HI, ya'll,
So far, two 30 minute workouts of Quick Callanectics done this month.

Today, will be 15 minutes on mini trampoline, another 30 minutes of Callanetics for Abds/waist.

Just over a cold, rainy and cold outside, (32) (for Texas, that is). Waiting a few days to go out again.

No wet noodle bashing from Shadow for me!

Monday 12/7/09

Monday morning, rise and shine! Time to get moving!! >Looking for brownie points from Shadow<

Today is the first Monday in December. That means my monthly doctor's appointment and weigh-in at the VA hospital. I will post results later in the Challenge thread.

I did do my regular exercises this morning. And I may have messed up. I took my sugar pill before I exercised forgetting that I'm not eating breakfast this morning due to fasting labs. I hope my sugar doesn't drop to low.

My workout:
30 minutes leg work on the pedaling machine.
15 minute warmup on the pedaler for the upper body.
1 set 15 reps of bicep curls, tricep extensions, front deltoid raises, side deltoid raises, wrist curls, bench press and butterflies using five pounds.
10 minute upper body cool down on the pedaler.

Everybody have a nice day.

All is well with the exercise this morning. HIIT done early on along with a 20 minute stretch out. A short stroll later- it is too cold here for a long one.
The rest of the week is planned as follows; t/th/s= resistance and isometrics w/f- HIIT

Congratulations :D! But you know that comes from M&S, not from resting ;)! JK !
I know that it comes from eating according to PP. I try to exercise so that I don't seize up.

There is a possibility that this dreadfully long spell of wet and windy weather is at last to be replaced by more settled, but colder. As long as the white stuff doesn't settle on the pavements, I will be out of the front door like a geriatric greyhound out of a trap :D because walking makes me feel better than anything else does, it is more interesting to go out, and besides I want to see if I am a bit faster without the pounds that I have lost. I will have to build up from scratch again though.

Have been on the exercise bike and done a bit of resistance this morning, but have to admit that my heart isn't really in it :o I am also going up and downstairs much more often as my sewing machine is upstairs, and it is warmer up here, but people will keep knocking on the door :( The first trip down the stairs for breakfast is stiff and slow indeed. but I do improve as the day goes on.

I know that it comes from eating according to PP.
Very good ! That's why I said I was joking about the exercise because eating is at least 80% of it. Actually, once you hit menopause, I would say it's 90% of it. The exercise is just the added cream on top.
I try to exercise so that I don't seize up.
And it helps with that, too .

Absolutely! I have to do my cardio indoors this week because of the weather and I really am not happy about it so I know just what you mean.
... and besides I want to see if I am a bit faster without the pounds that I have lost.
How fun :D!
I will have to build up from scratch again though.
Once you build a good base, you can get back to par a lot sooner than when you first began :).

Have been on the exercise bike and done a bit of resistance this morning, but have to admit that my heart isn't really in it :o

Hi, I'm done with my workout now too, at least for the day. I did a 10 min. upper body workout and a 10 min. lower body workout --both with bands so I got a good workout and feel good.

Brrrr you guys are freezing me to death... it is only 38 here but that sounds like a heat wave compared to the talk of minus degrees and blizzards. Stay warm guys.

Glad Mr. Geezer is back home with you Carol !! I know you feel better with him home. Plus having your own car back helps too.

Shadow, it looks like you have a lot of hard working people here this morning already---do we get to have a party????

The results are in:
Weight: 288 down 5 pounds

B/P: 120/89

B/S: 55

My cholesterol & trigylcerides are good. I don't have the numbers just going on the word of my doc.

I figured my sugar would be low. Sugar pill plus exercise minus breakfast = low sugar!
A 6oz. can of Minute Maid OJ took care of that. I didn't think to get carb counts on it. I'll check when I get home.

Hi Movers & Shakers!

Stretching before breakfast is today's fare. I've noticed an improvement in my range of motion since starting the stretching routine.

