Everybody can add veggies in quite easily. How do you work in your fruits. Berries are easy. Melons are tasty. I have some black grapes I munch on once in a while. I know that they are slightly higher in carbs, but, does their properties allow them to be more acceptable (in a carby way) just like drinking a glass of wine is suppose to be healthy?! I know it's harder to take off the pounds when eating the grapes. Maybe 8-10 a day would be comparable to eating a piece of dark chocolate for the benefits it has.

Just wanted some thoughts.;)

Sharon, this is where its good to look up the items of interest you'd like to have and find out exactly what a 'serving' costs in carbs.

Fitday is a terrific place do find that out. Then write it down and post it in your kitchen. That way you can have them if you KNOW!

I don't know if you get the full benefit of resveratrol (the stuff that makes red wine a health food, aside from the alcohol and other stuff that's good about wine in general) from just eating grapes. I know you do get it from either red wine or dark grape juice. Not sure about the whole fruit.

That said, the sugar in fruit is metabolized differently from refined sugar. This is not license to eat fruit ad lib. But, it is license to have some grapes and not worry that they put you five grams over your count.

I do grapes from time to time.

ALL RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! :D I saw on about.com that they were middle of the road in carbs - but, I have read that the black and red ones do you the best as far as the same benefits of wine. It's the green ones that are full of almost nothing! I am so tempted to have a grapefruit or at least half a grapefruit or some watermelon. But, that is a very scary thought at this stage of the game.

I used to have grapefruit halves all the time. Last year, in the winter. It's weird to think of citrus as a seasonal winter type food, but this is today's world. The winter citrus is the best. I digress.

2007, Winter, Max ate about 3-4 grapefruit halves a week. It was a good time for weight loss. I had them with HB eggs, cottage cheese and ham or sausage to round out the protein.

Last thing, with the grapefruit, you might take a look at any prescription meds you might be taking. Grapefruit can enhance (in a not good way) the effects of a number of classes of drugs. (Is it more amazing the amount of stuff that we know or the amount of stuff that we don't... I'm frequently amazed by both... )

Complete side note here: DW & I (lesser extent) are addicted to "How It's Made" on the Discovery/Science Channels. Last night, they were making iron pipes. They had to be flexible, so they add magnesium to the iron. How do we know this? Who first figured it out? Accident or directed inquiry? How awesome is it that we know it? And how do we know magnesium is the ideal thing to add, and not platinum or something?
At any rate, big ass iron-magnesium pipes were one of the coolest things they've ever made on How It's Made.

DH & I watch that show all the time. It is so interesting. I think I have to watch either BP meds or thyroid. I forget which? But, I think you have to wait 4 hours from eating. That rules out BF.

Dirty Jobs, Mythbusters, sometimes when not too corny. I watched Mike Rowe with the dairy cows the other day. That was so cool!

I know that grapefruit inhibits uptake of the BP meds. My endo said to watch eating grapefruit anytime I am taking meds. I use GSE as a naturbiotic, so I have to watch that too.

I love grapefruit though.

Don't be afraid of food. Look it up, measure it properly and enjoy it. Fruits are wonderful. Some fruits the amount you would eat for 7-10g ECC makes it a great tradeoff, others the amount you would have to eat hardly seems worth the effort.

I have berries nearly every morning in my shake. Sometimes I have them again at the end of the day with some yogurt or cottage cheese.

A few slices of asian pear with a little cheese and a few almonds makes for a delicious evening snack.

I went through a 1/3 grapefruit at lunch every day for a week phase awhile back. When cherries came in I had cherries morning noon & night for a week. 10 ECC at a time.

There is a place I get some Mexican take out food from and they always put an orange slice with the garnishes. Spectacularly sweet and delicious - just the one slice. One orange, sliced, split between two (or three) meals would be a wonderful treat.

Watermelon - not the bargain you'd think given all the water. Cantelope or honeydew does a little better. But if you want some - why not get some of the pre-cut cubes instead of an entire melon. After a couple of days you'll be done with it and you'll never have enough for a splurge.

And anyway, in the grand scheme, if you splurge on an entire slice of watermelon - it isn't like having donuts.

One of my favorite lunch places has a yummy salad with romaine, really good blue cheese dressing, a handful of pecans and a sprinkling of sliced black grapes. The contrast of the grapes & the blue cheese is just wonderful! Just a thought.

