Change and growth take place when a person has risked himself and dares to become involved with experimenting with his own life.
Herbert Otto
One of our common catch phrases around here is, "Your program, your science experiment". Some of us leap in and try everything at once and others of us take baby steps. However you do it, you will succeed if you keep trying out new ideas, different directions. No book can give you any more than the basic tools and a starting point. We're here to exchange ideas and we find out what works for one person might not have the same effect on another.
I'm lovin' the diversity we have here! No two people are alike and we don't have to wear uniforms! :D
My breakfast will probably be coffee with cream, as in a couple of hours I'm going to be at a funeral luncheon. I'll eat the ubiquitous deli meat and cheese, plus whatever vegetable they serve. Dinner is still uncertain, but I have a lovely pork loin roast in the freezer.
The party last night was fun, but the food was not. I can't complain, as I didn't bring a snack (no time) but it was all sweets with one little plate of cut-up beef sticks. My soup held me well, though, and I had two cups of tea. When I'm playing music, food is not even in my consciousness. ;)
What's going on with you this weekend? How about NEANing? :paranoid:

Good morning Carol!
We are NEANing here for sure! After our trip to Colorado we have done alot of thinking and talking about the program. Gabe was reading Mike's blog and he thought it almost seemed like it could have said, "Dear Gabe..." thanks for the tip Mitra!
Not sure what breakfast will be, probably eggs of some kind and not sure of lunch yet, but dinner is going to be chicken with fresh dill.
On Sunday we are going to cook a filet mignon roast which should give us some great eating for a few days. Big sale at the grocery store, had to succumb!
I am off Monday for the MLK Holiday and have given my staff Tuesday off as well to soak in every second of the Inauguration, but on both days will be working at the "home office", ala the dining room table!
The weather in the western suburbs has leveled off a bit, a heat wave to 20.
Will check in through out the weekend, hope everyone has an incredibly great weekend!
I have been working 12hr days and now this morning I am frantically packing to go ice fishing until Monday.
We have thought through meals, so that is a relief (sure wish I knew what I was wearing!!)
1/2 our meals will be at restaurants, and lately those have been going well. Restaurant meals will either be omelets or burgers sans bun.
Otherwise we've packed smoked turkey, my lc bread, pickles, carrots/celery, apples, and mixed nuts.
Not enought to sit around and snack in case nothing is biting, but enough that I will feel satisfied!
Have a great weekend everyone, and depending on what time we get back, I'll check in Monday night.

Hello Carol, Billie, Amy :).
I agree, Carol, that the diversity of ways people implement the program is lovely. It was always one of the things I liked about PP: that it gave you guidelines, but doesn't say you have to eat any particular food, or that you can't eat any particular food. I tried a new stall at the farmer's market this morning - lots of sausages, rillettes, duck confit etc. I bought some smoked sausages and smoked pig's liver. I also bought pork belly so that I can make some rillettes, because they're so useful to have in the cupboard. (It's sort of like potted pork - only real meat :).)
Billie, I hope that working at home for a couple of days means you'll be able to pop in sometimes - it's so good to have you and Gabe with us again .
Amy, have a good trip. Don't get too cold!

Amy - that sounds like a fun trip!
Breakfast today is chili or at least my version of chili. My weight loss is standing at 5lbs and I will take it. it's been just a week and I hope next week is just as good. I rededicated my love to sauteed spinach, bacon bits and a little parm cheese. So tasty!

Hey all,
I've been absent because as some of you may remember from my journal, I got the Atkins book and was contemplating switching to that. So I was busy reading that while still doing PP. I did end up making the switch and am starting my 6th day of induction. It seems to be working a bit better for me. Since Jan. 1 I've lost 5.2 lbs., 3.8 of that from Atkins. Having been PP'ing  (although with slippage) for awhile, I wasn't sure if I'd see a greater loss or not. Still ended up having the tiredness/headachiness :jawDrop:, but that has passed.
Just in the short time I've been here I've seen people join and disappear right away and I didn't want to be one of them! Whether I come back to PP or not, I did want to at least pop back in and thank you all for your help, advice, and encouragement.
May we all win this Battle of the Bulge no matter which plan we do  !
Hugs to all!