Geriatric greyhound reporting in :D

First day for weeks that the pavements were mostly dry and nothing was falling from the sky, so off I went. I was out for about 40 minutes but that included 2 stops to make appointments, so probably just over 30 actually walking. My legs felt quite odd and I was wobbling like a drunk  but I do feel better for it, although I won't be doing any time trials for a while. There are still piles of leaves where the wind has swirled them around, but I think regular walking can resume now.

Will do some resistance later, whilst DS2 is out.

As long as you're not feeling over-trained, you most certainly can continue :). I, personally, would worry that my strength training wasn't doing as much as it could if I had "pre-exhausted" myself on endurance right before it. But I could be wrong, too ;). We are all different and have different goals. Just make sure you pay close attention to what your body is telling you :).

Keep in mind, also, that I am totally unfamiliar with the arc trainer. So maybe it's no different than doing standard cardio - like sprints, step cardio, etc - that also tones the legs.

Carol and Shadow- The rower is perfect for HIIT exercise done for 10 to 15 minutes each session- 3/4 times per week and kills the 2 birds with one stone. :)
The object is to warmup for 1-2 minutes, go all out for 30-45 seconds, rest for 30-45 secs, and all out again, a total of 5-6 all outs. This raises the heart rate to 70-85% for brief periods. Cool down for 2 minutes. Notice the physiques on sprinters as opposed to runners.
I believe there are some forum experts on this subject (Max/Sbear??) who gave a cease and desist order to a newbie doing 90 minutes cardio.

Today I did twenty minutes on the arc trainer (it's like an elliptical, Lita, only with slightly better ergonomics and easier on knees.) and five minutes on the rowing machine. Then I did the thigh resistance machine, just to round out my resistance work of yesterday. (I am NOT O/C!!!)

I found an instructive rowing machine website with technique advice and PICTURES! Now I just have to practice. BTW, they said it's not about the resistance, but about rowing fast and smoothly to get a good aerobic workout and develop muscles endurance and tone.

Tomorrow will be a rest day and then I'll do resistance on Thursday, endurance on Friday. Barring interference from the weather, that is!

Not able to leave during the day to get in an extra set, but I go up the 95, and down the 95, no stoppping in the middle!

The elevator will (should) be fixed by Friday. Three weeks of stairs. I think I should continue to take them...since it seems to be the only exercise I can squeeze in these days.

I finally have something to report, so I can come out of hiding...;) DS and I did an upper body workout last night and plan to hit the lower body tomorrow. She didn't have time to do a whole body thing last night, she was just going to spot/time me but I forced her to do something at least.

She was a bit late, again , so I spent some time on the eliptical while waiting. I don't know how anyone can spend more than 30min on a cardio machine without losing their mind. Biking I can do for hours, in good weather anyway, static cardio sucks. I've been thinking about trying racquetball again, I used to play all the time and loved it, but I'm not sure if my knees can take it. All that racquetball in the past is a major component of my knee problems. Plus I haven't played in so long I'm sure I would absolutely suck now. And I have to consider my shoulder issues too, I have impingement syndrome in my right shoulder. (aka frozen shoulder) I was waaay too hard on my body in the past. I might as well just take up backgammon....

Hi there, I haven't done anything (studying does not count)for several days and don't feel very proud about it. I feel a bit low, probably due to lack of sun. Sorry to report that I have re-injured my right knee. This is a very old injury from 40 YA (never had it fixed:() that recurs when I do something stup.... uh, without thinking. :D I have an appointment with an Ortho next week  to see what he can do for me.
Needless to say, the scheduled elliptical WO and all HIIT workouts are hereby canceled until further notice. I will keep up with the resistance stuff and try to figure out someway to elevate the heart rate-

Well, I don't know about backgammon :p but it does sound like racquetball may be a bit much :(. I used to really enjoy it too but... we need to respect our bodies a bit more than we used to, right :slywink:?

Hi there, I haven't done anything (studying does not count)for several days and don't feel very proud about it.
I should hope not   !
I feel a bit low, probably due to lack of sun.
Lack of sun.... or lack of exercise :suspicious:?????
However, as Shadow's student I know perfectly well that I have to do something about it:
Aha - you are definitely getting a bit more on my good side there :p!
... what about some 15-20 minutes of M&S?
That would go far in redeeming your sorry self . Not that you'd be totally forgiven - but you'd definitely be headed in the right direction :p.
Hopefully, I'll report in a short while...
Fingers crossed!!!!

