Although, I was diagnosed with diabetes a year and a half ago, went LC and even though I haven't been around here in a year ... and let the carbs creep in ... my last A1C was 5.4 (was still on some oral meds at that time, but not much).

Well, I found out almost 4 weeks ago that I'm pregnant! Considering my hubby and I have been married for almost 6 years and nothing (we adopted 3 children almost 4 yrs ago because of that), I thought I was going through menapause! Really! I did! (I'm 45, never been pregnant) Oh, and I'm 22 weeks along now (19 when I found out for sure).

After a whirlwind of dr. appointments, the most hilarious appointment was with the diatician.

She started off with "you're going to have to lower your carbs and will be eating more protein than you ever have". Ok, I thought.

Soooo, her "plan" is somewhat like yours Feelix! 30 carbs per meal/snack and 14 g of protein (6 times altogether). Like that's ever going to happen! Maybe the other way around! She kept pushing the no-fat/low-fat on top of this as well.

So, I've had to learn how to give myself insulin shots 2X's a day (before dinner and bedtime). I'm eating as low carb as I can (like you feelix, proteins aren't going down too well still, except steak! :D This little girl is going to pop out asking "where's the beef!"

I'm probably eating about 50-60 carbs a day (mostly veggies and dairy or some relatively LC snack bars), and have lost 14 pounds since being pregnant (I didn't know I was for most of those).

The endo-whatever doc did give me the go ahead on choosing LC over low fat though! WOW!

He also said that as I get farther along, that my BS will go up ... like after dinner ... and they have. Even when I eat on plan. Sometimes I feel like I'm failing this baby.:frown:

I don't want a HUGE baby (scares me to even think about a "normal" size baby having to be pushed out), so I have to keep those BS's down. The OB wants fasting to be below 90 (mine have been in the 90's) and 2 hrs after meals to be below 120. Breakfast is great, lunch is usually good and dinner is around 130 (and has gone up the last few days).

The docs want me to eat 3 dairy a day, but cheese has never been my fav and is even more awful now! I normally love cottage cheese, but even that tastes bad. Milk and some yogurts are the only things that taste good, and those are loaded with carbs (there's a LC yogurt at one of the food stores, but it's really hard to get down). Any suggestions?

Oh, and if I don't eat some carbs, I don't care how much meat and veggies I eat, I'm hungry really quick (sometimes I'm full, but still hungry? It doesn't make ANY sense).

What a roller coaster ride! And we just found out today that the amnio came back normal (we'll love this child no matter how it comes out, but we wanted to know so we could be prepared).

Congratulations! My best friend, since we met at the age of nine, came from a family like yours. Her parents adopted three children, then, in her mid-forties, her mother found she was pregnant (the adopted ones were 2, 4 and 6, so the extra one just fitted the pattern). The mother also thought it was the menopause. I think she was quite a few months along when she found that wasn't it.

Thanks for letting us know the good news - both yours, and that the nurse is advocating controlling your carbs. I hope you'll keep us posted :).

Congratulations, Jingles.
Milk and some yogurts are the only things that taste good, and those are loaded with carbs (there's a LC yogurt at one of the food stores, but it's really hard to get down). Any suggestions?

Yep--stick, as much as possible, to plain unsweetened whole milk yogurt (the fewest amount of carbs.) You can add to it some fruit, some ground up nuts or seeds, a little liquid sugar free sweetener--but that way, YOU control the carbs. And there are a lot worse carbs you can be eating than the ones in yogurt. For that matter, regular whole milk is only 12g carbs per 8 oz. Again--there are worse carbs you could be taking in.

Plain unsweetened kefir is usually higher protein and lower in carbs than yogurt (Lifeway low fat plain is 14g protein and only 8g carbs per cup). And again, you can add fruit to it and/or sweeten to taste. Like yogurt, it's a tangy, tart taste--but it's more liquid, so it lends itself to great smoothies.

You could also lower your carbs (if you wanted to and can tolerate soy) by using SoySlender (splenda sweetened and vanilla, cappucino, or chocolate flavored) or plain unsweetened soymilk in place of milk.

Take care of yourself, and you'll take care of the baby too.

Great suggestions Gaelen. I'll look for those items and give them a try.

Thanks Gaelen, Mitra and Missy. It's been a long year since I've been around here (hubby quit his job - gone back now, we've moved into an 80 yr old house with it's own quirks and needed repairs). Hopefully I've been somewhat successful in "training" my children (now 10, 12 and 13) to take up some of the house work and give mom a break.

Actually, my kids do a pretty good job, as long as you stay on top of them! My oldest smoked the whole kitchen last week when he didn't notice a pot holder landed on the burner while he was draining a pot! Good thing I wasn't too far away. Hopefully he won't make that same mistake in the near future.
