View Full Version : Movers & Shakers - March 29 - April 4

Okay, gang, here we are at the end of the month and getting ready to "march" into April. (Sorry, couldn't resist :p )....

How did your month go? Did you meet your goals? If not, what happened? What is your strategy for making sure that April is a GREAT month?

If you hit no snags in March, then I think you need to challenge yourself next month. Do something extra, lift heavier, change routines, just something to keep it interesting and the body fired up.

But if you DID hit snags in March, how about giving April your all to nail down what the problem was? We all have rough times - but that doesn't mean we have to stay there and wallow in them ;).

So.... what does everyone have planned for the last of this month and for the month to come :)?

I think that was aimed at me. I do need to get back on track, but it wont' be this week I know, at least not for exercise. Someone will be out from work so I'm doing double duty. In addition we're switching to a new POS program this week.... so flying by the seat of my pants on that as the "office" folks aren't getting much training.

Trying hard not to wallow..... will exercise mend a broken heart?

Just to say 'hello', I have nothing to report for today (spring cleaning doesn't count, or does it?), will be better tomorrow. I will think about April too:D.

Well, March has gone pretty well for me and except for those two little bouts with some type of virus I was able to get my time in.
I think it really helped as I'm pretty sure I have gotten down to my goal weight finally and at last !!:nod:
(But I'm going to wait until I see what the scale says on 1 April before I tell anyone) :D:D or make it official by changing my signature line. I never trust a one day reading on my scale--it might just surprise me the next day !

Dh and I did another 35 min. walk this evening. We were huffing and puffing just a tad so it was a good work out. I don't know if you all will believe this---- but it was uphill both ways:nod::nod:

I'm going to start increasing time on the arc trainer. Very small increments. I can do five minutes in relative comfort now. Look how long that took!

Whew!!! I didn't exercise yesterday (I usually take one weekend day off), but then some of the errands we had planned for yesterday ended up being postponed until today. But . . . . . . I DID get my upper body resistance routine done this evening!

No, it doesn't count for exercise but it IS great daily activity ;). But then again, I guess it depends on what cleaning you were doing. If you were moving all your furniture - especially up and down steps - then that would count. Routine scrubbing and all, while it feels like a lot, doesn't really do much for us physically (although it is good for our mental state).

April is almost here so you'd better get that thinking cap on ;)!

Slow and steady wins the race, Grasshopper :D! Just remember to keep it slow! It's better to only add a minute or two a month than to be sidelined for weeks on end with an injured knee ;).

Thanks for the reminder, it's so easy to get carried away, (more literally than I probably meant it)
I am planning to keep walking at least 40 min a day but increase to 6 days/week.
I am thinking about a "30 min" workout place to add strength training in a more proscribed way, but I don't know how immune I am to the subtle and not so subtle other way of eating, bad science messages.
Any thoughts?

:( No exercise tonight. I didn't feel well, so I rested for a while after work. Never got back at it. Checked my bs and found it very low, but that wasn't the whole problem. I've got four more days this week, though! Don't beat me! :paranoid:

I hope tomorrow's better! I haven't been sick all winter!

Wow, Carol , we have to face the Shadow together --I didn't do anything exercisewise today either and I felt fine.
We went to a funeral and I just didn't feel like doing much of anything afterwards. I hope you will be feeling much better soon.

Did my Tae Bo and lower body routine this afternoon. I've been feeling that the Tae Bo isn't enough of a workout the way I was doing it, so today I tried doubling up on the portions that I can do well enough, and it was a really good session!

Ah yes - that enthusiasm may last for a workout but boy you can have to pay the piper once it's done ;).

If you suffer from a lot of joint/foot problems, you may want to start your 6th day at a lesser time than the other 5. Just a suggestion :).

Sorry, Martha, but I'm not quite sure what you mean . Adding strength training to your workout is the best thing you can do for you body, IMHO. You can do all the cardio in the world but it's not going to build lean muscle mass or strengthen your bones like resistance training will.

Trying to Shake things up today so I got out my 10 Min. Solution dvd . I did a 10 min. segment on upper body and a 10 min. core session followed by 10 min. of my pt exercises and stretches for a total of 30 min. Then of course today is Tues. so I have an hour of line dancing practice this evening.

I'm definitely ready to build lean muscle and strengthen my bones.

I would like to do a trial at Curve's (they advertise a 30 min workout.) ...they market high (carb) fiber, low fat, I think, hence my concern. Maybe I need to put on my blinders and go for it, I ve never been very conventional, anyway.

Back in a different time, I tried slow burn, that was too tough for me, I couldn't focus well enough to do it or myself justice.

Walking is fun and got my 50 min, today but I'm sure I need to add strength.

