In the Scary Headlines department, we have:

Seven or more eggs a week linked to death risk (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24028358/)

(Note that the title at the site is in bold red letters.)

The first two paragraphs state:

Middle-aged men who ate seven or more eggs a week had a higher risk of earlier death, U.S. researchers reported on Wednesday.

Men with diabetes who ate any eggs at all raised their risk of death during a 20-year period studied, according to the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Hmmmm...

Then they go on to cite their stats.

Curiously, they save this little tidbit of information for the very last paragraph (they would've put it in a smaller font if they could, I bet):

Men who ate the most eggs also were older, fatter, ate more vegetables but less breakfast cereal, and were more likely to drink alcohol, smoke and less likely to exercise — all factors that can affect the risk of heart attack and death.

Sooooooo...is it the eggs or their lifestyles that increased their risk of death?

This stuff makes me nuts.

I say WHAT-EVAH!!!

I eat NO LESS than 14 eggs per week...NO LESS...and I'm fit as a fiddle...
Course maybe that's because I'm a WOMAN. It does say MIDDLE-AGED MEN

Crazy....silly....

So, lemme get it straight:
Egg eating correlated with: Smoking, Drinking, vegetable eating and early death for 40-50 something men (or whatever middle aged means).

Egg eating negatively correlated with: exercise and breakfast cereal consumption.

Obviously, the usual caveats for epidemiological and population studies apply, but we know, pretty sure that:
1- Smoking is correlated with early death
2- Excessive drinking is correlated with early death.

We suspect:
1- Vegetable consumption is positively correlated with longer life

I dunno. If you're eating a sad standard american diet, perhaps egg eating is associated with "I Don't Give a F**k" lifestyle (smoking, heavy drinking, etc). Which is generally correlated with early death in men. So, why not. But clearly, if you reduce carbs, up becomes down to some extent.

So, as long as you eat less than 7 eggs/week it's OK to smoke, drink, cuss and while you're at it throw in sloth, gluttony, envy, and the remaining cardinal sins, right?

So 6 eggs = party, and 7 eggs = wake. Sounds like a plan.

;)

Oh, and if you're diabetic you should never eat eggs.

Amy, I'm with you; I eat at least 14 eggs per week. (I love eggs!) Hubby has been doing almost the same. He was the one who pointed out the story to me, and it shook him a little. He's a 40-something (middle aged) man who's lost weight and is feeling great eating low carb, and along comes an article like this. I know he didn't read it all the way to the bottom, because I had to point that paragraph out to him. Most people don't read the entire article when "news" like this is released. And if it shows up on TV it's a headline plus 8 seconds. No wonder people are confused about nutrition.
