Hi all. Serious long time lurker here finally gone member. I wanted to shed light on my experiences w/PPP because I so enjoy reading others'.
This is my third round on PPP. My first time was in my 30's, and I lost 20 lbs pretty quickly. Then last year I lost about the same and slowly regained. Now I'm 46 and although it hasn't been so easy, I can say I have lost 7 lbs in the past 28 days.
As with most people here on the forum, I am a serious carb/binge addict. Once I get off the carbs I am golden. What breaks me is happenings like my parents visiting for 3 weeks and my mother bakes goodies and buys all kinds of sweets and we have family favorites for dinners and everyone says "don't worry about splurging once in a while!." We know how that goes! I'm right back in addict mode. Oh the other major drawback is the fact that I have a daycare in my home, and I am in the kitchen a lot. I make a point of trying to buy only healthful snacks for the 9 kids I watch (1 yo, 2 yo, 3 yo, 3 yo, 5 yo, 3 - 6 yo's and a 9 yo), but most kids these days are raised on such poor diets that they will throw healthy snacks in the trash.
Right now I am happily in ketosis with no cravings whatsoever. I drink 64 to 96 oz a day (except on weekends it's more like half because I'm usually very busy). I have a protein shake in the morning along with a sip of Kefir. I just made my first batch of yogurt yesterday inspired by "The Skinny on Yogurt" thread here and it is good! I love Fage and Oikos and now I wont have to shell out the big bucks for them. We buy raw milk from a local farm for just $2.50 a gallon so it will be pretty affordable. I usually eat meat and a bite of vegetables during the day and a yogurt or cottage cheese, a few almonds if they are around and meat at night (but I try to keep it light or eat early if it's heavy--such as that yummy cauliflower casserole I found on this forum!). I was on a salad roll but haven't been this week. This week I snack on pork skins (I know that sounds gross) though I think they have a ton of sodium which isn't good. So basically a day looks like (up to) 96 oz water, 30 ECC carbs and 90+ protein.
In the mornings I Wii Fit for 1/2 hour (I would do more but this is all I have time for and I get up at 4:15!) I walk 2 miles in the evening with extremely steep hills either way on my road so it's a workout! Again, I may not do this on the weekends because of other activities going on. If I don't walk or the weather is too hot (I will walk in rain but not heat--of course it's been raining here in Maine for about a month so what choice do I have!). If I don't walk then I get on my Bowflex treadclimber for 30 minutes at the highest intensity and listen to an audiobook on my ipod. I find this extremely boring but I stick it out!
I have a plateau that I hit, and I have worked through it mainly by the advice of this forum and other resources. I cut out caffeine, sodium (except for the pork skins) and I jump start my metabolism with the Wii Fit. I noticed no one mentions this on the forums. It's an amazing invention!! It keeps track of everything and keeps you motivated and isn't boring at all. It's also very easy--except for that dang plank exercise, but boy do my abs love it!
I just began taking Tonalin a week ago.
So that is my story in a nutshell. I didn't think I was going to do as well as I have. I watch the bar on the Wii go up and down but all in all it has gone down 7 lbs and almost 2 BMI (27 to 25). I hope I don't stall soon. I would like to lose another 14 lbs.
So to those starting out. You can do it! It may take a few days or a week to see results, and you absolutely have to resist cheating or it will just set you back. If you want to lose, restrict those carbs no matter what and don't overdo eating. If you are eating 5,000 calories of protein you aren't going to lose weight! Exercise and get that metabolism moving! I am nearing perimenopause (waaahh) and I know my metabolism is slowed down significantly. My T3 levels were abnormal at my last year check and then normal a month later so who knows what that means. Oh and this diet corrected my cholesterol levels (along with exercise). My good cholesterol is very high as well. I have white coat syndrome, but my BP is fine (as long as I don't see a white coat, then it goes to crazy numbers like 200/120 (they can't wait to get me out of there). I brought in a home BP monitor w/memory and showed them my bp every day throughout the day, even at my most stressful points (remember, I have a child care in my home with 9 kids--that is extremely stressful).
I better shut up now before this becomes a book! :p
