and if going direct you can bring it with you or arrange a drop off. The suppliers are very hospitable and last year we forgot a few items and had to rent our life jackets. A huge storm came up and a lot of stuff including my life jacket was blown away. There was no charge, I just had to give the lake that it happened on. Out of the 18 trips there have only been 2 we have not seen large wildlife (moose, deer, bears).

"I've never met someone a few portages into the interior that I couldn't be friends with." Randy Holmes :o

okay...I googled the Algonquin Park and found out...it's West of Ottawa, north of Toronto...

sorry, a bit EAST for me...but if you ever want to travel over to the west a bit more (like MN), then I'd LOVE to take you into the BWCA...I promise, we won't stop fishin' til we have a huge spread of a meal!!

We usually go out of Sawbill Outfitters (http://www.sawbill.com/). It would be a 20hr drive (1000 miles)...are you up for it??

Amy ... you've almost stolen my heart ... but it's a little too far away.;)

I have sent for the free Map and Route Guide and will check it out. I retire in 3 or 4 years if all goes well, and I love the wilderness ... a few weeks every year.

All the best.

I will say this...our area is not nearly as void of people as you describe your area. We always run into somebody...but the fishing is GREAT!

We have never gone without catching at least one 22inch northern pike. We go on the outskirts of bass season, so we've only caught a one pound bass once, but the northern are PLENTIFUL!!
And a 22inch northern almost feeds four!! I can't seem to insert a picture though...

...onions, mushrooms... I used to saute it with hash browns, but I would think the beggy or squash would be even better. I also make a kind of stew with diced tomatoes and zucchini (both come canned as well) with garlic and basil and tarragon (instead of fennel) and even oregano. Cook it slowly for a couple of hours.

How about spaghetti squash instead of pasta?

YES for today ... a little early but I'll correct tomorrow morning if wrong.
Had a great workout class at lunch with a strength trainer using weight sand body resistance. I have to mark my weights and leave them there rather than lug them to class but it is a small price to pay for workplace training and they have a lockup for the weights.

We are having guests tonight so I'll enter the food now.

Thanks for all the ideas, but my problem is, I really don't like sausage. I saw the sausage and said, AHA, Sausage, but I think it was really just a disguised way of saying "carb-fest".:paranoid:
Like when dh requests loin of pork with sauerkraut and says, let's invite someone over. It's a sure sign that he's craving mashed potatoes and creamed carrots and applesauce:cool:.

My fav part of sausage and peppers is the peppers, onions, and tomato sauce - if I eat one little piece of sausage it's alot.

So, really don't feel like the steak and it was still frozen solid, so, I'll have a couple of hamburgers instead. DH made creamed cauliflower last night along with the green beans, so I'll have a veggie fest instead of a carb fest:D.
already had a big bowl of salad, so I will keep temptation down.

It's so frigging hot here today. I want to clean and do an exercise video, but don't want to turn on the air.

got a ton done at work and did my kind deed for the week, too:D.

Trust me, I understand.

I've got steak marinading and I'm going to oven roast it. I've never done that with steak, but Max did it a few days ago. I'll make spaghetti in pesto sauce for the guys. Funny, but that's usually a safe side for me to fix because I don't usually want pasta. I wish I could get that way about potatoes! :frown:

The step is coming out and the music's going on. I have to get done before "The War" comes on or I'll interfere with the television. Darned small house, anyway!

Had to sub today and I am to tired to walk or tread, so guess I will take a no for the day. I did good protein and carb wise tho so on plan with that.

Protein 122 ecc 29 (if I eat a snack after while) I don't know if I will or not . May be to tired.

Carol,

I found a recipe when I was still trying to decide WHAT to cook that had you broiling the steak with the oven door open. It sounded really interesting, but not the thing for high 80s in September:evil:

Plain spaghetti doesn't really do anything for me - I could always give that up - it's the "shapes" I like.

The hamburgers were not that good but they were a low carb high protein item:p.

I am a total YES for today:D
it's still a little early, but no way I'm gonna' ruin my yes - 'cos

I DID IT! I got so SWEATY! I did a cardio with weights dvd. I can't feel my legs, and I can feel my shoulder blades a little too much:lol:.

One of our house guests from last month sent a thank you gift - a box of peaches from a Harry & David's. They SMELL divine.
When I was a kid, there was a peach farm out near where I spent my summers. Those were THE best peaches ever. I haven't had a peach come anywhere close to my memory of those peaches.
These smell like they just might. The nutrition label says 2 peaches is 19carbs, 1 fiber. So, if I eat one smallish one, I'll be okay. But, I want to wait until they're perfect. Maybe tomorrow night;)

I kept my YES!

DH had a peach when he came in. He offered me a bite, but NEAN:D.

The he ruined it anyway, by saying they're soft, but not that sweet. Would it be mean spirited of me to make him eat another one tonight:evil:.

I can feel my legs again, as well as my shoulder blades, but there is a hollow feeling in my stomach:rolleyes:

No, surely not! It was only high sixties up here, though.(finally!) I marinaded and roasted the steaks--they were sizzlers--and they came out to die for. No pasta. Had a request for potatoes and I only made 2 servings and NEAN for me. Congrats on your cardio workout with the weights, Agnes!

I get a YES for Wednesday, Max! I also put in a half hour of combined exercise, including the step work. Since I've gained weight and become soft this summer from inactivity, and the doctors don't seem to know what advice to give me, I did some research on leg aches on my own yesterday. I ruled out some serious things and it seems to boil down to circulation problems which can be helped with--you guessed it--exercise! Tuesday I could hardly get around and I think it had something to do with the weather. Yesterday, I was walking much easier so I got moving. Today my knees are a bit tender, but no other repercussions. Okay, I'm babbling now, but I feel like I've made mental progress.

Carol//ever thought about researching RSD? THat's what it causes...lack of blood circulation and pain.
Riding the excersize bike, whirlpool, deep massage, sympathetic nerve blocks all help. What ever it takes to increase blood flow.
