Okay gang, let's get to moving it!!!! Some of the reporting around here has been pretty shoddy, so let's at least set a goal for the month to report more consistently, okay ;)?
If at all possible, DO SOMETHING NEW this month! It won't hurt ya, honest :p. In fact, it will be quite good for you !
So... who's going to report in first for the week :paranoid:????

Probably not, I'm afraid, because my brother and his wife will be staying from Monday to Thursday. I'll try to keep up with the exercising, and let you know how it's going when I get a chance :).

Everything went well. My son is faster, but maybe I'll tie a cinder block, no he'd notice that...I'll have to think on that one. The rain held off, this time. The issue with riding a recumbent in the rain is you are right on the puddles so you get it from the top and...
New TerraTrike (tour) but haven't take possession yet. We rode it a bit tonight and I think it will be a blast to add. It uses different muscles b/c of the angle. (Shadow, does that count a something new :)
I'd like to do a 50 mile ride by labor day.
I'm going to try to get off early enough to ride in the daylight. I don't have lights so it won't be safe after dark. Don't worry Karole, I know you're trailriding now, but I'll keep doing those until you take them from me...
Who knows maybe you'll be doing the long walks and I'll get to do (bike) trail riding:nod:

I'll bet you are antsy ! Just don't push it too soon, Isis - those of us who have had sprained ankles have all seemed to have learned the hard way how long it takes to fully recover from one ;).

Well I only got two rides in in spite of it being a long weekend here in BC. Better than nothing though, considering how much work we are doing to get the house ready for sale! It's officially on the market now.
I rode with my brother this morning, that was interesting:rolleyes: He's an avid biker. I just told him I'd meet him at the top of the hill eventually. One of my better workouts lately, I was pushing pretty hard so as not to completely embarrass myself :p
Something new huh? Well its not really new but haven't weight trained in waaaayyy too long so want to get some of that mixed in with the riding.

Sorry not to be here on Sunday:o. I did my M&S, of course.
I've started my third week of 'Upper Body Blast':
Sun - 30 min total body (Cardio Flex Band Workout dvd)
Mon - 10 min Kickbox Bootcamp Arms + 15 min Pilates Abs & Arms
No swimming on Sat, Sun nor Mon; tomorrow we are going to swim in the mid-morning. Will report tomorrow if I really did (so hard to swim in the morning!).
Hello everyone...
I know you probably don't remember me as it's been about 1000 years since I've been here () but I do FINALLY have some reporting to do.
Saturday 8/1 : walk, just under 4 miles
Saturday 8/1 : bike ride, 30 minutes
Sunday 8/2 : canoe trip. not strong canoeing, but paddled for 2 hours.
I hope to go for a walk or a bike ride today...I HOPE to.

I'm a really lucky person, in that the bike trail which is less than a mile from home, is over 40 miles so I can do a "loop" and get 50 pretty easily. Well except for the easy part. The trail is there.. it's just the me part that may be the problem.:o I'm trying to organize my life enough to do the same number of miles during the week that I'll do one day on the weekend. I'm rusty but it seems like that building process should work and it seems like the idea was listed in Bicycling. If that goes well then I'll sign up for an organized ride like Sugarloaf (a FL mountain;);) or one of the local rides, but I'd like to do it myself before I sign up with a group.
I like to set it as the goal, if I don't make it, at least I'll have made progress.

Reporting yesterday's workout. Upper body, arc trainer 15 min., dreadmill 15 min. After three days without going, lifting was easier. I've noticed that before.
four mile bike ride last night...and I was SOOOooo sleepy...
I fought it...I forced myself to get out there and DO it.
But MAN was I tired.
Tonight nothing because it's National Night Out and I'm hosting.

Broadly speaking, I started my day with swimming. The sea was really calm and I had a great time. It was much harder to remember ;) to do my usual workout while back home but I did it! (Tomorrow I can leave the house one hour later so I could try to do my programme before.)
Tue - 7 min WU + 12 min lower body + 7 min stretch

Well, even without Wikopedia it's near Mickey's place:) Wik says, "Sugarloaf Mountain is the highest point in peninsular Florida at 312 feet (95 meters) above sea level. It is in Lake County, near the town of Clermont. ..."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugarloaf_Mountain_(Florida) -
I have ridden it a few times to train for other rides, but really, there are only so many times you can turn around and ride it...again. Over passes are generally better for learning how to climb on a bicycle or TerraTrike.
So, I a home so late I'm chasing daylight, no ride tonight but Buddy and I don't mind long power walks in the dark.

Over passes are generally better for learning how to climb on a bicycle or TerraTrike. My sister used to do a Lung Association ride in the Maine mountains. Michigan's got some hills, but not like Maine. She said little old ladies would pass her going uphill. She just couldn't train hard enough here!
Tonight I did fifteen minutes on the arc trainer at varying speeds and inclines. Then I walked on the treadmill for another ten. My legs are still twitchy from yesterday's excellent workout, so I called it a day. My knee is stiff now, so it was a good call.
Have a great night everyone!

