THE MOTHER'S HEART IS THE CHILD'S SCHOOLROOM.........
Henry Ward Beecher

And I'm sure you're all saying but what does this have to do with PP? LOTS! We all learned to eat at our mother's table and though she taught us to eat our vegetables and our fruits, to eat EVERYTHING on our plate. You'd be surprised how many bad eating habits we picked up beause of all the love and attention she gave to our diets.

My home was a haven of wonderful baked goods. To this day I am an excellent pastry chef who finds great satisfaction in baking bread:(, decorating cakes:eek: but, unfortunately, who knows that they are really not so good for you. They are, as it were, my heredity. Grew up in a Jewish kitchen full of latkes and challah:) in which my grandmother would render chicken fat and make us gribbenes:D(two items which fit into PP) but who would also cook us kreplach and all sorts of high carb dishes which were part of our russian heritage. To this day I can still smell the odour of challah in the oven...and when my DSLaw makes hers it takes me a lot of strength to not eat half (and her loaf is a 2pounder). So as you can see my mother's, grandmother's hearts were my culinary classroom......

Today I am what I ate then but with the advantage of PP. All the good things which I know how to cook now are getting a particular treatmet - the LC treatment. The hard part was giving up the heredity of the past and making LC my lifestyle which I will pass on to...

whoever wants to listen, including my physician.

So when San Valentine's Day wakes up in your end of the world
Remember that the best gift for your LC partner, family, world around you

IS all the LOVE, ATTENTION CARING and JOY you can give them

Just checking in to see if someone is awake yet. Seems that you all are sleeping in. Festivities last night everyone?

Mornin Puddin! I'm up. My first day of vacation and I can't sleep...
That's alright though...I haven't had any time at home for over a week, so this morning I have been cleaning the cat boxes, washing dishes, wiping the stove...you know cleaning up so that when we get home, the place is clean. I HATE leaving a dirty house!

Reasons I couldn't sleep?
GF was snoring...not loudly but she was snuggling and kept doing it in my ear. I would roll her over, but she just kept coming back, which is sweet, but....
Work on the brain. UGH...
And finally...I was hungry. I was super hungry.

So I gave up and here I am. I bought a digital Trivial Pursuit game and want to get it installed so we can play on the plane and in the car. I think it will be fun to have since I'm going with a group that is VERY smart and has a great memory for trivial things. *I* am terrible at such games, but I'm a good moderator!

Glad someone is awake this morning. It gets awful lonely out in hyperspace waiting for the alarms to ring on the other continent. Game sound really neat. Do you install in the computer.

GF snoring in your ear. I definitely would prefer that than the creature who snores in mine - my beagle and she also snuggles but it is less endearing I can ensure you;)

Weather here is really cold:rolleyes: but we've got a lot of sunshine.

Great job on the house! I also like to leave things in order when I leave. Who's cat sitting? Guess you got Mom and Dad doing those things. It is wonderful to have people who can help.

Have a great vacation! :D

Ammy

No, the trivia pursuit is a hand held, but you download more questions from the laptop...I thought I could also play on laptop, but guess not. Handheld will be easier and can be handed off to others when I want my laptop...that's good.
Neighbors are housesitting. they have pets, we have pets, we're always doing pet care for eachother.
Parents are in another state...I wish they were closer (most of the time:redface:).
I'm sitting here drinking coffee and just finished my scones. It was a particularly yummy batch. I ran out of almond flour, so I used 1/2 almond, 1/2 hazelnut. The hazelnut has less carbs, so I think I might do that again (I think it does...).
I packed two batches of the dry ingredients so I can make them when we get to Whistler.

I'm so excited to be on vacation...It has been so rough at work (and home). I needed a vacation more than I ever have before!!

Are you all done with your nets? I knw your work is never done in the grove...maybe you're pruning now?? It all sounds like a lot of fun. Granted, it sounds HARD, but I sit at a desk all day and move money...your job sounds heavenly some days!!

