A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone.

Easy for him to say. He chucked it all to go live in Emerson's back yard. Oh, and truck back into town for beer and conversation every weekend. Still, you gotta love old HDT.

I once read that Steven Spielberg doesn't wear a watch. I read this at a time when I had a watch, a pager, a cell phone, two email accounts, a notebook organizer, and more, and was maybe the most disorganized I had ever been. And clearly, I wasn't as rich as Steven Spielberg. Or even Senor Spielbergo, his Mexican equivalent. I'm not there yet. I still have a watch. And a notebook. And a fancier cell phone. But, when I'm really on top of it, the important things run themselves. Or I allow them to run themselves. I don't think HDT was talking about automatic bill pay, but then again, he never had a student loan payment. But the real power comes from letting things run themselves, hopefully on our principles.

Good morning--

There's something about Thoreau--even though I disagree vehemently with some parts of his philosophy, occasionally these nuggets of truth shine through, such as the true nature of wealth.

Today is on track--the usual (shake and sausage for breakfast, one bottle of water done, and lunch packed--a FlatOut wrap with salami and provolone.

Busy day ahead--the normal routine of classes with the added benefit of parent-teacher meetings tonight. My goal is to go home after school, eat some supper, and chill out a bit before coming back for meetings.

Happy Tuesday to all!

intervals on bike.20 minutes ..

breakfast...coffee..2 eggs..bacon..after breakfast I started having a headache.

lunch ...whey w/ glutamine and water

snack..whey w/glutamine and water

dinner ...whey w/ glutamine and water

I am allergic to metal and it is allergic to me. The acid in my skin leaches into and eats out the works of even a stainless water proof watch. I'm afraid to have an expensive watch. I ruined the last gold watch . So.. I have some really cool clocks all over the house and I carry a cell phone with the time on it.

Writers don't have to punch a clock. They can just sit around and think and type or travel to do research. The days I don't work at the doc office and just work on art and sewing , I pay no attention to the time.If I have to be somewhere, I set an alarm clock or the time just goes by. If I had your job Max, I would have a watch hanging around my neck.. You catch trains, you have meetings,You have time slots in your life where you HAVE to be there. I bet you had scheduled times even when you were on vacation.

Good morning :).

Lynn - I have one watch I've been able to wear since high school. Every other watch, no matter how expensive, has died a quick death . Soemthing to do with the amount of electricity in my skin. Go figure!

Max - Ponderous thought! Since I am one the the last holdouts on needing all the modern technology (like cell phones, ipods, m-3 players, etc), I am hopefully a much richer person for it . I know I've survived all these years without them, so what's a few more ?

Ruth - Hope you can get some downtime before your evening begins!

Hi, people! Being a gadgeteer, I think I show remarkable restraint by just having a cell phone and a pda--and a watch. I used to have the whole Franklin Planner deal, but carrying it on my person everywhere annoyed my right shoulder. Benjamin Franklin would approve, too. He advocated carrying a little black book, emphasis on little. He must be spinning in his grave at what Franklin-Covey has done with his idea.

(((Hawk!)))

Today's my last whole day before vacation and I'm a tornado of efficiency today. Too much to get it all done, but I'm prioritizing. Luckily, the boss is in lots of meetings today. I'll be gone before he has a chance to check on all the projects! :p Glad I did most of the packing on Sunday. Tonight is my last chance to bake trail cookies to use for breakfasts. They're so much better than hunter sausage and beef jerky in the morning when everybody is chowing down on carbs.

I've been forgetting to post my yesses on the board, but I've been a yes every day. The food's good, my biggest threat is exercise.

Good Morning!

I am so off plan. I am willing to admit I am not getting on plan until later this week. I am having blood work done to make sure I am not diabetic. Interesting isn't it? Not willing to stay on plan - the plan healthy for potential diabetics?

I have been pondering my self talk for the past 3 days. What is it that drives the intake of sugar?

When I was writing, the clock was more important to me. Free form work for me needs structure. Clock limits time with things other than writing. The writing just goes and goes. It's the distractions that need structure.

If you want to go to Italy and see the art, you need reservations. The Borghese Gallery (Rome), the Academia (Florence), the Uffizi (Florence) and the Last Supper are varyingly difficult to impossible to see without. The Last Supper, especially. 3 months in advance to get a 15 minute viewing. We were two days late for the first date we could book, and we were lucky to get the last two for the entire time were were in Milan. Of course, there's much else to do, but to go 5K miles and not see:

with my wife, the art major, wasn't really on the menu.

When we go to the Netherlands Antilles next year, no schedule that doesn't need to be scheduled. And the only clock I'm taking will be the Ipod.

Hmm...I write all day long, and whether I need to do research or not, the clock rules my day. Forget the meetings I have--if I don't allocate X amount of time to every project (I rarely have the luxury of working on one project at a time), then none of them would progress, much less get done.

There's a clock on my phone, my cell phone, my PDA, and above my desk. There's a clock in nearly every room in my house, including the bathroom. Pop up reminders and audible alarms move me from one project to another. I take weekends off the clock and audible alarms, but even then, I set an alarm reminder to remind me to eat, take meds, stop working (or stop playing around with other things.) And the dogs are always there to 'remind' me to keep to their schedules.

I haven't worn a watch for a couple months, but it's because the battery died in my last one and I just decided to do without (it was really hot and the watch was just annoying) and I never really decided to wear it again. But prior to that, I wore a watch 24/7--I was a medic, I was a tech, I was always needing to time things. Now I just use the timer function on my PDA, and if there's an emergency, I either self-count my CPR beats or ask a bystander for a watch.

BTW, Hawk, they make sports watches with ABS plastic cases, and silicone cases. Try one of them. We use them in corrosive environments, and they last for quite awhile.

I am having a no day for food, YES for exercise.

I've got to sit and figure out WHY I'm a no today. I'm out of kilter at home restless and but productive. Out of kilter at work, extra restless, super productive...

something is driving me - I'm thinking I'm stressed or worried about something, but I've suppressed it so well I don't know what it is? and I'm being productive, 'cos I'm thinking if I keep doing things, eventually I'll get to whatever it is?

I never read Thoreau, but I used to follow his policy occasionally (and still do, but less often). I'd do without my pocketbook (slightly smaller than a tote bag) or w/o a totebag or w/o anything except a bottle of aspirins(prior to PP I had a lifelong headache and usually major dental problems), a single pen (this was a major prodction, only one pen), a clean tissue.

Now, it's a cell phone, my house keys, and a clean tissue (semi-permanent nasal drip). I keep an "emergency" $20 tucked in my cell phone case.

The reverse - my norm - has me winning the "Let's Make A Deal" prize for the most obscure things in my bag:paranoid:

Carol - I'm keeping my eye on you  ;)!!!Yes, oh Whipper-snapper! :D I had a reasonable (that means "short") walk today and I plan to do my stretches tonight. My food was on plan today.

Tomorrow we start out for Minnesota so my best bet will be some laps around the motel parking lot. If I can--I will.