I've never done Curves but if you're not used to lifting, it would be a good place to start . As for their diet philosophy, we're ignoring what the mainstream says every day, right ;). It's your mouth, your body, your food - and you should never allow anyone to dictate something you can't accept :).

Back in a different time, I tried slow burn, that was too tough for me, I couldn't focus well enough to do it or myself justice.
I would say to start out with something else (like Curves) and once you've adapted to that, then you can move on to something else like Slow Burn :).

Yes, IMHO we all need strength training :).

Okay - I know some of you will be surprised :p - but today was one of those days where I just did not want to exercise. However, I hauled my tired bootie up the stairs and got it done. I'd like to say the endorphins had kicked in until I was done and I felt euphoric but... all I felt was relieved to get it over with . Now the great news is that having gotten this one in, I only have one more left for the week to get my five in !

Just wanted to let you guys know that even after years, you can still have good/bad days when it comes to getting that M&S in ;).

(Jaw dropping to the floor.... wha ....I mean.... huh)

Just kidding-- it is nice to know someone that has been at this for a while also struggles at times. Today was a good day for me. I got on the elliptical and did my 25 min. easy. Some days my legs feel weak and I just barely get to 20 and some days I had to break it up into 10 min. segments. Don't understand the reason, but it surely happens every so often.

Then right after that dh came in and said lets go riding so we curried and brushed and saddled and rode for 2 hours. Today we got out in the woods that is about 2 miles from our house and rode the trails --ahhhhhh it was just about as perfect as it gets.

That core work I did on the big ball yesterday sure has my abs and back sore today. I must have needed it, huh.

Karole
04-01-2009, 01:55 PM
No, my core is not as sore as it was when I was yelling "My core is sore to the core" last year--but I sure can tell I did something different yesterday. I am a bit concerned about my back, however, it gets like Janet says "sort of wonky" and I don't really like the way it is feeling today. I probably will not do all of the stuff I did yesterday as I sure don't want my back out and be unable to exercise at all. I will modify and do other back exercises that I know won't set me up for trouble.

Hello everyone! I'm sorry not to be able to report more often but, well, life happens (at least sometimes) ;). It's 10th week of my teacher's strike and they've decided to give us some 'no-classes' this week and tell how we could prepare on our own to some lighten-up versions of examinations. Difficult to understand what's going on and how it'll end up. This week I try to attend to as much classes as I can (esp. that some of my teachers are fed up with the strike & do a regular class even if they call it 'no class') - anyway, there is no classes next week and then two weeks of spring holidays. (Don't want to bother you with all details.)
Yesterday, I was too tired to exercise but I did on Monday and this afternoon. Hope to do my '20 minutes' on Friday morning and Saturday evening. And I'm still thinking about 'the plan' for April.
Monday - 10 Min Solution Thighs + 10 Min Solution Abs
Tuesday - off
Wednesday - 30 min brisk walk

Have a great rest of the week and get well, Carol!

Good plan ;). It sounds like your back was doing too much assistance on that core work . How about adding in some back-strengthening exercises (like planks) and doing very basic ab work until you get some back strength built up? Just asking - you know your back and core far better than I do!

Well at this point I know my back and core better than I really want to !:D:D

There were some back exercises that I did too and I will delete those til I'm stronger . We do two or three back exercises on my Over 50 dvd (including a plank ) so I thought sure I would be okay on the new ones:o:o

Wow, Shadow, I am very surprized you even had a thought of not exercising and that you were glad to get it over with!
I had visions of you leaping out of bed each day, saying, " yea, it's exercise for me!". I guess even after all the years you have been doing it, there are rare days that even you just don't want to do it.

Tonight, will be a hike with DH when he gets home in a while. I need it,he needs it, we are going to "hike" the hills in our neighborhood. Concrete makes excuses not hold up like the state park, where the trails are closed after a hard rain.

Here is to a new month of exercise!

My back is sore today and I don't know why. There are too many possibilities! I did more treadmill and bike today, hoping to loosen it up. I decided to see if the arc trainer would help, but I'm sad to say it seemed to strain it so I quit after three minutes. That one will be on hold until this clears up, then I'll try it again. I also did abs yesterday, so maybe my posture was not quite right. I've been avoiding the leg press for several weeks so that's not it. I also sleep on my stomach often, which isn't good. (sigh)

Good plan ;). Don't forget to get some extra stretching in, including the hamstrings, which can make the back ache when they are tight.

It's easy - especially in ab work - to let the mind wander and the form relax. Even with repetitive moves like crunches, we need to make sure we stay focused .

Shadow, when Carol said her doc told her to hold the crunch longer to work the transverse--does that mean it would help the back muscles or am I misunderstanding. I will start doing that too if it will help the back get stronger and I have been doing some planks that are supposed to work the back. Which is best to strengthen that area?

