I read in Dr Bernsteins' book on diabetes about the powdered sucralose and its' carb content. I use it regularly and didn't give it a thought. Then today I received some sucralose mini tablets I ordered and decided to check the glucose mg % on my glucometer. I dissolved one packet of sucralose powder and the reading on the glucometer was HI, too high to read. I have another meter and that read 546Mg!!. I then dissolved an equal amount of tablet form sucralose in equal amounts of water. 27Mg!! I then did the dipstick Diastix and the powdered sucralose came out as 2000Mg/dl. The tablets read NORMAL. So I'm getting rid of the powdered sucralose and will be using the tablets instead. As a former diabetic I need to get it right. The sugar content in powdered sucralose is way too high for us low carbers. But the packaging doesn't warn you. What a day!

Yeah, those hidden carbs really sneak up, don't they? I haven't found the tablets, but Dr. B. does recommend them. I use Sweetzfreeze or DaVinci unflavoured syrup. I did find some Splenda Quick Packs on sale at Big Lots -- they are 8 grams carb for a cup equivilent, so not too bad when using in recipes.

I just received polish author Jan Kwasniewki's book, OPTIMAL NUTRITION. He doesn't believe in sweeteners at all. Totally low carb but a very high fat lower protein outlook. He actually claims to cure certain diseases at his clinic using his diet. I also got HOMO OPTIMUS. Interesting reading as it contrasts other views. Only he bases his observations on personal experience and anecdotal evidence. Lots of testimonials. I like the fact that he doesn't stress weight loss as much as metabolic balance. He feels weight loss will come as a part of an overall return to health and vitality. Also, he feels that this optimal nutrition will improve the intellect and thought processes. Well, that's one way to get people to low carb!

A little late- maybe you know this- but there is a liquid Splenda (I've only found it online) that has no carbs. My very strict Dr. allows me to use it. The powdered kind or pills use "dextrose" as a medium to carry the minute amount of sucralose.

Actually, I have found 2 at Netrition.com. One is Fiberfit with is sucralose with fiber in a liqiud form and the other they carry is EZ-Sweet which is a tiny little 0.5 oz bottle which is pure sucralose. 2-3 drops in your drink is sweet. Both are good products.
Splenda is also packaged with corn fiber as the bulking agent. I did the meter thing too and this form of Splenda reads too low to read on my meter.

I am very confused. So which one is the best to use? What about pop with splenda in it?

I know this thread is a little old but I wanted to answer the last poster's question. The powdered splenda is the avoidable type because it has maltodextrin. The liquid version truly has zero carbs. My understanding is that pop with splenda is okay because it's made with the liquid version. These have never made my blood sugar rise.

Here are comparative blood glucose and insulin responses for sucralose and sugar, based on a study of 7 healthy women.
