Article is 4 years old, so no carry over gymnasts. And it confuses low carb, high protein with anorexia and bulimia. But, if I had to pick an olympian's body to have, I will take a male gymnasts over nearly anyone.

If that's not what a MAN should look like, I dunno what is.

Good body to choose.
I was laughing at the McD's commercials. Told DH that I bet those guys (swimmers, gymnist, etc) didn't get there eating McD's. He said, "Not all olympians are atheletes of that caliber. They don't have to diet like that. Ex. Air pistol"
I was perusing the article and saw Christy Henrich, so I looked her up...she died at 47lbs!!!
Very sad...
Sorry not to detract from the article, which was fantastic...and you're right...he does have one of those "perfect" bodies!

I like the swimmers and wrestlers too. All the male bodies except distance runners actually.
But I wouldn't look to elite athletes as a model of eating. Usually they are performance-first in values, not long-term health.

I dunno if anyone has seen anything on Michael Phelps' diet. He is a carb monster. But then he swims five miles a day. And he's 22.

It's always been amazing to me how some people can get away with carb stacking. Take body builders for instance, when they are growing and building muscle the load up on carbs -- but again they are in the gym 5-6 hours a day. I remember in wrestling in Jr. High, before a match we'd starve ourselves to make weight -- then right before the match, we would load up on CARBS just for energy.
Even as much as I think I workout every day, I have to still really watch the carb count. I start creeping up to more then 50eccs I don't lose -- I might even start gaining more fat. Pretty crazy.

I'm thinking you're not 22 either, Dean. I know I'm not.
In terms of body work: I think the gymnasts have the best bodies going (men), followed by sprinters. Women, it's hard to say. Probably divers. Not gymnasts. There is no way that homunculi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homunculus) are appealing.
Think on this though: The gymnasts do anaerobic exercise in short bouts. Bodyweight, but intense. Short though. The longest deal is the floor exercise and that's a minute at most. Sprinters. I dunno what they do exercise wise, but in terms of their actual event, you are talking 10 seconds to 1 minute of going HARD. This is intervals. For that matter, swim races at 100 M and under are also intervals. Dara Torres. I like a woman with a little more curve than that, though. But diving is also brief flurries of activity with a relaxed piece between. So is soccer, football, and baseball. And really, most basketball is as well (execute the offense, jog back on D, execute the D, walk the ball up). I know certain people here do not believe in the universal utility of intervals, but, I think there is clearly wide utility for most people to do things fast-slow-fast-slow.
Speaking of sprinters...did any of you see the 100 meter dash (http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/INF/AT/C73A/ATM001910.shtml#ATM001910)! It was UN-BELIEVABLE!! And was BURIED in the news thanks to Phelps...
Don't get me wrong...I think Phelps deserves some glory...but so does this Usain Bolt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usain_Bolt)!!

The Jamaican who comments on track for NBC was annoyed by him as well.
I'll have to ask my two Jamaican acquaintances from my program. It seems like too much work.
Flaunting it would be one thing. Pulling up with 15% of the race left is show boating.

Our gymnasts had some pretty good bodies. They were sticks. I told my husband that one of them had huge boobs. I just knew they were going to give her black eyes. Shawn is just stocky as everything.
I heard that Phelps eats 12,000 calories per day, but he burns 6000 in one training session.

Nastia Liukin, the tall one, is 5'3". Shawn Johnson is a head smaller. That makes her a homunculus, no matter how stacked her butt is. I'm sure she's almost all muscle, and they look kind of normal all stacked with one another, but when you put them in the real world... they are not sexy (at least to me). But then, homunculi just don't do it for me.
Phelps eats that of almost straight carbs.

homunculi can be sexy. Not my first preference, but I bet Shawn Johnson will be even sexier once she is in her twenties and fills out to her womanly potential. I can wait!

Man, you're making me tax the www.dictionary.com (http://www.dictionary.com) website. I'm pretty sure that 5'3'' isn't considered a dwarf by any means ... but the constant training and lack of body fat would cause a growth stunt. Once she's no longer training 12 hours/day ... she'll grow up!
Now the Chinese girls on the other hand ... don't stand a chance.

Liukin is 18. I don't think she's got a growth spurt left. Johnson, at 16, maybe. Of course, they're both talking about sticking in for London. If that happens, they will compete with some new 16 going on 12 Chinese girls (and maybe some Russians as well) at the gymnastic ancient ages of 22 and 20. Not much height gain for women post 20.
A fun thing about walking around Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore. We were a group of 18 Americans. Most of us over 6, the shortest of us 5'8", maybe one of the girls was only 5'6". Very easy to see over the crowd at 6'2".I suspect China, other than the odd pituitary case (Yao Ming, Yi Jianlian and Sun Ming Ming), is much the same.