Amy - that sounds like fun, but COLD.
We're still in the single digits here and I can't contemplate being outside for an extended length of time.
I have been craving a sleep-in and I sure got it.
Slept for 11 hours and woke up a few minutes ago.
dh just made me some eggs, so I'll try to check in later.

Hello everyone... checking in , bfst was leftover corned beef and cabbage, lunch will be either leftover chicken alfredo, but more likely tilapia and steamed veggies since I'm trying to avoid the possible issues with wheat and carbs in the dreamfields. Dinner will be hot wings... (btw, scale was up a lb this am.. but hubby says that I'm looking thinner, so I'm hoping this is muscle replacing fat...)

To my mind, Atkins is not incompatible with PP. Just different approaches to finding what carbs you tolerate, and an emphasis on protein here.
If you like the board, I would encourage you to stay. There are a lot of people (like me) here who have had success with Atkins and have a lot of experience. Most of my experience online is with Atkins, actually. And really, strict low carb is strict low carb. The recipes are the same, though a lot of PP stuff is more appropriate for the OWL phase than Induction.

Here it is 6: 30 and I already have dinner ready even though hubby arrives around 7:30. He's out feeding out barnyard anims - still have lots of rabbits.
I made a really good cauliflower cassarole: doubts tons though. Decided to use 8 eggs, 4 oz of soft cheese, 2 oz of parmeggiano and 1 lovely cauli which I zapped till al dente. All into the oven with a bit of salt and lots of pepper. It's out now and smells wonderful. The question is, with all those ingredients, how do I know how much is one portion of protein? I certainly can't eat half of the thing, it's huge.
Just ate my snack - 2 oz of philly with 2 slices of smoked salmon all mashed together in which I put some chives. Divided it into 4 little portions and put each portion into half a fennel leaf. Wow was it good.
Tonight I'm going to splurge on a little apple after my cassarole. It is still kind of hard for me to figure out how to eat fruit and not up my carb situation during meals.
Today's results are great 106 protein, 30 carb and still can't figure out how to calculate fats...slowly but surely it's coming along
Ice fishing is really neat. What kind of fish do you usually catch?
Hope you all don't mind all my questions...what does NEAN mean? Must get the vocab for your discussions under my belt. Also what is the dh that you women talk about? I assume that it has something to do with the men in your lives.
Tried the Revol-oopsies and they were good. Tomorrow am going to bake more but I've decided to add a tbsp of almond meal for each egg white so that they remain a bit more consistent. They were really much too sticky.
Am off to read some other stuff in here. It is a goldmine.
Have a wonderful weekend...

.
What I do when I make a new recipe is put all the ingredients in fitday (usually under a separate day, either a couple days ahead or behind the actual calender day, then look at the summary for the "day". This would be the totals for the whole casserole of course.. Then you can look at the total protein and divide it into the necessary portions.

We are NEANing here for sure!
Hey, Billie! I think that blog is one of the most instructive since the books were written.
Gabe, I thought for sure I read "Dear Carol," on that first line...
Billie, how does it feel to look forward to NOT commuting for two days?
I have been working 12hr days and now this morning I am frantically packing to go ice fishing until Monday.
We have thought through meals, so that is a relief (sure wish I knew what I was wearing!!)Have fun, Amy. My idea of fun is somewhat different, I must say! Great menu.

I'd rather spend my carbs on fruit or veggies. I do love hot wings! And, yes, there seems to be a disconnect between body shape and weight loss.
And really, strict low carb is strict low carb. What's in a name, anyway?
Well, I was wrong about the funeral lunch! :jawDrop: It was ham buns, potato salad, jello and cake. I had coffee. I wasn't about to waste a roll for an ounce of deli ham. I came home and had warmed up roast beef.
The rest of the day will be good old house cleaning. It's snowing like a Christmas card outside, adding to what we already had. There's easily a foot or more on the deck railing. Very pretty.

