I just got this email from the Nutrition and Metabolism Society:
New York, NY- January 25, 2008- Dr. Mary C. Vernon of Lawrence Kansas and Dr. Richard Bernstein of Westchester County New York, two outstanding doctors in the field of diabetes have both been selected to be among the five finalists in this year's Diabetes Educator of the Year program, held by the American Diabetes Wholesale Team.
Why is this such big news?
The new nutritional guidelines released by the ADA in January of 2008 have for the first time recognized the value of low carbohydrate diets. Dr.'s Bernstein and Vernon two, of the 5 nominees, have for many years recognized the importance of a carbohydrate restricted diet in the effective treatment of diabetes. The possibility of governing agencies and the medical community endorsing the benefits of a carbohydrate restricted diet as an effective treatment for diabetes as well as other diseases, tell us that the Metabolism Society is having a favorable impact on global health.
For many years studies executed by the Society's research scientists and medical doctors have proven that high carbohydrate intakeis the most salient feature of the epidemic of obesity and diabetes and, restricting carbohydrates can improve disease risk and outcome.
The nomination of two proponents of carb restriction has created a great opportunity for the Metabolism Society.
