I just got this email from the Nutrition and Metabolism Society:

New York, NY- January 25, 2008- Dr. Mary C. Vernon of Lawrence Kansas and Dr. Richard Bernstein of Westchester County New York, two outstanding doctors in the field of diabetes have both been selected to be among the five finalists in this year's Diabetes Educator of the Year program, held by the American Diabetes Wholesale Team.

Why is this such big news?
The new nutritional guidelines released by the ADA in January of 2008 have for the first time recognized the value of low carbohydrate diets. Dr.'s Bernstein and Vernon two, of the 5 nominees, have for many years recognized the importance of a carbohydrate restricted diet in the effective treatment of diabetes. The possibility of governing agencies and the medical community endorsing the benefits of a carbohydrate restricted diet as an effective treatment for diabetes as well as other diseases, tell us that the Metabolism Society is having a favorable impact on global health.

For many years studies executed by the Society's research scientists and medical doctors have proven that high carbohydrate intakeis the most salient feature of the epidemic of obesity and diabetes and, restricting carbohydrates can improve disease risk and outcome.

The nomination of two proponents of carb restriction has created a great opportunity for the Metabolism Society.

I voted for Vernon. But it's a tough field, since Bernstein is in there too.

Dvdmon, thanks for that article link !! I sent it to my prediabetic son who had bought into the "take metaformin" mindset of today's docs.

When he was here on vacation we had several discussions about what role an lc diet can play on cases like his. He had several episodes of going too low, eating candy to alleviate that, then taking meds and on and on. I really was worried.

Fortunately, he knew about PP as he is the one who brought me to it. ( A few years back.) And when he got home he thought it over and decided to go back to PP and lose weight and since then he has had great bs readings and is feeling much better w/o the crashes he was experiencing.
I am so relieved !! Anyway, this article just sounded so much like what the docs recommended to him at the first sign that he was prediabetic that I had to make sure he got to read it too. Thanks so much.

Funny (or NOT funny) Karole.
My mother is pre-diabetic...and last weekend she was telling me how "MY" diet put her in the hospital...I said "with what" cause you'd think I'd KNOW what "MY" diet caused...??

She said she had a gall bladder attack.....but that maybe that was because when they'd go out (which they do OFTEN) she'd get breaded chix strips as her meal...

:peeved:

My response is, "that is not MY diet"...

Isn't it amazing what people sometimes think our "diet" consists of? Your mom isn't the only one out there that has a conception that is totally off base. I wish folks could understand that we do eat fruits, veggies and meat. I bet I actually eat more fruit and veggies than I did before. When I was high carbing it wasn't fruits and veggies I ate , it was crackers, pie, cake, ice cream, candy . (All that stuff that is really good for us.):D

I get tickled in a way, when I go out to eat dinner with friends-- I have everything they do, except the potatoes , and instead I have cottage cheese. But they think I am doing myself in because I am low carbing. Like that potato is adding lots of good nutrients to my diet.

It's nice to see both Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Vernon in the final 5. It really is hard to make a choice. I hope the fact that we have two low carb doctors on the list doesn't water down the votes for either.