NEAN is the acronym for Not Even A Nibble. It's so easy to start overeating with "just a taste" that we are often better off not having that first bite. The decision is made ahead of time, when there are no temptations around, and it gets us through the trials that come up.
We use shortcuts to save typing. DH stands for Dear Husband, DW for Dear Wife, DBIL for Dear Brother-In-Law, and so on. Sometimes it is difficult to interpret. IMHO means In My Humble Opinion. FWIW is For What It's Worth. There are hundreds of them. Feel free to ask. ;)

Popping in just for a bit. Busy day around here today with just housework and stuff. I acutally managed to sleep in (for me anyways). Seems like on the weekends I wake up (on my own) earlier than I do during the week and can't get back to sleep. Today I slept til nearly 9:00 and felt well rested when I woke up.
Thus far today I've had a cup of tea (with cream and Splenda), 3 hard boiled eggs (salt and pepper) and 3 slices of bacon; Lunch was a can of Progresso soup to which we added a whole can of the Swanson chicken breast - shared with hubby so ended up with about 28 Protein and 10 Carbs each. He even had water to drink! So I'm on track for today :)
Dinner is supposed to be burgers (sans bun), salad and steamed baby carrots. I expect I'll have some tuna between now and then though.
I too enjoyed Dr. Mike's latest blog. Printed it out to have handy. This is at least my 4th attempt to seriously try (though in essence I try all the time, just don't succeed very well). What amazes me is that the jeans I bought when I dropped so much weight in the Fall of '06 (when I was so active before) STILL fit, even though I've regained all that and then some. Makes no sense to me at all.
Off to do more housework and roast some almonds so I'll have some "crunch" with my tuna later.

Hi all, Well I am totally enjoying today except I have a headache that would stop a bus. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the 30 degree difference in temperature today. Yesterday we woke up to -35C and today we woke up to -2c AMAZING!!!!
Morning was our dance rehearsal for the big event tonight! We are celebrating Ukrainain New Year's!!! the children are performing for a social evening and so am I with the adult group. I am actually very nervous.
Food today will be: Breakfast was a saskatoon berry shake, lunch was a large vegie and cheese omelette and dinner will be at the social evening I will stick to the meat being served and salad. i am sure I will be too nervous to eat.
I am also going to snack on some nuts right now.
Have a great weekend.

Today was really good. Flashback: last night was good, too! I did not stay on the straight and narrow--everyone else was having dessert and well.. I succumbed to the chocolatey goodness. I stepped on the scale today and was .5 lbs heavier, which, whether or not it is the case, I attribute to the fudge brownie sundae. So be it. I managed to go out to dinner tonight and just have fish and veggies, no brownie sundae. I am still hungry. I have not been journaling on fitday lately, which I think I should be doing. Here is what I ate today:
Breakfast: 2 morningstar grillers, coffee w/cream and sweet n low
Lunch: 3 meatballs with a little tomato sauce and cheese
Snack: peanuts
Dinner: flounder in a cream sauce
I also forgot to take my supplements today blegh. I ran 75 minutes on the dreadmill with an average 10.2 min miles.
Oh yeah, and I asked my bf if I looked any leaner (because, like any guy, he won't say anything) and he said that my butt definitely got smaller! YAY!

So ended up having the leftover alfredo, only had one forkfull of the dreamfields, there was enough chicken and turkey bacon to make me happy. Then dinner was 1 fillet of tilapia with some snowpea stirfry that I picked through, so hardly ate any of that. Then we went to IHOP after church with some friends.. so I had a side salad and a burger patty (which you can convieniently order just by itself!) topped with ranch, pretty tasty!
I know eating out can get boring or annoying, but I just ask the waitress if she can help me out, and usually they have some pretty good ideas.
So here's the final count, surprised that the carbs were so low... I guess my effort to avoid them at all costs is paying off. Maybe the woosh fariy will visit <<smile>>.