I began serious moving & shaking on Sunday and so far, for August, I'm 4/4 :D.
I've gotten up early every day and done a Gilad video. Old school (80s:p) stretches and reps and easy (for those with 2 left feet) aerobics (not easy on the work-out).
I've been more active at home, too, although dh & I haven't walked in a little more than a week. I work out while I'm in the pool and when my grandblessing is over it's more than a work-out:D

Weekly (or is that weakly?) ride night on Wednesdays for me so got in a 20 mile jaunt. I'm getting stronger on the hills so that's good to see. We have a lot of hills here on Vancouver Island!
Unfortunately in the 20 minutes I've been home I've eaten 2 proscuitto/swiss cheese rollups and half a SF chocolate bar:eek:
That's the problem with evening rides for me, I get home too hungry to ignore and just go to bed.
Will ride to work tomorrow, 10 miles each way with a REALLY big hill (4.5 miles of the ride) on the way to work. At least getting home is easier.:o
Keep up the good work everyone.

Apparently, I lost Wednesday. So I have two days to report:
Wed - swimming & 5 min WU + 20 min upper body + 5 min stretch
Thu - swimming & 7 min WU + 15 cardio (low impact aerobics) + 5 min stretch
I really dislike doing cardio/aerobics! It has to do something with my lack of coordination, I am always one movement behind the tape! Awful, feel like a bad pupil... It's ridiculous, I know:o.
The weather is changing, the English Channel (aka La Manche) is getting some impressive waves. I'm not sure about swimming tomorrow. Anyway, on Friday morning I'm doing cardio/upper body/pilates abs.
The weekend is going to be tough: my Talmud Master and his wife are coming to Deauville on Friday. Apart from having Shabbat dinner toghether, we are going to visit local Häagen-Dazs café/shop on Sunday - our annual visit. Will have to do more cardio afterwards, I'm afraid:paranoid:.

Finished work early today (yea!) so added an 4 extra miles to the ride home. Also stopped for groceries so the last hill climb was even more fun with the added weight:rolleyes: Will be mowing the lawn this aft. Did I mention I have a completely manual mower? I'm 7/7 for exercising in August, so far:D:D
I woke 10 minutes before my alarm this morning, heart pounding from a bad dream, where all I had to protect myself from a wackadoodle lady who was holding me captive in a house with 2 severed heads (one being kept in a sink with ice cubes) and once "modern" furniture and a beautiful piano that someone had spilled a liquid on and let ruin 1/3 the finish, and my cell phone had no service, was a stack of lids from small, square disposable plastic food storage containers:eek:
I was about 2 seconds away from resetting the alarm, but told myself you will feel better AFTER exercise, not instead of exercise;)

I have about 20 more pounds that I want to lose. I have lost about 45. I had been doing treadmill and weight lifting, but next May, I plan to climb Mount Kilamanjaro, so I decided to step it up and get a personal trainer. He got me into these kettlebell workouts, which basically looks like a cannonball with a handle, which is how they originated. We do circuit training and the workouts are quite intense.
I was doing about 50 carbs per day, but needed more to make it through the more taxing workouts. If I cut back on carbs, I am more exausted when the workout is finished, and have to take more rest time during. However, if I up the carbs, I stop losing weight, and have been at a plateau for the last six weeks.
As I stated earlier, I want to lose another 20 lbs, but at the same time, I want to get the most out of my workouts.
Any ideas are appreciated.

Sorry, tough break getting caught by Shadow. I didn't check carefully and didn't see your question and push the self destruct button before she got here and caught you...
The short answer is sometimes, pretty exposed. Recumbents (13 yrs) in general and tadpoles (days)specifically, feel pretty low. Oddly enough, it (so far,) hasn't felt unsafe, drivers just notice. I'm still developing turning intersection skills, they frighten me. (Other cars turning, parking lots, drivers tend to look up and out to scan, not down.) I cannot bunny hop nor jump curbs with the model I have, but I can ditch pretty easily. I didn't ride in Orlando proper when I lived there but rode in burbs and back roads, frequently. You won't know how you feel on it until you develop your style and your skills. I am thrilled to ride, b/c my legs and body get the work out and my back, knees and hips are safe. Even if you aren't considering other brands you may want to search "their" reviews. Sorry Shadow, hope I didn't stray too far.:o

I cannot bunny hop nor jump curbs with the model I have, but I can ditch pretty easily. Sorry Shadow, hope I didn't stray too far.:oThanks for the insight. I'm not really interested in riding in town - work is about 40ks (umm 25 miles?) one way, and that isn't flat - so commuting really isn't an option ... unless I could sleep all day to prepare for the ride home!!:o;)
The folding option appeals because I can then drive somewhere nice for a ride - probably on relatively lightly trafficked open roads. I have heard that people give them more room than say an ordinary bike or walker because of the novelty (although this may be part of the sales spiel) ... but then it only takes one idiot ... In terms of brands I'd welcome your ideas as well. Greenspeed I think are pretty good and they have the advantage of being local (although I think sadly the frames at least are now made in China or Taiwan). Terra Trikes are available here and might be slightly cheaper - but of course you can spend plenty more on all the options on any of them.
I think it is possible Shadow will cut us some slack as we are at least talking about exercise!:p

Discussing bikes certainly should fall into an acceptable exercise discussion:D I haven't ever considered a trike myself, just bought a new hybrid. My commute to work is a little shorter (20 miles round trip) than yours would be Malcolm, but pretty hilly! At least going home is the easy half.
Back to exercising. No riding today, 10 hours at work pretty much writes me off:rolleyes: Plan to finish mowing the lawn tomorrow (with that silly push mower I have) and a long ride on Sunday. Aiming for 50-60 miles.
This evening I'm exercising my right elbow.....

