My dh was told his bad cholesterol was too high ,and was put on a statin drug.My question is,how much cholesterol should he have a day ? For instance, pimento cheese has 15 mg which is 5% of DV . Does that mean 300 mg daily is what the average person eats ?The doc said give up egg yolks, steak, cheese, and butter.
Oatmeal and whole wheat bread, skim milk for breakfast and fish or lean meat, brown rice for dinner. lots of fruits
what would be a good lunch?
Is 100-200 mg a good number to aim for?

How high was his cholesterol? What are his ratios?
Please read Dr. Mike Eades blog on statins. These are very dangerous drugs.
Put your dh on a low carb diet and he will reduce his LDL and triglycerides naturally.

Pel:
~5% of a person's serum cholesterol comes from dietary cholesterol sources. 95% comes from liver function.
Eggs, cheeses, steak, etc, are the 5%.
If your husband is 5% over where his doc wants him to be, then diet is the solution. If 5% is going to be a drop in the bucket of his problem, then he should probably explore liver function improvements, which would include exercise (like resistance training and intervals) and a diet that works on optimizing liver function (IE Protein Power).
It would be helpful to know what his numbers were to see:
1- If indeed he has a problem.
2- If a statin is a solution.
3- If traditional dietary intervention (cut egg, steak, cheese, add oatmeal) is an appropriate solution.
4- If he's a real candidate for LC living and exercise.

If I were you, I'd read "The Great Cholesterol Con" by Malcolm Kendrick.
buy here (http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&search-type=ss&index=books&field-author=Dr.%20Malcolm%20Kendrick&page=1)
There is quite a 'movement' going on to 'expose' medicine for foisting this on us. Dr. Eades mentions it all the time.
I'd recommend a low carb diet. There are other things he could do, including some supplements.
It would help if you would post his blood lipid numbers.
P.S. The cholesterol you eat barely impacts your blood lipid level. But you educating yourself as to why it really doesn't matter much anyway is a good thing.

Good. It will remove unnecessary fear. OTOH, it might make you mad that the powers that be are a bunch of arrogant jerks costing society a zillion billion dollars. For nothing.
Plus, there was a major announcement in the past two or three days about a huge drug study showing the evils of a statin. Check Dr. Eades's recent blogs.

if you decide you want to bring down his cholesterol numbers - the heartscan blog (http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/) (and track you plaque) has good information.
