It's Bones here. I used to be Bones2 but am just Bones now. I have settled into being a mix between hedonist/dilettante...leaning more towards dilettante. I have found that I can have as much as 100 grams of carbs a day and still lose weight if my grain consumption is in the form of sprouted or sourdough. If I remember right, my weight before was 155 lbs. I'm now 135 lbs....but, I just got a digital scale that says I'm 5 lbs. heavier than that. So, according to my new scale I'm 140 lbs. Either way, I'm down 20 lbs. since the board crashed. I would like to get to 130 lbs., but am not anxious about it. The pounds are refusing to budge the closer I get to 130 lbs. I know that this is typical so I'm just continuing to eat healthy, exercising, and letting my body settle into whatever weight it wants to at this point.
My son is possibly having seizures related to his cerebral palsy (waiting to see the doctor for a definite diagnosis) so I have to watch his diet carefully now. All my knowledge is now helping me to help my son. I'm so glad that I already know what to do...this necessary change in his diet was not a huge shock, nor difficult/overwhelming, upon learning about this.
Good to be back.

Thank you, Sherry. Yep, I'm still in the game. I know it's probably jumping the gun, but I gave up all meat for Lent (using dairy for my protein requirements) and that's when my "stall" began. I'm curious to see if my weight starts dropping now that I'm eating meat again. At first, I didn't think it would matter as long as I was getting the protein I needed...a protein is a protein...but now I'm wondering if it does make a difference. I looked online to see if I could find any info regarding this and learned that there is a difference in regards to how many calories your body uses to break down and digest meat vs. other food. So, just the fact that more calories are being used to digest meat could make a difference in weight loss. (?)
What do you all think?

Hey - welcome back, Bones :D! Glad to hear from you again :)! As for the dairy, I don't know why but have read from several that it caused them to stall... Sounds like a good question for Gabe to tackle!

Hi Carol. Thanks for the welcome back. I hope the change in his diet will help him. I know there are other "seizure diets" out there that are more strict, but I think what we are doing will be just as effective...we'll see.

Hey, Billie! How are you? If you remember, Bones was my nickname as a child because I was so thin. My sister still calls me Bones... I'm still trying to live up to my nickname, although I'm not aiming to be as thin as I was when I was a child. I'm getting closer...almost there. :)
I would like to put a weight ticker at the bottom of my post again (it's good accountability for me). Could someone remind me how to do that?

Hi Shadow. How are you?
The dairy thing...it makes you wonder if those yogurt commercials are true. Some say that yogurt does help them lose weight. I wonder what would cause another person to stall with dairy, assuming they are not allergic to it? Is there a biological reason? I have heard people say that because cow milk is intended to support the growth of a calf into a several hundred-pound cow, it's just too much for human bodies. Goat milk/diary products are supposed to be better because the size of a goat is much closer to the size of the human body. I don't know if there is any evidence to this, but it does make you wonder. I do know that fewer people tend to have problems with goat milk because the protein molecules are easier to digest.
Hi Gabe. Would you happen to know anything about this?

Bones - Well heaven knows I know nothing about biology or even science in general :p. But I will admit I am personally a bit skeptical 99% of what I read ;).
Are you certain you actually "stalled"? Was eating dairy inclusive of large amounts of high fat dairy (i.e. cheese, heavy cream, etc)? Nothing else changed in your eating other than a swap of dairy for meat? I know when I change one item in my menu, everything else seems to change to accomodate the new item. For instance, what I'd have with dairy for supper is most certainly different than what I'd have with meat. Are you sure the stress of your son's seizures didn't affect you? Did your exercise change in any way? Did the types of carbs you were eating change?
Anyway, not being nosy, just trying to find unscientific reasons why you might have stalled :).

I must admit, I wondered if it was just that getting enough protein from dairy might mean a lot of cheese, which comes with more fat calories than many kinds of meat.

Well, it was pretty much just a change from meat to dairy. Everything else stayed the same. I charted my food before doing that and during so that I could make sure that I was still getting the same amounts of proteins/carbs/fats, and still exercising as before. I just took a break from charting last week because nothing was changing and I was tired of charting with no results. As far as my son is concerned, that is resent. I had been stalled for approximately a month and a half before everything with my son happened. Last week was not a good week because of all the stress eating I did, but with that behind me I'm curious to see if the following weeks will provide some weight loss with meat in my diet again. If not, I guess my wishful thinking is off. :(

Bones - Maybe your body just needed a break? That's been known to happen especially the closer to goal you get. So it might be coincidental that the stall occurred at the same time you gave up meat. I will keep my fingers crossed that going back to meat makes a difference for you!
And in the meantime, maybe Gabe will weigh in with some science for us ;)!