Hi all,
Another day of NEAN for me. Darn that banana cake, it still isn't gone. But I have resisted. Dr. Mike's recent blog post was more confirmation to me that I need to stick to the basic plan for now if I want to keep seeing results. Got to sleep in this morning for a rare treat. Hubby got up with the children, fed them breakfast and even washed up last night's dishes. What a gem, he is.
Breakfast was slices of cold roast beef. Lunch was a turkey-feta wrap on flatout lite. Dinner was stirfry made with leftover pork from last night and some bokchoy and other low-carb veggies. Also had a glass of red wine.
I actually got some exercise in today in the form of raking leaves in the backyard for a few hours. I know I'm going to feel it tomorrow.
Totals: 87g protein, 28g ECC, 92g fat, 1475 cal
Will check in again tomorrow. Night all!

Hi all,
I haven't been around in a while (late summer/early fall?), but I'm back. Glad to see some familiar "faces." I ended up feeling pretty crappy with the whole carb flu thing, started a carb free-for-all and . . .. So my new plan is to start with 20-25g carbs at each meal at the hedonist level (minus gluten). I'm hoping that gives me an easier transition, and then I can work my way down to the recommended level.
Breakfast will be bacon and eggs with a glass of milk. Dinner will mostly likely be a roast chicken (or two) so I have leftovers. I probably won't post every day but will check in here a few times a week.
Oh, and I'm using SparkPeople to track carbs/protein and my workouts. I started back up with my strength training a few weeks ago, so I have a bit of a head start there.
(If my ticker shows up, it's mostly likely wrong -- haven't fixed it yet.)

I have not been journaling on fitday lately, which I think I should be doing.
Congrats on the butt.
Personally, I find journaling on fitday to be a chore, until I get into the flow of it. Then, I magically rediscover the utility of it and it becomes very easy. Even if I skip a day or a day and a half, I find it pretty easy to recall everything I've eaten, because I'm in the journaling mindset. Additionally, I find that when I journal, I don't have to bother NEANing, as I'm a lot more aware of what it's going to look like in Fitday.
While I'm here, here's Saturday's counts:
Protein: ~90 (low... only two meals, no steak)
Carbs: ~35 (dreamfields, some grapes and 1/2 a slice of wheat toast with brunch)

Hmmm what is this dreamfields everyone is speaking of? I have really been staying away from anything carb-like because I am terrified that a downhill spiral will ensue. I broke down and bought a loaf of LC bread (4g per slice) because I needed something for when I work at Stratton and am hiking all day.
Anyhow, gitfid too, wrt: my butt, I never even thought of it as being annoying to ask him that because I am not the type of girl who is like, "I'M FAT!" all the time. However, I can see now how my bf might have gotten nervous about this question! I don't think he was lying because he pointed to specific areas. And that's all I'm going to say about that.
Today has been really good. I sent off more applications for sponsorship--the girls on the local LUNA Chix team asked me to apply and I felt really touched by that, I'm so glad they thought of me! I would still love it if the Eades' would sponsor me, even if it's just for a discount on their stuff, it would still be cool to say I'm sponsored by Protein Power. I sent them an email, but still have not heard anything back.
LUNA Chix is the female half of Cliff Bar, Inc. They support a lot of worthy causes, such as breast cancer awareness and research. I did not tell them on their application that I am low carb, but I was honest--I love those stinkin lemon bars. YUM. I don't have to eat the bars/drink mixes, I just have to distribute them. Oh well. I think they have sugar free rehydration mixes, although I have a ton from my previous sponsor. I am still waiting to hear from some other sponsors, too, which I think is a good sign--I already got a lot of rejection letters, so that means that I might be waitlisted. I'm sure I'll get accepted by LUNA now and they have really pretty jerseys :)
Ok I think I'm taking up enough of the bandwidth here! I'm just so thrilled that I ate salad instead of pizza today and it was yummy and I feel great. YAY!

Carol it is wonderful to be home. The snow bounded me last week so I will be home for a whole week. Not that I am not working, spent the day on the computer, and have one grant left to knock out by Tuesday evening.
Had a good day as well Becca, glad to see you are in the books for the night.
Had a very late and very large protein rich, two eggs, two pieces of canadian bacon, two sausage, one piece of LC bread and cheese breakfast.
Dinner was left over chicken with dill sauce and later on sugarless jello with some pecans and raspberries. I will do the tenderloin tomorrow.
We made reservations today for the end of March, when Gabe is on spring break to go to a B & B. My personal goals are to lose 10 lbs by then and begin a strict regiment at the gym. Not overwhelming goals at all, very doable, so will be asking for your help to keep me on track.

