But *I* did  - and I exercised again today, too ;)!

I am so proud of all of you for being here & continuing to do your M&S while I was away . Even if there was quite a bit of poking at me while I was gone  :p!

So now you had all better watch out - my whip arm is all relaxed and ready for action !

So let's get some M&S reports coming in before I get a crackin' :D!

Yikes! I better ride fast so the Shadow can't catch me. :paranoid: Going for a ride with my brother this morning, he rides to work everyday as well as around for pleasure so is in pretty good shape. Riding with him always makes me work a bit harder, which of course is a good thing. After that yard work and house cleaning. I was lazy yesterday, didn't get it done. :o

Glad to have you back Shadow, did you have lots of fun?

Have done Tae Bo and leg exercises this morning. We don't have any plans for today, other than perhaps giving the dog a bath. REALLY exciting! Oh, well. Laid back days are good too.

As expected the ride with my brother was a good one. Ie: I couldn't keep up, but tried hard to. :o We rode out to neat local spot, called the "Woodland Gardens", and hiked the trails for 45 min. then rode home. About 34 miles. Then of course we had to have a beer when we were done..... At least the Guiness I drink is fairly LC for beer. Now to get a bit of house cleaning done and throw a roast in the oven. A woman's work is never done right?

Right, Jilly, but I didn't do any today. :D And proud of it!

Shadow, welcome back! :)

I walked for an hour and a half today, which is all the knees would allow. It was on soft ground (at the flea market) and that's probably the only reason I got away with it. They are really stiff now!

Welcome back, Shadow! (If I only had knew you were back, I would have come here on Sunday...)
Well, I try my best to M&S, even if - but only from time to time- I keep dreaming about having a couple of days off; in a row, of course. The presence of the whip is going to help me to fight these naughty thoughts, I'm sure:).
Sunday - 30 min cardio flex band workout
Monday - 10 min cardio + 15 min upper body + 8 min basic pilates
Tuesday - 30 min lower body

When we rode on Sunday, I had some jelly leg/hand shake issues, (very technical terms, I realize,) when I stopped, mid ride. I was trying to shoot a few pics, for bragging rites etc. but I was shaky enough that I abandoned that idea. I know in weight lifting (see I was paying attention, Shadow,) that it's a good sign, but it sure felt weird riding.

I thought I'd better drop in. I'm still around, and even did some exercise today! (And some other days ;).) I've been struggling a bit because of trying to get this asthma stuff to settle down. It's not extreme, but between the thing itself and the side effects of the inhalers, I've been feeling a bit off-colour, so my exercise has been a bit lacklustre :o. I'm still trying to get it all worked out. It is actually better when I'm more active, but that's not what comes naturally to me .

I did upper and lower body today because I missed Monday. My knees were actually civil to me this morning! I still kept the arc trainer to ten minutes, but then I went through Walmart for a half hour! :peeved: We were out of salad, but I bought $72 worth of food. Did a short photo shoot tonight with my younger cousin who needs a mentor. Mostly walked on grass through a park.

Tomorrow will be a rest day. :)

Hi everybody!

I'm new to the board, and am excited to start really working out again. Anyway, I walked 4 miles today (to work and home for lunch, then back to work, then home at the end of the day) then I walked the dog and took her to the park. So I'm going to guess I walked right around 5 miles today.

If the weather holds, I will run on my lunch hour tomorrow.

Looking forward to getting to know you all.

I didn't get any exercise in today, because the plumber was around until 6pm, but I did plenty of moving and shaking! Carried a stepladder up four flights of stairs, then at the top was asked for a torch. Back down to the basement, then up four flights again. Up and down numerous times to fetch and carry, bleed radiators etc. Mostly cardio, but maybe carrying the ladder, and moving the kitchen cupboards out of the way to give him access to the boiler behind would count as resistance?

Thanks, Shadow. :) I have to keep remembering that, it is frustrating to see where I am now physically as compared to where I used to be. But I am trying to stay positive, and remember that I've been there once, I can get there again. ;)

Happy Thursday everyone.

That's the spirit, Ramona :D! All we can ever do is try to improve the present - we can never recapture the past, no matter who hard we try ;). Very wise words indeed Shadow. If you spend too much time looking back you risk tripping over something in front of you.

I'm pleasantly sore from yesterday. Today I have to get the lawn mowed, that's always a good sweaty workout. It hasn't been mowed in several days due to heavy rains so it's a bit long, that makes the push mowing really tough. :peeved: Then I have to pack up my gear for the bike ride, we head to the mainland tomorrow.

Have a great day everyone.

The last two days I didn't get to the exercise until mid to late afternoon. Both days my hubby came home before I was very far into it. Now I'm not saying I can't exercise when he's here, but I'd stop to talk with him, get distracted and before I knew it it as bedtime.

So . . . today I started right after he left after lunch, so I knew he wouldn't be back for a while and - finally - got in my full upper body resistance work. WHEW!

Thanks, Shadow, but no raspberries for me, please!

I was only kidding :D:D I would like to join in, if I may?