Ammy

I'm going to go shower and finish packing...probably won't check in again until I'm in Seattle...and then only if I can. Chat later!!

Hi there, I finally made it up !! We did sleep in til 7 this morning. Most usually we're up around 6 ish.

Great, beginning post Puddin. I think we all can relate to it on most of the levels you mentioned.

My mom was into cleaning our plate because others are starving and breaded fried foods were very abundant !! My mom, bless her heart couldn't gain weight and had to resort to drinking a milkshake every single day for ??? in order to get all the way up to 98 pounds. Course that was in her mid 20's, but she never was heavy in the least.

I did okay on my protein , carbs, and fruits/veggies challenge yesterday but was very lacking in water, supps, and exercise. Drank very little water, no exercise except housework, and only a couple of supps.

I will do better today, cuz my challenge isn't all about weight , it's about health. I need to pay more attention to that.

See you later on today after I have done some exercising !!

Happy Valentines day !!!

FWIW, I don't set an alarm on weekends because I'm an alarm puppet all week. :D Unless I have to...:p I think we all have a tendency to think our mother's specialties in cooking are something we have to have to feel connected. I know I've worked to change my concept of "comfort food"!

Excellent thought, Puddin. My valentine is taking me out to breakfast where I will have a delicious omelet and maybe even a side of bacon. The chocolate will come later. Always 85%; he's got the word.

Amy, I agree with you on the clean house to come home to! If I can, I take off work a day early to pack and put things in order.

Good morning everyone. There was a great article in Mother Earth News a several months ago that basically said we need to go back to how our grandmother's cooked and ate. And it was dead-on--moderate carb, low sugar, no fast-food, etc. I'll find the link and come back to post it.

Here it is: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Natural-Health/2008-10-01/Dietary-Fat-Health-Weight.aspx

Todayl is going to be blustery cold here -- isn't expected to get above 50 with high winds -- so I'll be doing some much needed inside tasks.

Brekkie was breakfast tacos made with eggs, bacon, and LC tortillas. Lunch will be venison stew and salad, and supper my favourite cheese, apple, and wine. Dark chocolate and almonds will find their way into my tummy sometime during the day.

Have a great weekend, everyone. :)

Right, BC! Mother cooked moderately, but I didn't eat moderately. I've been a compulsive eater since day one. There was no such thing as fast food back in the fifties, but I still managed to be a chubby.

I've read the Mother Earth article, and I've seen the same concept in more than one blog. It resonates!

my mother's plate ...

I was never overweight by an ounce until I married and left the house and could buy my own food...

my mother wasn't the type to urge us to clean our plate, but she wasn't a coddler, either. She cooked (and she was NOT a good cook according to my sibs) and you ate what she cooked or you didn't eat. Period.

Lunch was a can of Campbell's soup, Mo-Th chicken noodle or chicken rice, split by my younger brother and I (and our older brother before he went to high school - he's 7 years older than me, 10 years older than younger, so younger didn't eat much when older was eating and I never ate much) , along with, at the most, one stack of saltines. Fri - lunch was a can of Campbell's tomato, made with milk, with either saltines or a piece of bread (I chose the bread).

dinner was similar. You knew what day of the week it was by what we were eating. Wednesdays were spaghetti day, and I didn't eat any dinner then, 'cos we had a box of #9 spaghetti, with one small jar of Ragu and a loaf of italian bread for 6 of us. I didn't like spaghetti or italian bread, although I'd occasionally eat a piece of raw spaghetti or two on Wednesdays.;)

One day of the week we would have Irish stew, which I adored, and I'd have 2 bowls, but with NO meat, 'cos the sight of the beef would make me want to vomit.

anyway, once I was in charge of buying my own groceries and eating whatever I wanted I ate more than I was used to and slowly started gaining weight.

off to a better day ...
headache is there, but not bad

Puddin, have you tried zucchini latkes... they don't quite meet the potato taste, but to keep one's way of eating on track.... not so bad :O)

Morning all....