Hi everyone,
Carol the performance was great. I know I flubbed up some of my steps, but the response from the audience was great. My sister who is very blunt, said we did awesome so I am happy with that. We still have a few months before we take our show on the road !!! We have entered our group into two competitions this spring, I am excited about it and can't wait to be many pounds lighter by then.
The day was awesome we had -2C weather!!!!! Yippeee, I took the kidlets skiing this afternoon and then this evening we went sledding for a bit. Lots of exercise and fresh air.
Here's how the food turned out.
Breakfast: coffee shake
lunch: can of salmon and 1/2 cup cottage cheese
Dinner: 2 weiners (we roasted hotdogs at our sledding hill), 4 pieces of cauliflower, 1/2 cheese and 1 slice of white onion
With all the exercise I got today I may have some nuts for a night snack or I may just have tea!! Awesome day, I feel so good!

Hi, Max and Sam. :)

Jackie, you sound really pumped! Marvelous!
The boys and I got invited to a homemade Italian spaghetti dinner tonight. It's kind of like an audience with the Queen, and she's darned good at it. I found out this morning so I simply didn't have any carbs all day long and took a teeny bit of pasta and three meatballs with sauce. There was also a great salad with oil and vinegar. I haven't even looked up the carb count because it didn't spike my blood sugar.

Lisa, all those calories and only 29 ecc, very good!
Well I have been doing well, I began on the 14th at 274, and this morning I am 265. I remember last time I lost alot right at the first but after that it was hard going. I have been working on keeping my thoughts where they should be, like in the grocery store. I bought fresh strawberries, in January! i never would have done that before, i would have just said in my mind, I cant afford strawberries. But the things i passed UP I added up in my calculator brain, not buying that, 2.00, not buying that, 3.00, etc etc. so I could afford the strawberries after all. lol. and what a treat they are.
It helped that I made meals ahead of time as Amy said she does in one of her posts. last time I tried this WOE I had a hard time because I was never prepared. I would go to the fridge hungry and not find anything ready to eat. this time I am prepared, and planning ahead. I am also exercising on my Tony Little sprint master thingy, I think that is making a big difference. i have stared at it for a year now and hardly got on the thing. now I am using it daily. eating properly is a good incentive to exercise. and oh yea, each time I have had those temptation thoughts, like last night I wanted a pepsi, I told myself how many spoonsfuls of sugar in a can of pop, like about 12 or so they say, do I want to put that in my body? NO! I am winning the war this week by keeping control of my thoughts. It helps also that i cleared my apt of all carby foods.

so here's the tally: Cals are a bit high, but I did some wii games, still sore! And the ribeye was TOTALLY worth it, thus the HUGE amount of protien today! Lisa, I think the great thing about this woe is that we can do very well without cutting calories drastically, especially in the beginning. Good job on the wii!
We'll see how the scale answers for it tomorrow. Water drank, supps taken. Nice relaxing day today.
Sara Jane, you might not see any scale action just because of a few extra carbs on one day. If you do, just drink more water and dine on protein and it will disappear.
... last time I tried this WOE I had a hard time because I was never prepared. I would go to the fridge hungry and not find anything ready to eat. this time I am prepared, and planning ahead. Lucille, preparation can make the difference! Replacing the junk food with real food is a great leap forward and so is the exercise. It all adds up to success.

Had a breakfast out and ate a slice of a frittata, which was wonderful. Hard to count. Very hard to count. Here is my best approximation, liberal quantities on the stuff I didn't know about... was not close on carbs, no matter how liberally I put it all in:
Protein: ~155
Carbs: ~10
Total Cal: ~1725
Weight stable this morning at yesterday's low.
I might be more sensitive to sugar alcohols than I was previously. 2 SF peppermint patties did it to me yesterday. Not horribly, but it's never fun to be sugar alcohol'd. I guess this is what happens when you eat a lot of real food and take time off from the ersatz replacements.
