View Full Version : Need help with canned food
We are leaving next week for 3 weeks in our little rv. We usually eat fresh while at home, and have very little refrigerator space in the rv, plus the food choices in rv parks are limited. We will eat out as much as possible, but what I need are ideas of some canned foods I could buy before I go. I can do the tuna, cheese, jerky, hard-boiled eggs, etc. stuff. Do you know of any other things that we might have with us that will keep me out of the fast food places when I am hungry? (We are not able to take a grill so can't cook the meat or fish outside and don't do much cooking inside due to space and other restrictions.) I also can't carry frozen dinners. We do have a low-power microwave. Thanks.

One thing I eat a lot of is the tiny canned shrimp. Good protein and little carbs. You can make shrimp salad with it too.

ready to drink protein shakes from trader joes. worldwide sport or something like that is the brand. (recent discovery thanks to max)
pork rinds, nuts - good snacks although not canned
vienna sausages / spam (gross? yes. :-))
Sunflower seeds

Pumpkin seeds.
Almonds. Get the good ones from Spain. Lower carb, better flavor. No, really!
Second the nomination of Worldwide Sport Protein Shakes. I like vanilla, and I get the 35g. If you have a lower protein requirement, you can shave some dimes and buy the 21g version. I don't like the chocolate, but I suppose someone must, since they were mostly sold out when I was at TJ's on Saturday (when I left, they were sold out of the Vanilla 35). These are available from The Vitamine Shoppe (if you have one around), Netrition.com if you don't. Probably other sources. I get mine at TJ's, because it's over a J. Alexander, which me and the wife like to eat at. And a brew pub (Goose Island... fantastic beer) that we also like to eat at.
Whoops, strawyed a bit.
Cheese. Cottage cheese is really really workable on this plan in the 4% large or small curd. I dunno why folks don't believe me, but really, if you need <33g per sitting, cottage cheese is your man. But any cheese will work as an add on.
Here's my low power microwave / no oven super meal:
For the protein: Hard sausage/salami. Get a couple different things. Keep it interesting.
For some contrast: get a couple of cheeses. Something soft, like a brie and something hard, like an emmanthaler.
For some acidity: Blueberries, strawberries, with some small amount of whipped cream.
For salt: almonds, or some other nut.
For fun: a nice white wine, maybe a prosecco.
You have yourself a plan.
Oh yeah, no one said, so I gotta: Pork Rinds. Salty, crunchy, snacky and 0g carbs for all intents and purposes.
Thanks. Spinach, baby shrimp, TJ's drink, and Max's special meal. I'm going shopping feeling excited. The rest of the suggestions I already eat except I can't eat pork rinds. Either I wouldn't like them or I'd never be able to stop, so I've ignored their call.

I don't know if you'd find anything in the Trail Food (http://www.proteinpower.com/forum/showthread.php?t=391) thread that would be useful. A tin of protein powder might be handy.
I hope you have a lovely trip :).