I was awake, but not up, earlier as DH had to work and I couldn't sleep through his alarm. Once he left I went back to sleep. Feel out of it now as I slept much later than I'm used to even on the weekends. It's cloudy here today so I will probabably feel "blah" all day and staying on plan will be very hard for me.

Lots of "chores" to get done today, being gone last weekend makes for double work today.

Breakfast will be bacon and eggs (not sure yet if scrambled or hard boiled)

Lunch ??

Dinner is suppose to be seafood (which for my plate is salmon patties) and I'm going to give Dreamfields Mac & Cheese a try. Will be first for me (and I'm wondering again how to deal with Fitday on computing ECCs there).

Guess I should get to it. Really hard for me to get moving today.... durned clouds :(

Well, I didn't get breakfast at the restaurant, but I ate well today. Had the last piece of cauli-bake for brunch. I fixed a batch of sauerkraut and sausage, which I had for supper just now. It's been a relaxing day with bouts of chores punctuated by periods of novel reading. I needed it!

I'm going to give Dreamfields Mac & Cheese a try. Will be first for me (and I'm wondering again how to deal with Fitday on computing ECCs there).

I have probably added Dreamfields to my Fitday a half dozen times with various formulations. This is the one that I use now. It is based on one the company gave out to, I can't remember, maybe an inquiry from me, maybe from someone else or maybe on their website. Note, this is 1 oz and most servings are 2-3 ounces.

Calories- 55.0
Calories from Fat- 31.5
Fat- 3.5g
Carbohydrate- 14.5g
Dietary Fiber- 12.0g
Protein- 3.5g

This does not match the label on the box. The box claims 31g of protected carbs. You can read their website to get that taken apart and you can read their patent application to see if you understand it (I have read it and I continue to use it, for what that's worth). But, the above formulation is one that came, one way or another from the DF Foods folks.

As for me, making a pot roast for my DW for dinner. We went out to a very nice lunch, where I had a 16oz prime rib slice. Was heavenly. There are few things as good as the first bite of a well prepared prime rib with the jus. Few things.

Whoops, running short on time, have to get busy on the roast. Later.

I can't do Dreamfields -- raises my blood sugar almost as much as the real thing. I've also discovered I can't do some of KevinPA's wonderful recipes as they use resistent starch, and apparently, my body is one who doesn't resist. It's a pity because his recipes are so durn good.

Spent the day inside doing some clothes mending and making curtains for the cabin I live in -- not sure why since it's in the woods and no one is around, but I've had the fabric for several years (I've lived here 6), so just decided today's the day.

Becca, I use DietPower and when I don't want to put in specialty foods, I just find something that has a similar nutrition count and use that. I made breakfast tacos and didn't have Mission low carb tortillas in the data base so I used 1/2 a regular tortilla for each one I used. Ditto on the venison spaghetti sauce I made earlier this week -- just found one that was "close enough for government work" (sorry, MAX). It sometimes takes too long to add a recipe or food.

Ended the day fine -- 53 ECC and 96 protein. No sunshine today.

Made it to Seattle...very uneventful flight.
Then we went straight to Pikes market. It was a ZOO!!! We had to jump out of the car quickly while our driver kept going to find a place to park, and I forgot my camera!! DARN it!!
Oh well...I was there.
And I visited the very first starbucks...do you know about the boobies (http://starbucksgossip.typepad.com/_/2006/09/principal_tells.html)? I had NO idea?! (really, it's not as bad as it sounds)

anyway...I ate rice today. There was NO place to eat in the airport and we drove and drove and drove and it was seven hours between meals. I ordered bbq pork ribs at the first food place I found in Pikes Market and it came with rice. I was beyond hungry and slowly losing functionability, so I ate. Not a lot, maybe 1/2 cup, but now, 2hrs later, my intestines are making a lot of noise. We'll see how the evening goes :o. they cooked a turkey here, so I'll have that and veggies for supper Little to no carbs. Try to remedy the day.

