Good Morning.
Listening to the entire Rush catalog, album by album, on my commutes, and came across the song "Dreamline," from Roll the Bones. The chorus goes a little something like this:
WHEN WE ARE YOUNG
WANDERING THE FACE OF THE EARTH
WONDERING WHAT OUR DREAMS MIGHT BE WORTH
LEARNING THAT WE'RE ONLY IMMORTAL --
FOR A LIMITED TIME
I don't think we have to be young for that, but, maybe I'm still young so I don't know. But ultimately, as I get refocused on the goal, it's about valuing the dream. Then we can count the cost as well as pay the price for it. This rambles and makes no sense. It's a good song though.
Any rate, I continue reading Good Calories, Bad Calories. It's gotten a little more dense on the science, and no less dense on the players (I think I need a scorecard), but am at turns angry, sad, and frustrated. The knowledge about the evils of carbs is older than me, and some of it is older than anyone I know. The skepticism on the evils of fat and saturated fat is at least as old as well. And yet, here we are, as a world, in a Low Fat, Eat Less, Exercise More paradigm that simply doesn't work for your average human being.
I'm reading about cholesterol and insulin, and the theories about particle size are 20 years old, and by theories, I mean observational studies with consistent results. In fact, the study results date to pretty much the measurement technology. Yet, here we are, worried about LDL, not about LDL size. Here we are, worried about Triglycerides (rightly), but with dietary recommendations that are basically designed to make em worse, not better. I think back, a year and change, when my doctor wigged me out about my cholesterol, when really, it was low triglycerides, good HDL, and a decent ratio, indicating big fluffy LDL (fewer LDL particles, more LDL cholesterol per particle). And my doc is a youngish guy. So you'd think he'd be up on the emerging research of 20+ years ago. *sigh*
If you are wondering what the big deal about carbs is (I suspect no one here is that, but maybe you've forgotten), GCBC is a great read.
Rock on.

I ordered the book almost 2 weeks ago from Amazon along with a non popular CD (CRISPIAN ST.PETERS) and it still hasn't shipped. I really look forward to the read.
Today is on track and I head out tomorrow morning to a 35th Wedding Anniversary.
It was to be a large event and I'm close with this BIL, but was dropped to just family dinner after a fitness check at his work showed extremely high BP. Further checking showed very high blood sugar as well. They sent him home and he asked us to tone down the party to just a meal and family.
OK..so I ordered it. It never hurts to reinforce it in your brain. The cholesterol thing is what started me on this road. I had a doctor who looked at my 202 cholesterol with 75 Hdl when I was 32 and put me on a low fat diet. I had never been over weight or had any health problems and naturally ate low carb. It was just the way our family ate.I turned into a vegetarian. I gained weight.Became allergic to many things. My cholesterol sky rocketed. My blood sugar and blood pressure became elevated and I gained 30 pounds over a 10 year period.sheesh.. I still have the cholesterol report with the flagged 202. Knowing what I know now I would have laughed at the doctor.
Today is LBWO day. The lower body has worked out. I refrain from calf raises. They're large enough. I did not have pain from the work out. I need to get on the bike later for the increased blood flow in my leg. I dread it.I need to work out a solution to this dread. It is a mental challenge. I always get there. It's pointless for my brain to have such a conflict.I have to . It is more important than eating.
Randy..Anniversary gift of a new Protien Power Life Plan book may be appreciated.

Him and his wife both think low carb is pretty weird. His wife had amazing sucess on WW's two years ago but they both tend to follow mainstream health care and have both gained.

If you think they might read it (it is a BIG book, though it seems like there are 200 pages of notes), Good Calories, Bad Calories might be a better read. Talks about the history behind the low fat paradigm early in the book (we are really talking about two studies that were undertaken with low fat as a healthy diet choice, and they had conflicting results, and this was the basis for the last 30+ years of diet/nutrition advice... two studies with conflicting results). Talks, over the course of the book, about the hype on sat fat (lays a serious groundwork for this first), about insulin resistance (again, with introduction so it's not out of left field), etc.
If he's got high blood sugar and high blood pressure, he probably has Metabolic Syndrome. I would bet dollars for LC donuts that he also has high LDL, low HDL and high triglycerides. Generally a recipe for a lifetime of medications to treat each symptom. Or, you could go with the only treatment for the underlying syndrome, a controlled carbohydrate diet. FWIW, I think GCBC is a better book for an interested non-believer than PPLP. When you look at how flimsy the case for the common knowledge stuff really was (and remains), you might hear the grinding of mental gears you get when a paradigm shifts.
Course, if they're not gonna read 400+ pages of diet science history...