Interesting, Max. Yesterday, the Today show interviewed Nadia Comaneci, who was 14 in 1976 when she surprised the world with her 'perfect 10.' She's now a healthy, good looking and fit 47 years old--substantially taller and with more body fat than when she was a 14 y.o. gymnastic superstar. From one of the International Olympic Committee-provided bios: "In the 1976 and 1980 Games she won a total of nine Olympic medals. Following the 1980 Games, natural physical development began to inhibit her performance and after a victory at the 1981 World Student Games she retired." She would have been 18 in 1980, 19 in 1981. Apparently it is possible to 'grow' a bit, even after 18 or 19 and a dozen years spent as a gymnast in training and intense competition, as soon as the intense competition training/eating regimen stops.
By natural development, the Chinese women gymnasts come from shorter, slighter stock--the average height of Chinese and Japanese women at age 18-22 varies from 5'0" in some parts of China to a high of 5"2.6" in Japan--none of them would be likely to hit 5'6" at adulthood even without the rigors of being gymnasts.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height#Average_adult_height_around_the_world
But just because these women average smaller heights than, say, somebody from the US or Europe, doesn't make them dwarfs. It does mean that they're not going to tack on 6-8 inches when they stop training, though.

if you want to see something interesting, esp. if you remember the '72 or '76 games, go watch video of Comaneci or Korbitt on the balance beam or uneven bars compared to the length and complexity of the routines today. Just stunning.

That is what I was trying to say ... I just don't have the eloquence ..... my "welsh" anscenstry must have forgotten to pass that gene down to me.
Like I was saying ... they were interview Mary Lou and she's quiet the looker ... must be 40ish ... (didn't take the time to look at her bio).

You were doin' fine, Dean...and maybe there's a Welsh poet in there, yet. ;)
It's just that all these comments about height and post-competition growth and changes made me want to go look it up (gotta do something in the doc's waiting room, y'know.) Anyway, although that chart doesn't list all nationalities/ethnicities, Czech women average around 5'6", and I figured for Comaneci, around that height today, that was close enough for government work. Also, I think it's interesting that the Asian gymnasts may not grow much after their competition years...but at their ethnicities' respective average heights for women, they probably wouldn't be much taller, even without competition.
Retton IS quite a looker, and per her bio, she's got three kids and just turned 40 this year. I saw her in a TV commercial awhile ago--pretty amazing.
BTW, at an even 5ft, zero inches, I'm a good four and a half inches shorter than the average for American women. FWIW, at least five boyfriends/significant others have been 6ft. or more. Something about tall guys attracted to petite women...or maybe it was one of my other magically attractive qualities. :slywink:
And LisaS is right...google some of those 70s era gymnasts; a lot of their old routines are available online. Amazing the differences between then and now.

Uhm...
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0720574/bio
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_tall_is_Mary_Lou_Retton&src=ansTT
This titan of beauty and normal development is 4'9", and maybe a half. That makes her short for Asia, much less West Virginia, where she's from.
Same sources have Nadia at 5'4", same height as my wife.
But post gymnastics development isn't even the point. Perhaps homunculus is inflammatory. To think of them as fully formed people in their competitive prime, is really to deceive one's self. The more women's gymnastics I watch, in the modern format, the more I wonder if it's a net positive or a net negative. High degree of difficulty, but major deductions for its arbitrary nature, its byzantine scoring, etc, etc, etc.
PS- I have it on the authority of no lesser scholar in little girls that Bela Karolyi himself that these Chinese girls are not 15, going on 16, regardless of what their state issued passports and asian development curves may suggest. I will take Bela's word on what a little girl should look like. Who has been around more than him? (and that's a little scary in a John Stossel kind of way).

Dean...I work in a very tough group. The ability to tease and take being teased, to dish as good as you're dished, is maybe the most valuable skill anyone can bring to their job--and without it, my workplace and workgroup can be a very miserable place to be.
And when I moved into IT support from the hands-on pre-clin testing group, no relief in sight--just a different level of teasing, in more languages! ;)

So, the latest news in the land of the homunculi:
The IOC and the FIG have asked for further proof of the girl's ages. Some american computer security expert has some proof that He's birthdate was in 1994 as recently as 2006.
China's response, predictably, was "You're going to trust some conspiracy theorist over the government of China?"
The proper way to handle this is to work the case now, then fix it after the games close. Let's just say I wouldn't want to be an FIG official on the streets of Beijing if you wind up stripping the Chinese team of their medals.
I wouldn't want to be the gymnist if stripped of the medal...from what I read, they could be blamed somehow and end up making shoes for the rest of their lives.
I don't mean that as horrible as it sounds, but those ARE the "stories" we are hearing.

I've never heard the advice to not tug on Wonder Woman's cape. Probably because she doesn't wear one very often.

I'd probably recommend that you don't snap her bra, though.
Well I can tell you this...you better not grab her behind!!!

apparently fashions in hot pants and tiaras come and go, but D-cups are always in.
Additional thoughts: Does WW wear high heel boots as a handicap, because she's just too good to compete with bad guys in sneakers or combat boots? It can't be for the sway and shaping of the legs. Because the two who wear boots have the same shapely legs as the many in heels.
Lastly: The more practical the WW outfit, the less comics get sold, I think. Thus, how long before a bare midriff WW with a g-string panty, and velvet CFM boots? Maybe fishnet stockings.

Hrm.
Hulk versus Superman.
I think Supes wins. He seems to be (before being toned down to be at least somewhat mortal) as strong and as invincible as the hulk. But he can fly. And shoot lasers. And blow ice.
As to ass grabbing, Hulk or Supes could do whatever they wanted to Wonder Woman and she'd have to take it.
She's a bondage girl with her golden lasso.
Yes, she is, but she is a Sadist, not a Masochist.
I think Superman would win as well...I'm not sure the Hulk has too much between his ears...
He's all braun, no brain...
Of course some of us LIKE it that way...
:D
OH, hey...did anyone else see the MSNBC special on "strong women"?? I've been trying to find it but I cant' find it anywhere!!

Uhm, not.
Maybe I'm not suited to be a lesbian trapped in a man's body.