Hi all,
i got some wonderful news from my doc yesterday and wanted to share this will all of you. I started PP in Nov 07 and so far i have lost 30 pounds. I had extensive bloodwork done and got the results yesterday. Everything is fantastic according to my doc. i was pleasantly surprised when she told me that my cholesterol was 169 it used to be 189. She did not give me specific number numbers concerning my good/bad cholersterol but she said that the ratio is perfect.
When i saw her the last time i told her that i am on PP and expected her to give me the standard.. no no. follow the food pyramid and lower your fat and calories.. BUT she did not. she said that the food plan sounds great and she suggests to keep sticking to it. So i am a happy camper now. I am not perfect on PP but i must be doing something right in order to get my cholesterol down and the weight too. I know that PP is the only WOE for me in order to keep myself healthy and sane. Thanks.

Wow, not even close to the box, except maybe the Protein. ;) Where'd all the fat come from? I can see the carb/fiber aspect getting it to work to 5 ECC/serving though. Part of me is tempted to just plug the numbers off the box and let Fitday overstate my carbs, I'll know from my pencil sheet that I'm okay. Will try yours for now though.

I can't do Dreamfields -- raises my blood sugar almost as much as the real thing. I've also discovered I can't do some of KevinPA's wonderful recipes as they use resistent starch, and apparently, my body is one who doesn't resist. It's a pity because his recipes are so durn good.

Becca, I use DietPower and when I don't want to put in specialty foods, I just find something that has a similar nutrition count and use that. Ditto on the venison spaghetti sauce I made earlier this week -- just found one that was "close enough for government work" (sorry, MAX). It sometimes takes too long to add a recipe or food.

I hope it doesn't impact me that way BC. I gotta say the mac & cheese tonight seemed too good to be true. Since I am fortunately not diabetic I don't have a glucometer to actually check my reaction. I've considered buying one in the past to do random checks but it seemed like a huge expense (for the strips anyways). Now I'm wondering if there's a way for me to know if I react badly without actually testing? Would a weight gain in the morning mean anything (ate okay today so no surprise carbs)? Or maybe when I have the leftovers later in the week if it triggers a carb attack? hmmm....

The items I use a lot of (like my La Tortilla Factory wraps) I have entered into Fitday. I've even gone so far as to enter my brand of things they have (like tuna and almonds) where my labels differ from theirs. And sometimes I just guess. As long as I'm in the ballpark...

As to my day.... actually managed to get to the grocery store on schedule this weekend! Have dinners planned for the week and should have enough leftovers for lunches. Sticking to the plan will be the hard part. Came up a bit short on the protein, mainly because I'm used to 5 "meals" per day (well 3 and 2 snacks) and slept late this morning so missed some. Actually only had 3 meals today, no snacks, and am STUFFED from dinner. I didn't expect the M&C to be so filling. At least now we know what to expect so will be that and salad next time we have it.

So my numbers:

Protein: 117
Carbs: 34
Water: 96
Supps: Yes

Anette congrats on the great bloodwork!

Amy enjoy your trip!

I dunno their specific claims. If you don't tolerate wheat well, you will probably not tolerate DF well either. It is mostly wheat. The process used to make it resistant is to blend some resistant starches and some non-starches in a colloidal suspension with the water that they use to render the pasta dough. At no point is the wheat anything other than wheat or anything other than grain. It's simply modified by having a colloidal suspension of things blended in. Their research, as put forward in their patent application, says that this addition of these materials (I could fish it out, but where'd I put the damn thing) "protects" the carbs.

When this seems unlikely to me, I remember that any sufficiently advanced techonology seems like magic to us normal folks. But, I do not gain on DF. Of course, I do not gain better on beef steak.

As for me:
Protein: 150
Carbs: ~20
Cals: Little high
Water: little light, but other fluids filled the gap.

Think of yourself as on the threshold of unparalleled success. A whole, clear, glorious life lies before you. Achieve! Achieve!