When you are that many cherries what happened to your weight loss or weren't you concerned about it at the time? What did you do about the other carbs throughout the day? I am scared to do more than the 1/2 cup or berries I do in the morning now!

I ate about 8-10 cherries per meal. Other than that I had plain shakes, meat & nuts & I think salads, broccoli. But I still kept to 7-10 g ECC/meal, under 40 per day. That's what I mean. I fit them into the plan.

It was a cherry fest week. :D

I put in 1 oz. at fitday and it came up with 3 grams of carb. So, that would easily be worked in to the pp plan. Would you say that is about what you had?

I used: 1 cherry is about 1 ECC - so I'd have 7 or 8. or 10 sometimes.

according to nutritiondata.com 1 cherry is about 8g so 28g/oz would be 3-4 cherries for 3 or so ECC.
Sounds right to me.

What LisaS said.
If fruit consumption concerns you, look it up and only eat what fits into your meals. But keep in mind that fruit, eaten seasonally, can begin to taste like candy after months of reduced carbs. You can easily overindulge, so just learn what works. Grapefruit works. Lemons, oranges work. Watermelon and other melons work. It wouldn't be summer without a peach now and then, nor would it be fall without the occasional half an apple. And remember, some things we typically consider 'vegetables' (like tomatoes, pumpkins, zucchini, spaghetti squash) are actually fruits...and we eat them, in PP appropriate quantities. Other fruits can be treated the same way. Know what you can eat, and enjoy!

Grapes were on sale this week, so I picked some up for our dinner party last night...
they're gone...
they were SO sweet and tasty, and JUST PERFECT! Sometimes when fruit is on sale, it's because it's not the right time or it's not good (they do this with apples...they put them on sale and they had frozen so the inside is MUSHY and the outside is very hard and sometimes still green).

But these....PERFECT!! Mmmmmmmm

I guess there could be worse things?!?!:rolleyes::D I ate the rest of all my grapes yesterday. But, I bought the bunches 2 weeks in a row. Not big bunches. And I made them last about a week each time. So, it was spread out quite far.

Hey i think apples are one of the best fruits out there. They are real low in GI and very satisfying.

as I said - look up the fruit, figure out what measure fits in PP (7-10g ECC) and eat away.

BTW - 1 med apple = way over per serving goals for PP. 1/3 of a medium apple - fits a meal/serving.

and PP does not take GI high or low into account - and GI probably has little value compared to glycemic load - and even then on PP it isn't the important part.

Red Terror, I like apples and bananas, but there is no way to eat a whole one and keep the carb count under 10ecc. I can do a half a small apple or 1/3 of a small banana. Sometimes it's not worth the trouble. When DH has an apple with lunch, he shares a couple of slices with me and that's enough for a taste.

Red Terror,

Do you have a carb counter or use something online like Fitday? The questions you ask can generally be answered by looking the item up. If it's under 10 ECC's, it's yes (as long as you're not over 40 for the day). If it's over 10 ECC's, it's no (or cut the portion).

If it's resveratrol that your wanting, peanuts, especially boiled peanuts, are a better source than grapes. Then you just have to worry about the lectins.:suspicious:

Not if you're an "A" blood type...like me. :D Peanuts are a supper beneficial..as a matter of fact, I read in whole health healing that peanuts are great for hearing..they improve hearing..I hear REALLY well..I love peanut butter.

What did you say????? Just kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!:D I love peanuts and I have great hearing. I eat a little when I'm feeling hungry and they take away the craving or hunger pangs and last a long time. Quite a bit of nutrition for a little guy!!!!

I see that watermelon is on the way into the stores. I know that it isn't the best fruit to eat. But, I love watermelon. I wish it was a really "good" fruit. I hate the idea of limiting my consumption. I could just about live on watermelon.:D But, like everything else. If you want it, you have to make allowances somewhere else. It's like what is always said, "You have to give up something to get something." Maybe some cheese or eggs to have some watermelon.:D I just love fruit. I want to pick up a cantalope and divide that up into little bites and have a few here and there. Maybe instead of blueberries or strawberries. I can work it in with a little cottage cheese. :p

watermelon balls, Mal Lady...marinate them in some lemon juice and they'll last a couple of days in the fridge. That way, you can ration them out. I eat watermelon all the time!

Thanks for the idea Gaelen. Does the lemon juice change the flavor any? I would love to snack on a few of those balls. I just hope I could stop with "a few".:o:D
