Hi

i found out about Protein Power from Fred Hahn's 'Slow Burn fitness revolution' and decided to try it. i have been following the home exercises since may and i thnk i have increased muscle size.

in the 3 weeks since i started PP i have lost about 7lbs - tho most of that was in the first 2 weeks so probably water weight. but after just 1 week my blood pressure and blood sugar went from being borderline to within normal levels. :jawDrop:

i've tried so many 'diets' gaining and losing and gaining weight since puberty - i was a skinny kid before. each time ending up heavier than i started. i've reached my heaviest of 97kgs twice and i'm so hoping that PP will be what brings me down to my goal weight and keeps me there. i'm a titchy 5'2... this does feel like my last chance at being slim and healthy.

also - 49 years old (with all the hormonal ups and downs that age brings :peeved:)
married for close on 29 years with 2 sons aged 24 and 14.

I think the key, for me at least, is thinking about this as a way of eating ("WOE") and not just a diet. So when I get to goal, whenever that is, I'll adjust so I stay there, but not change the basic low carb style of eating. There really isn't a end to it, just modifications along the way to maintain, lose or gain, as necessary.

Welcome, nougat :). I'm 5' 2" as well, and 48, so suffering the hormonal chaos too .

I did Slow Burn for a while, and I did like it, but when the hormonal stuff started, I found that I was often exhausted, and working at that intensity just made it worse. I'm hoping to start it again soon. I enjoyed it, and definitely felt stronger while I was doing it.

Welcome Nougat,

For me the key is what you already know - this WOE/WOL (way of life) is not just about weight loss - it also does wonderful things for your health and all round well-being. The weight loss will take a while, but with all the other things going for it why would you even think about eating any other way? :)

thank you for taking the time to reply.
i am hoping to feel the good effects of this wol ... i do miss a carb goodie now and again tho - even knowing its not doing me any good.... :)
i expect as i get used to carb-counting it will get easier.

"When I gain five pounds its water, when I lose five pounds its weight!":p

I can't remember where that quote is from but it kind of shows the way of thinking with the high carb/low fat insanity. From what I understand, with LC it probably is water weight but if you stick with the LC WOL you won't regain that weight like you usually do with high carb. But beyond that I think the REALLY important thing to note here is how quickly your health in general has improved!:D Well done.

thank you carol and jilly.
i think i've reached a bump in the road. i've had these carb cravings which for the most part i'm managed to resist.... but a sneak preview of the scales is NOT looking good. i'm quite upset... does nothing work?

I usually drop back to all protein for a few days when I experience cravings, Nougat. I'm not good at resisting them, so I dig a hole and hide. ;)

There is a supplement, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it right now. It's supposed to ease carb cravings. Someone will mention it soon, and I'll go look it up if they don't.

L-Glutamine. ;)

I think Chromium is more likely what Carol was trying to think of - although there was a thing about L-Glutamine ages ago. The issue with that is that glutamine is metabolised into glutamate ... MSG is used as an appetite stimulant/flavour enhancer ... ;)

L-Glutamine: http://www.lowcarbnexus.com/articles/lglutamine.html (http://www.lowcarbnexus.com/articles/lglutamine.html)

Chromium Pico: http://cme.medscape.com/viewarticle/514103

Either way.

Or you could butch on through.

Hi Nougat, I hope you will keep striving. If you were trying to quit smoking I think you'd give it longer than 3 weeks, wouldn't you? I believe PP can give you equal or better benefit.

There are incredibly inspiring folks with great weight loss achivements on this board, but if you hang around long enough you will see that all of them struggle at some time (I'm not one of the great stories - I'm just stubborn) so take heart!

Your body's so much cooler and more complex than a machine and you've just gone through some significant changes - be gentle and let it catch up! (Lowered BP - that's a wonderful side effect, eh? Beats taking meds.) Speaking strictly from my own experience, the longer I stay with PP, the less interest I have in being tricked into eating spoiler carbs.

When I first started PP 2-1/2 yr ago, I had been a vegetarian for 20 year and a meat-o-phobe but I knew that carbs were in charge and something had to give - honestly it was them or me! I started a timid program of deli meats, tuna salad, take out chicken, swiss cheese, blah blah blah. Then I bought the "Field Guide to Meat" - nothing exotic, but it just expanded my horizons to all the animal sources of prtein that I wasn't considering. Maybe in some way you're unconsciously limiting yourself ... give some thought to all the things you can have that you might not in the past and celebrate them.

I sorry if this is redundant or sophmoric to you. I just have been enjoying my own little LC adventure trying not to dwell on the fact that I'm nearly 60 so it's slower, AND I've been down this path before so obviously I still have lessons to learn (duh).

So hang in there! Didn't you notice? This support group even has cartoons

Good health,
Sharvo

thank you.

i think i will just 'butch on through' acquiring anything out of the ordinary is almost impossible and usually way too expensive.

well the cravings have mostly settled they were probably the result of the saturday binge.

but the weight loss - or lack of it is very discouraging and depressing. i'm actually up 1lb.... and i've had 2 days of headache - and today i've got another. after 3 weeks of being headache free. so its not been the best week for me.

but i'm no where near giving up. :)

i weigh myself every day, because it keeps me motivated and also helps me stay in tune with how my body responds to different choices.

but for other people, it may be better to weigh once a week or even once every other week, just to keep the emotional roller coaster of the scale's ups and downs at bay.

hope the headaches go away. PP cures all sorts of ills, but not everything.

I'm taking it for blood glucose control assistance.

It was the L-Glutamine, actually. Malcom, the issue you mentioned is enough to keep me from wanting any part of it. Thanks for the info.

Any family histories of headaches?

I agree that our bodies are sometimes rather resistant to change. Once it gets the idea, it is usually a pleasant surprise.

I have read in a couple of places that taking magnesium can help with migraines. Have you taken mag?? Dr Mike did a whole chapter on magnesium in PPLP so he thinks it is pretty important stuff anyway. Hope it helps.

Hey Nougat, how are you? Have you had anymore migraines? I've been back on lc for almost 3 weeks and have had none. Yay!! I've been on and off lc for 9 years now(hopefully for good this time) and it always helps with my migraines. I hope it helps you too.:)