Dear Shadow,
Sorry to report that I have re-injured my right knee.
Oh no, Monty :(!!!!
This is a very old injury from 40 YA (never had it fixed:() that recurs when I do something stup.... uh, without thinking.
Sadly, I know just what you mean, Monty  .
I have an appointment with an Ortho next week to see what he can do for me.
I hope there's something that can be done that isn't too invasive !!!
Needless to say, the scheduled elliptical WO and all HIIT workouts are hereby canceled until further notice.
I should hope so! They'll still be there when you're able to do them again without further injury :).
I will keep up with the resistance stuff and try to figure out someway to elevate the heart rate-
Awesome :D!

Just making sure you were still with us here :p! Oh boy ... nothing like car repairs - or waiting for them to get done !

It's not a repair, just the annual MOT (a legal requirement to check all cars that are more than three years old are still roadworthy) plus the routine stuff like changing oil, filters, topping up the anti-freeze &c. At least they provide decent coffee at the garage, so I take a carton of cream (they give you nasty plastic imitation stuff) and a book, and it's not too bad.

No walk yesterday as, surprise surprise, the pavements were wet again from overnight rain. No organised indoor exercise either, but I had an on-line grocery shop delivery, so I had to carry umpteen bags from just inside the front door to the back of the house, empty them onto the floor, check that I had everything I paid for, and then put it all away. So, much carrying, bending, lifting and stretching.

Today I will be out walking twice, first to get a long overdue haircut and later to the dentist as I have some discomfort, ironic when I haven't been eating sugar for 3 months but I suppose the damage was done long ago :(

It's turned out to be repairs after all, because the car wouldn't start, so I've had to arrange someone to come and collect it. It's just the battery, I think. So I'm at home with no excuse, except that I'm expecting them to turn up for the car at any moment.

Some light Stretching before breakfast is in order for today. This is also Toni's day to do her magic on me. This afternoon she'll be putting me through intensive stretching manuevers(which I might add can be a bit uncomfortable at times) followed by deep tissue message.

Tomorrow back to my regular workout.

A good friend and neighbor gave me a set of three resistance bands of varying strengths, along with an instruction book and dvd. I've never used bands before so I'll be reading the book and watching the dvd.

Everybody have a good day and keep on moving.

Bill, I used a bowflex for 4 years which is similar to the bands. It did it's job but was a bit uncomfortable for my old bones. I used a res band in rehab for a shoulder issue with great success. Let us know how it works out for you.

That's the problem with fixing things.... when they're not working, there is no waffling over what's best. I would hope, though, that you continue with the stairs. Stick with the stairs Amy!! You'll be glad you did. :)

DS and I are meeting this afternoon for a lower body workout. I promised her something diabolical, so I have to come up with a good plan! I may just have to throw some squats in there.... She hates them almost as much as lunges I think. :p I don't do squats much anymore, but feel ok about it with having someone there to spot. I have a pretty good ab workout planned as well, no crunches but plenty of pain! (the good kind)

Carol you may be stuck at home but there's plenty of body weight stuff you can do. I know you'll get something done, you're so consistent with your exercise it's quite inspiring. :D

I didn't do my regular exercise routine today. :paranoid: Instead I experimented around with the resistance bands. I like them better than the dumbbells, more versatile. I see now that they have workouts for lower and Upper body, so I will watch them later and see if they will suit my purposes, rather than having to figure out my own. My day/week has not started as I planned it, and I have no report of resistance exercise to make, nor will I, even though it is still only just gone midday :D

Just as I was having my breakfast shake I got the offer of a cancellation appointment to have my tooth extracted, so I agreed rather than have to wait until 21st January. I am not allowed to do vigorous exercise for a few days. I asked about resistance with my tubes, and was told not today or tomorrow, and see how I feel, and whether I have had any problems with the extraction site, on Wednesday. The dentist offered to write me a note :exclamation: but I explained that you were in the US so not to bother :)