Andrew Carnegie

Well, here we are half-way through February. I thought at this point we could use a "pushy" quote to keep us going. We are always on the theshold of success -- it is up to us to determine how that is to work out in our lives.

Today's weather will be cold and blustery as was yesterday, so it's chili time again! I love Texas Red.

Brekkie: LC yogurt, strawberries; lunch: A large bowl of Texas Red, salad; Dinner same as lunch (when you have a winner, why switch?). Snacks: dark chocolate, apple, wine.

I would think both weight gain and cravings would be something to look for. Dreamfields works like a starch blocker and for most folks that is consistent with LC. My body just works a bit differently. For example, I can eat an apple (18-20 ECC) and have a 20 point BS rise 90 mins later. Dreamfields gives me a 30 point rise. Better than regular pasta, but more than I would think given their claims on the box. I hope it works well for you because it does help provide more food choices.

Need to report my doings for Valentines day. My sweetie and I went to an Elvis impersonator show at the civic center about 45 miles from here. It was a two hour show and --don't laugh guys, cuz after all Elvis was my generations big,big thing !! This guy was very good and really worked the audience well. We both really enjoyed it and afterwards went to Ruby Tuesdays for dinner. Had to wait for 30 min. to get a table but my it was worth it.

I had steak, broccoli, portabello mushrooms and salad bar. Gosh it was good. We each brought half our steak home (and most of the broccoli and some of the mushrooms. ) We have lunch all planned out !!

Protein: 121 ecc 40
fruits/veggies: grapefruit, cranberries, broccoli, portabello mushrooms, salad (romaine, spinach, grape tomatoes, mushrooms, olives.)

Okay, this is my best guess as to what I had to eat yesterday.
As assumed, the bbq sauce and rice put me over the edge, but worst of all it made me crave something sweet a night. She had a Light and Fit yogurt which is somethign I do normally eat, but I dont' normally have one of the bigger ones (I buy the 6pack).
Oh well...today is a new day.

Well I woke up feeling like I do when I've OD'd on carbs, bloated and mentally fuzzy. Scale was only up about 1/2 pound though which could be normal variance. I have 3 more servings left that I had planned on using for lunch. I guess I'll have to see how it affects me during the week.

I really am hoping we can work it into our menus once a month or so, it's a good way to get some protein into my DD1 who prefers her protein battered and deepfried in the form of chicken tenders. There's a few other things she likes (mostly chicken) and everything else she eats just a little of at dinner cuz she "has to". She actually liked the M&C.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks Max and BC for your input (from both sides of the fence :) ).

Canegie is great and so is that quote. At the midmonth point already means that the challenge is half way through even this month. Hard to believe time flies so quickly.

Sorry I put that other quote for the 15th day. It is still a little confusing for me to put the quotes. In any case, with two threads going we sure can get in a lot of extra stuff.;)

Elvis Presley, what memories! Ruby Tuesday was one of my favorite places for lunch in the States - along with TGIFriday's. I wonder if I'll be able to get to one of those when I come over. Who knows. Depends on where my Mom wants to eat. Since she is 80 I let her decide. God bless her she loves going out, walking and doing. Last year she had me take her to a fish place (great broiled fish steaks), a barbque place where I learned that buffalo wings even when they say are lightly burny are a 3alarm fire type.

Today was a super day of work. Lots of housework, lots of wood carting and now 15 minutes of typing away at the keyboard. In fact, my time is up because I have to set table....yipes, it's already 7pm here and DH should be in any minute.

Sorry you woke fuzzy. Hmm -- I ALWAYS wake up fuzzy and rarely eat Dreamfields, so what can I blame it on? :D And I'm with your daughter, except I prefer Long John Silvers battered deep fried fish instead of chicken tenders. And I can rationalize having it occasionally as one piece of fish is only 17 ECC -- well within my allowance. And the dog is just estatic at getting the fries. :)

I think you are right to test Dreamfields again. This could have been a coincidence.