HOWEVER...I did it in high heels...does that count for extra??

Apparently only if you do it backwards:rolleyes:
I think I'm gonna try this, it looks like fun!

Karole, they're not back muscles: Transversus abdominus – the deepest muscle layer. Its main roles are to stabilize the trunk and maintain internal abdominal pressure. The doc said that these (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://myhealth.ucsd.edu/library/healthguide/en-us/images/media/medical/hw/h9991417_001.jpg&imgrefurl=http://myhealth.ucsd.edu/library/healthguide/en-us/support/topic.asp%3Fhwid%3Dzm6072&usg=__VpPja300me3POf7OPIP42LZmwKA=&h=500&w=460&sz=95&hl=en&start=18&um=1&tbnid=ZJX01L1fIycPOM:&tbnh=130&tbnw=120&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtransversus%2Babdominus%26hl%3Den%26c lient%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26sa%3DX%26um%3D1) muscles are often under-exercised and suggested I do a slightly different crunch with less weight. That's because I told him that I might have done the ab crunch carelessly.

He also said that over-exercising the six-pack abs only make them protrude more, and I sure don't want that particular effect! :frown: I do want to make sure my core muscles are strong, though.

I did a very careful workout tonight, stretching several times. Ended with a very slow walk for twenty minutes. Treated myself to an ice pack at home for good measure.

Thanks for the info, Carol. I don't have a clue about these muscles--just know when they hurt:D

Upper body resistance today. I'm a bit stiff in my shoulders, but tomorrow's Tae Bo should help that.

Karole - Obviously you now have the answer ;). So now there's a name to the culprit that's bugging you. Makes you feel better, doesn't it :p?

Carol - Thank you so much for the great link and explanation! It was better than what I was coming across. Just as an FYI kinda thing, which exercises did he feel focused more on the 6-pack abs?

Martha - You must have a lot more coordination than I do !

Jackie - I am so happy to see you here :D!!!!! We'll definitely take 20 minutes !

Sandy - Way to go on that resistance exercise !

He didn't really say. I usually use the crunch machine at 90# and simply go forward and back with it. He had already told me not to arch my spine and to only go forward the amount that would lift my shoulder blades off the ground if I were on the floor. That was for "abs".

Yesterday he suggested the lighter weight and holding the forward position for ten, twenty, thirty seconds then resting an equal amount of time between pushes. Both movements included pulling my naval in towards my spine as far as I could. That was for the transverse abs.

I'm going back for another adjustment tonight. I've still got a stabbing pain in my sciatic nerve and this time I'll just rest it and use ice instead of exercise. Doesn't take me long to catch on! :(

Wow - a 10 - 30 second hold . Talk about tough!

Today was 30 minutes on the treadmill at school (while I was prepping). Wow what a difference between the treadmill and my elliptical............much harder workout. I averaged 5.5 miles per hour and did the interval training setting. I think I will use it more often.

Carol, hope that back is better or at least on the mend after your second trip to the chiro.

My back was still wonky today and I had to go shopping for food, so I just now got my exercise in. Dh and I took a brisk 30 min. walk with a few small hills in the mix. I'm really tired.

Hope tomorrow I will be back at some different (resistance)type of exercise. ... (She said, knowing full well that the Shadow could be lurcking about somewhere):D

I'm pretty sure that I don't but they make it look/sound so easy. I have heard that shaking it up is a great thing to do for balance as well as well being, etc. I thought about doing it outside with a bike mirror on glasses but I'm pretty sure I'm not confident enough to do that.
No, I'll only do stuff like that in the privacy of my own garage, I don't think I would even do it at a gym. Sounds pretty edgy.

And Amy, I'm afraid that's just the price you pay unless you fly, frontwards or backwards. At least you didn't get them on your toes and your heels,or at least that's my usual experience with heels. Probably isn't great for your hip, but I'm just guessing.

I have some relief from today's chiro visit. Now if I just don't screw it up! He said the exercise I did last night was just fine. He's in favor of keeping everything moving. I think I'll take a walk tomorrow. I'm still pretty sore and I'm not walking smoothly yet.

Well, after being sick for a couple of days, and not getting much sleep, I almost convinced myself that I would skip Firday's workout, and exercise both Saturday and Sunday instead. But the combination of not wanting to wimp out only 3 days into the challenge, and seeing how well everyone else is doing, really motivated me. And I had to admit that by Friday evening I was really feeling well enough. So I did my usual routine, just shortened it a little.

I'm feeling much better today. This is shopping and library day, which sometimes wears me out a bit, so I may take today off as originally planned.

I just got back from 35 min. walk with my granddaughter and so that is my exercise for the day. It was sooooo nice out there.

Busy day planned, I hope I get it all in.
