I fell off the pp wagon a few years ago, recently went to a new doctor and found out my glucose readings were high 268 ad AC1 of 9.6. I jumped back on the wagon with a vengenace about 10 days ago and have been taking my own readings with my new meter for the last week. My average morning reading is 209 and doesn't seem to be going down.

Is this due to insulin resistance? How long before I should expect to see some downward progress?

Rick, without seeing your actual charts and factoring in some other physical characteristics and sypmtoms, it's hard to say it's 'insulin resistance' -- but it does sound likely. As for 'how long' before you can see 'some results,' since we don't know your average morning reading before you decided to go back to PP, that's also hard to evaluate.

You could have been at 268 and in 10 days gone down to regular morning readings of 209 (if so, fantastic!)

And frankly, in 10 days there could also have been little or no change. The amount of improvement is going to depend on the diligence with which you follow PP, and just how much damage your body has suffered. It very well could take some time; PP is good but it's not an instant fix. It could take several months, and you might need some level of medication until it's fully reversed.

Welcome in.

Rick, I recently started back on the PP diet because of high BG levels, I was on medication that did help control it but I struggled with weight loss and going too low in my BG. I decided to go back to pp and I no longer take my medication and ever so slowly my 14 day and 30 averages are lowering. Having a BG monitor is a big help and gives me peace of mind that I am indeed winning.

Rick, I don't think ten days is going to clear up what took months to create. You've had a nice initial response, though! There's a very interesting and easy to read site called bloodsugar101.com that is just brimming with information.

Thanks for the encouraging words and info. I was at the doctor today to have some stitches taken out and she asked how things were going with the meter. Right away she was suggesting medication. I really want to avoid meds if possible. I told her I don't think we've given it enough time so she has me coming back in 4 weeks. I'm starting to feel like an ATM machine.

Thanks again! I will definitely be hanging out here.

Rick, I was on meds (Actos) when I started PP and on a 3-month A1c schedule. After the first test, we cut my dose in half and after the second one, I was off completely. I think my average was 5.3 and the doctor was delighted.

A couple of years later my bs count went up to 6.2-ish with a stressful lifestyle change. I resisted for a while, but started up the low dose again because the possible damage from higher bs levels trumped my ego.

Rick,
It's important to get your blood glucose under control. Metformin is a pretty safe drug that will lower your blood glucose. Stay on the low carb diet, and get some long walks in.