(Actually I did a long post for here a couple of mornings ago and the flippin’ computer froze up and I lost it  . I have a very old, slow computer that was destined for throwing away as it couldn’t run the latest games that the males of the family wanted, that I use sitting up in bed when I am resting my leg, but it is struggling to run Windows XP. I have some more RAM coming for it today, together with a new wireless adapter.)

I have Right Foot Drop which means that I can only move slowly, whether walking or turning around. I have to wear a splint and the leg gets very swollen as the day goes on, hence resting it in a fairly elevated position. My balance is poor, as messages between brain and foot don’t get through due to nerve damage somewhere around my knee. During the colder months I do try to walk for 30 minutes most days of the week, first thing in the morning so that it is done and I can forget about it. Otherwise I just keep procrastinating and don’t do it at all. I get too hot during the summer. My doctor cannot find any reason for this so I can only think that it is the excess weight that does it. To give an idea of my speed that is approximately 2500 steps by my pedometer – cheap and probably not 100% accurate – and by my best efforts at remembering to count. I do find that as winter progresses I do the same circuit slightly faster. That amount of activity brought my BP down to normal, without drugs, from being at a level to begin to cause concern, and has kept it down for three years. Unfortunately I tripped over in February, which has put me off. It took two men to get me up again :o:o:o:o. When I looked at the pavement there was just the tiniest ripple in the tarmac that I hadn’t spotted so now when I am out I find myself looking down all the time, which takes away the pleasure of being outdoors, especially in the park that I usually walk round.

I do have a kettlebell, which I bought after seeing them on the UK version of “The Biggest Loser” because that seems to be used with the feet planted in one place. However I cannot get my head around the book that I bought to explain what do with it. The book is written in a strange style – very bitty, and lots of side boxes and I cannot seem to see the wood for the trees. I need to find a good DVD that I can follow that will play in the UK.

Sandy has mentioned in my Journal that there are videos of exercises done sitting down, but can anyone (Shadow?) suggest anything else that I can do at home? Aerobics videos are useless because, certainly at current weight, I simply cannot move my right leg/foot quickly enough to keep up.

What a challenge for you :(! I find that it has to be done first thing in the morning, too, or forget about it. The day just slips away....

When I used to use a HRM, my RHR and AHR were always better in the winter . And back before I got osteoarthritis in my hip joints, it was definitely easier to do HIIT in the winter. It's just too hard in the summer - especially as menopause has made most temperatures unbearably hot for me .
Unfortunately I tripped over in February, which has put me off. It took two men to get me up again. When I looked at the pavement there was just the tiniest ripple in the tarmac that I hadn’t spotted so now when I am out I find myself looking down all the time, which takes away the pleasure of being outdoors, especially in the park that I usually walk round.
I always walk with my head down to keep from tripping :o. You're right - the scenery isn't as good but at least I'm remaining upright ;).

My best suggestions for you would be to look at collagevideo.com where they have a lot of "specialty" videos when you're ready for a video. Also, there are exercises on about.com that can be done sitting down.

I need to run to the bank for work right now, but when I get back I'll post some things that might work for you.

Do you by chance have any free weights or a resistance band/tubing? Just trying to think of some options for you.

Edit:
Okay, I'm back. Didn't even miss me, did ya, lol? Anyway, if you are aiming for resistance training sitting down, I can definitely make suggestions. I just need to know what you have that you can use for resistance.

But then I got to thinking you're maybe wanting cardio? If that's the case, I'm afraid it's out of my league :(...

Carol , we had a great ride but I have been so busy since we got back that I am meeting myself coming and going. ---Believe me you won't know how you found time to work at a full time job once you retire too !!!

Not quite 3 weeks and we will go do anothertrail ride, then 6 days another ride and then straight on into the last ride of the season. We will only be home about 6 days in October. But we love it , what can I say.

Ah, but I'm speshul :D Actually cardio is no problem. Walking or stationary cycle takes care of that aspect, certainly while I am this heavy.

Shadow, I have wasted £££s in the past on various bits of kit which quickly got shoved to the back of a cupboard as I wasn't confident about what to do with it. There are some dumb bell thingies upstairs that can be filled with water, sand or both to increase the weight. I have some strong elastic cords with loops at the 4 free ends, and with a joint/connector in the middle which is adjustable some way. I think there might be some sort of band too. Tomorrow afternoon whilst my sons are out watching their soccer team lose, and unable to make fun of me, I will dig it all out and take pics so you can view my arsenal.

As you can no doubt tell, I am clueless about resistance work.

Ah yes - I think most of us have gone the long way around finding just the simple basics of what we need . Okay - step one.... Fill your "dumb bell thingies" with your choice of sand or water. IMHO, water is best. You don't want to find after a few uses that you're leaking sand everywhere ;). Step two.... Dig out those cords and bands and let me see what you got so I know for sure what you're using. There are different exercises for bands and tubes so I'm thinking right now it's the tubes you have. Step three.... Get prepared for action !

As you can no doubt tell, I am clueless about resistance work.