Oooh elbow exercising ... maybe I should feel more comfortable being here after all :p (Jilly I am pretty proficient with my left one as well ... but it does take a lot of dedication to get there!;))

I am completely ambidextrous when elbow exercising  Learned it when I had the right arm in a cast for a bit. (the injury was not elbow exercising related)

but then it only takes one idiot ...true and apparently no shortage of those, anywhere.

But look at the bright side if you did your 80 a day, you'd become the poster child for movers and shakers. That would be bad for us b/c you'd probably leave this board.
Folding would be nice, b/c most of them really want an SUV or heavy duty bike rack. A sales guy told me it can fit in a honda civic hatch back, with the boom between the front seats, not sure how that would work, really.
On bents in general, I've never been out that I saw someone that that they didn't comment either at the light drive next to me and ask, at least once per ride...that part isn't myth.
Steering is a personal pref thing linkage vs direct; parts, customer service; and how low are you comfortable. My knees are tired at the end of a ride, and standing from a crouch isn't the same as throwing your leg over. I really wanted it so for me it was a good deal.. But if it was available to try, I'd try a Catrike Villager. They are manufactured an hour or so away.
Sorry for the tardy response, life and biking happened again. It's raining, again, now.

Thanks for your thoughts. I don't think it is likely that I will become a poster child ... anywhere ... any time soon:p. I have almost finished building a house - so I reckon that gives me a point or two in the moving and shaking stakes over the last couple of years. Mind you, as Jilly no doubt appreciates, half the point of building is the excuse for liquid pain killer elbow bending sessions ... which is yet more exercise! (hmm, what sort of pose do you recommend for the poster? ;))

I think I forgot to post my exercise last night! I did both upper and lower body. My knee was feeling so strong that I decided to do just a few leg extensions, but it wasn't a good idea. I saw the chiro this morning and he tapped me back into place.
Good thing you have that chiro ;)! Way to go on that exercise - I was beginning to wonder :p!
PS - do you honestly think it would get me anywhere if I did heckle Malcom  ?

Sorry, tough break getting caught by Shadow. I didn't check carefully and didn't see your question and push the self destruct button before she got here and caught you...
!
Sorry Shadow, hope I didn't stray too far.:o
Not at all - I was looking forward to your answer, too . I take care of a disable woman and I am scared silly for her to be out riding her electric scooter without me because I'm afraid someone is gonna squish her....

Discussing bikes (or other equipment) is definitely allowed ;). Besides, Malcom and Martha are being quite entertaining ! I would definitely have to like riding a heck of a lot better than I do to ride 20 miles!

Hello, Dresen :). If the kettleball workouts are too tiring, you may have jumped into them too quickly or too often to give yourself time to adjust to the higher intensity level. There is also the concept that we can eat according to how we train, or train according to how we eat. You just need to decide what is most important for you. If you're exercising to be healthy & fit, there is no need to push to exhaustion. If you're training to become an athlete, then it is a whole different approach. At any rate, you can cut back and ease into the workouts (either fewer per week or shorter sessions) or you can up the carbs just enough to get you through. You didn't say how many more you added - and it could be you overcompensate. It could also be that you just need a few more before your exercise but then can "skimp" on them the rest of the day.
Here in M&S we are only interested in being healthy and fit :). The more serious and science based discussions on fitness are held in the Using It forum. You will most likely want to post your question there where you will get a better (and more scientific) response.

2nd one 1st, maybe you haven't tried the right one for 20 miles...
I know, I have the same concerns. Unfortunately, around here seniors on scooters are so common, it is the opposite of being on a recumbent. Drivers are extremely cavalier ish. The seniors/non seniors on scooters that I know, would like to remain independent and are doing their best to blend, not call attention to themselves. That's the very worst thing. You never want to be invisible on the road, regardless of the mode of transportation. I know my advise may not be welcome, but if you have any sway, try to talk up visibility and acting deliberately. That's true for scooters as well as sharing the road, on the other moving and shaking ways; sorry for the passion.

But of course your advice is welcome :)!!! You're right - constantly being stared at because you're a "crip" does not tend to make you aim to draw attention to yourself deliberately .... Don't apologize for the passion - we should all feel passionately about something :D!
Mmm - think she'd consider it overboard if I rigged her scooter with a constantly honking horn and flashing lights ????