Thanks Max. I was looking for a small gift last night at Costco and nothing hit although I did pick up a set of "Old and New" hockey cards for him.:D
He would not read the book ... but his wife would for sure since this has been a major blow for both of them. One of the problems we have in my wife's family is they have several strong advocates for low-fat. The main pushers are extremely low fat and eat different meals or very selective meals when we are together. Bth are very lean although it has come at a cost of limiting fat to 10 grams/day.
I'll go by Chapters on the way home and grab Good Calories, Bad Calories.

Randy... perhaps if you had ordered the book alone, you would be finished with it by the time the more obscure cd arrives. ;-)
Max... great quote from Rush. I try to step out of my journey regularly to see where the he!! I am... and hope I'm not too far afield. Sometimes I'm right on track. Other times I can't even see the field. That's why PP is such a great program. It's really a way of life with a form of reflection and analysis built in.
Hawk... surrender to the bike! I dread my work out a lot of the time, too. I've found it's wasted energy. Then why do I do it? Same as you, I guess. A habit from the old mind set maybe.
Leaving the hotel today for 2 days at my friend's house. I originally came here (Miami) for her birthday and then took a few extra days for myself. I am glad to be moving to a house with friendly faces and a kitchen and egg whites. But I'll miss my alone time. Funny how a hotel room can quickly become home.
See you all later. Have an energetic and happy day.

Morning, gang :)! It is ponderous what we've done to our bodies in the name of "eating healthy". Thankfully we've all come across a much better way to live (and eat) :D!

Ocean: I think Hawk does the bike to prevent the RSD from taking hold in her good leg.
Randy: If I had limited myself to 10% fat for a long time, and then learned that it's a big fat lie, I think I'd be pretty pissed off. One of the things they note in the stuff about insulin and cholesterol, the researchers found that low calories or low carbs tended to explain the gap between a country like Japan and the US. I think you can reduce food intake to a certain point and get the good cholesterol profile and the lack of metabolic syndrome, but the low carb seems like an easier way to go.

Max, your not going to believe this but it is just 10 grams/day!!! They have been doing this about 6 months.
Breakfast is Kashi Cereal with a bit of extra bran in Skim milk with a bit of Carnation fat free condensed milk.
At the common meals this summer even the salads had to be served plain (without oil or vinegar) and added after serving. They took part in the BBQ meal as a "special day" but monitored that no oil was added.:confused::eek:

Hello! I'm on a short leash again today. Food is fine. Music party tonight. I'm going to stop at the meat market on the way home and shore up my larder. Dinner will be wings and veggies and I'll take the rest of the wings to the party to put on the snack table. Sometimes there are meatballs and/or cheese and sausage, but the ladies tend to do baked goods.
"Calories" is the next book I'm going to get.
no for today... I don't even want to say...
I have this headache. I needed to go get dog food and protien and go to Staples for more office organization stuff.. It's 82* here.....The vanilla milkshake just lured me to the drive thru and leaped into my car window and then forced me to drink it. :evil:That's my story and I'm sticking to it.:paranoid:

Hawk ... save those carb loads for greater things like Thanksgiving or Christmas.http://www.lastoutpost.com/images/ROTFLM.gif
Sorry Hawk. But you got me thinking now of a cool, thick shake and I can't get rid of it. The water just doesn't compare.
On track and had a great game at lunch. Only 4 of us showed so it was two on two in full court so there was a lot of movement and and tight sets. Both games went into extra points to break the tie.
Today is a full window IF day with dinner being a beef/shrimp curried stir fry with zukes, onions and peppers.
I had yogurt with cranberries and a bit of cream.
Fitday Total: 1283
Fat: 68
Carbs: 56 - 18 = 34 ECC
Fiber: 18
Protein: 120
A little aside. Today I went to make a connection for a new network drop in a dark basement of a building I support. It has a very low entrance that is poorly lit and there have been a few accidents there in the last three months as the building is finishing of renovations for new clients.
I ducked under the warning tape where the last guy hit his head but came back up to hit the next one quite solid which put me flat on the ground in insulation fiber and debris. Just venting 'cause I don't usually lose it but some of the rough ones came out this afternoon. I went back up the client (a police science researcher) and he got me to report the incident and I included a request for more lighting and a general cleanup. The previous guy was down for the count a full 10 minutes and a night time security guard also hit it hard.

Lynn - Tomorrow is another day :). And it's not like you slip all that often - so just forgive yourself and move on . Unfortunately, you will have the headache for a while to remind you of your indiscretion :(.
Randy - No way could I live eating like that ! Been there, done that, and it never lasted long :D.
Today is a resounding yes :).

I'm reading GCBC right now too. It's really interesting stuff buy definitely not a light read. It makes me mad too that the dangerous low-fat mantra is still spouted as the healthy way to eat. Then, people who try to do it just get too hungry cause they're starving for fat, and probably binge on more low-fat carbage and the cycle goes on.
I've had a really good week this week. No slip ups at all, and still down 2 1/2 lbs. Now for the weekend....

Good Day. This officially has not been a PP month for me so far. I when to Homestead Hollow (http://Homesteadhollow.com) I was doing great today. Went to the gym and WORKED OUT! yay! Met my mother-in-law and went to Homestead Hollow. Everything was fried or covered in sugar, so I did the most damage. I ordered a deep fried moon pie. I could only eat 2 bits but i'm sure my Carbs are way OUT! The good thing. i only ate 2 bits. I had a sit down with myself just a few minutes ago... i have had 3 days over my carbs just a little but a little stops me from having good health.....
Here is to a great weekend!
ooooowwwwwwcccccchhhhhhh Randy!! I would hav said some words too... They just happen at times like that.

Hi, ya'll,
Posting late because I had no time yesterday!
Today was my Birthday, so, I was on plan everywhere but I had a 1/4th of my favorite birthday treat, fried ice cream, large scoop, hubby ate the rest.
Max, youngish doc or not, they all don't get it, read the research or are they taught it in school.
The American Diebetic Association has lost their mind and are trying to get on the more carbs/less fat bandwagon. The Certified Diabetic Educator RN's at our hospital are preaching the same line.
I see it everyday at work in our clinic, where the docs send patients with wounds to us for follow-up to achieve healing. Diabectics out of control as they are eating "like the diabetic educator" says, blood sugars too high to heal wounds asthey become chronic.
When I suggest even lowering starches/sugars, they look at me like I am speaking a foreign language, especially, when I suggest they need to add more protein (most don't eat anywhere near enough), to heal.
It is very frustrating, but I continue trying to educate. We have a new group of residents/interns each month. So, hopefully, some will remember what an old speciality nurse tried to teach them.

Happy Birthday, Claudette! :) I had it written down and was going to remember, but work got in the way yesterday. :(
I agree totally with what you are saying here. I get diabetic instruction invitations from the local hospital and I just shake my head. I never go to the ADA website any more. God bless my alternative treatment friendly doctor! I may not be a shining example all the time, but I'm a darned sight better off than I would have been had I not read Eades and Bernstein.
Randy, I'm sure you have a sore head and I hope the lump goes down quickly. Maybe you could tape some gauze around your head and mumble something about lawsuits! We have a safety committee in our school that goes to great lengths to save us from harm. Right now they're working on whether it's better to lock classroom doors to prevent terrorists or leave them unlocked, per fire marshall orders.
Hawk, I hope your headache's better by now.
I'll take a yes for Friday. I had sausage, cheese and a deviled egg at the party. The cookie and bread bakers weren't in attendance! :D The fudge people were, but that's harder to rationalize.