OMG It is worse than I thought.

I haven'y unearthed the dumb bells yet, but have found
Body Shaper (the thing I tried to describe in my post yesterday) The box reminded me that this is used on the floor, and I have much difficulty getting up again.
Reebok resistance tube of some sort (complete with video still in cellophane wrapping :o:o)
Aerobic weights, hand held and for ankles, with velcro. Why on earth did I want to subject my poor knees to any more weight?
Kettlebell (well, pair of, actually)

Pics to follow later - I am still in bed risking the old computer swallowing my post (Need to pin DS1 down long enough to fit the RAM stick for me and turbo charge this thing). Would be good to actually get some value out of what I have spent, at least with that lot I shouldn't get bored.

I have bands, I have tubes, I have a ball, I have small weights, I have ankle weights w/velcro. I have dvds to show me how, but I can't get motivated to do it.:(

3. Aerobic Ankle weights 454g each I doubt that this would go round my right ankle except possibly first thing in the morning, but before long I hope to be walking round my 2500 step circuit, and I am not sure how big my ankle will be when I get back. besides I will be puffed out.

I haven't dug out the dumb bells yet. There is a lot of stuff in the way, and I wanted DH to help me inventory the freezer so there wasn't time.

There are exercises to do with the hand/ankle weights which I could do, so I don't know why I never used them. The Reebok instruction booklet is next to useless and keeps referring to some gizmo to attach to a door, but that wasn't in the set, so pretty useless to witter on about it. There is, of course, the unviewed video. As I said I knew when I was walking my circular route quicker by the time it took, how do you measure progress using this stuff?

(The boy's team has indeed been beaten by 4 goals to 0, so they are as miserable as anything. Wish me luck!)

Hi, Needle, you are right on about me being on this site early !! I went to bed at 11 p.m. last night and woke up for some reason at 1:26 A.M. and that was it. I finally got up out of bed and came to the computer around 2:30 or so. Still haven't gotten in a nap !! Talk about tired. Oh well, I should saw some big logs tonight.

I sure don't know why I keep getting the jnew exercise stuff -- I keep trying to find some kind of resistance workouts that can keep me going --so that may be it.

Bikes are dry and we're contemplating dinner ideas. Just finished 6W Cure. Looks like Shadow has been right all along (big sigh.) I think you've made a heck of a start anyway, NW :D!

There are exercises to do with the hand/ankle weights which I could do, so I don't know why I never used them.
Maybe because you packed them away before you ever opened them !
The Reebok instruction booklet is next to useless and keeps referring to some gizmo to attach to a door, but that wasn't in the set, so pretty useless to witter on about it.
The door attachment is relatively cheap but for some inane reason, is always a separate piece . You do have options, though, if you have any kind of sturdy thing to use to wrap the band around - a bed post, the leg of a heavy piece of furniture, etc. Or DH could hold it for you, if he's willing ;). There is, of course, the unviewed video.
That might be a good place to start !
As I said I knew when I was walking my circular route quicker by the time it took, how do you measure progress using this stuff?
By how easy your reps/routine becomes... The tension in the bands may seem tough at first, but as you increase strength, you'll notice you have to do more & more reps to feel it working. Then you can graduate to MORE toys !

(The boy's team has indeed been beaten by 4 goals to 0, so they are as miserable as anything. Wish me luck!)

Luck AND hugs!

Okay.... here is a little bit for you to do some homework on. The thing to remember is that all bands, tubes, dumbbell, etc exercises are pretty much interchangeable. All you have to do is understand how something works -and then adapt it to what you're using.

For example, to do dumbbell curls (for the biceps) with dumbbells, you simply hold your arms at your side and curl the lower part up and down, keeping the elbow fixed by your waist. To adapt that to a resistance band or tubing, you stand on the band or tubing and then curl your arms up and down. See what I mean?

Anyway, I looked up several sites to try and give you a variety while showing different tubes/bands. What you need to do is browse over them until you see something you think you can do.

Just remember to not feel "married" to anything they show. For example, the picture on your body shaper shows a woman sitting on the floor. You do NOT have to sit on the floor - you can sit on a chair and extend your legs. If that doesn't give you enough tension, you do NOT have to hold the handles - you can get a more tight grip by just holding on to the tubes themselves. You can also put them under your feet and hold one tube/hand only. Does that make sense?

The best caution I can give you is to slowly do at least the first few reps until you're sure you have the band anchored securely and time hasn't eroded or weakened it. We don't want any accidents !

BTW, I don't "follow" any of the sites below. These are just what came up on a Google search... I do, though, sometimes visit about.com or sparkpeople.com when I need an exercise illustration for someone.

Now if you have any questions, please ask! I just thought something with pictures would be easier for you to understand than me trying to explain it :).

The new item that I ordered, and was shipped as of yesterday, is a book with photos of how to do it , plus it has a dvd as well. I read the reviews and one lady was in her 70's and said it was a good work out for her and others were much younger so I guess it is adaptable for all. We'll see how it goes.

Today the exercise was walking, horse training and then riding for an hour.
