Okay gang, I'm getting the thread up early because I want all of you to come up with a plan for the month and report in exactly what you have in mind for the month! No more slacking - the holidays are over and it's time to get to business !
Some of you have already indicated your goals and it looks like we have some great plans for the new month and the new year! Of course, I expect all of you to keep whatever limitations you have in mind when you set your goals. Injuries and set backs are NOT what we're aiming for. I would much rather have everyone taking small steps than to leap forward only to end up falling behind.
AND, I fully expect to hear from everyone this week. There are several who have been quite absent lately  and I'm really hoping you're not wanting to start out the year with a "naughty" check by your name ! Believe me, I will point fingers and name names if I have to :slywink:.

OK. With a couple of glasses of wine talking inside me I will try
Way back when, before teeth and central heating pumps intervened, I was going to try the resistance videos with my tubes. I can't remember which way round it was going to be, but I'll do upper body M-W-F, and lower body T-TH. Thinnest band at first, and just once through to get the hang of it, and try to keep 'good form'. See, I've learnt the lingo :lol: Just need to do the darn stuff now

I'm stone cold sober this morning, and I knew exactly what I had committed to. (Hey! Who has stolen the laughing smilie? Is the forum limited as to number or summat?)
Good morning NW and dear Shadow,
HIIT for 10 minutes on the elliptical (5 minutes hi intensity-90% full bore) with no ill effects other than rubber legs :)
Isometrics are planned for later this am.
Off to a good start, right Shadow?
PS. I picked up 3 # over the holidays.

Not that it will help but I did the same thing for the first time in the all the years I've done this . Maybe it's associated with the Blue Moon :slywink: . Fingers crossed we both get rid of it soon, how's that ?

Hi Shad ...ol buddy... friend.... leader of the pack . I may (maybe not) be one of the slackers you mentioned earlier.... don't know for sure.:D:rolleyes::mad:
Anyway, I had company with 2 little grand blessings all this past week so didn't do anything exercise wise but I sure did eat badly :eek:and now we (dh and I) remember why we love low carbing so much---we feel so much better !!
Anyway, for my January challenge I am going to commit to 4 exercise days per week with 3 being resistance and 1 being cardio. I plan to alternate with bands, weights and large exercise ball on the resistance . I will start today and report back later.
Love you Shadow !!

checking in to save Shadow the 6 letters in her naughty list, although, from moving and shaking I haven't been naughty (no slovenly, couch potato behavior,) but from reporting, yes...I haven't even come close to the nice (ok I'm 5 it's very concrete naughty/nice.) Well, actually we did take them for a little walk one day but it really turned cold on us here and they both had bad colds--which dh is now taking--and I have been having some stomach virus issues all week.
All in all it was great to see them but I hope so much that they will come back to visit next time in the spring or summer months so we can get out side and go to the river and etc. Winter time visits are so iffy.

Please take me off your naughty list :)
I have just done a 7 minute upper body work out with my lightest tube. I found it quite difficult to keep up with the instructor, so I didn't do quite all the repeats that she did, but that will right itself as I get more familiar with it.
One thing that I did notice was that I found it almost impossible to get my hands together over my head whilst standing with one foot on the middle of the tube. I don't know whether that was because I am tall, or whether it is because I am new to this. Presumably the latter as the tubes are standard length, so presumably meant for everyone from a tall man to a petite woman. So it will be interesting to see how much that particular ability improves - my measure of progress, I suppose.
Done this am.
resistance wo and 12 mins RITP on bike.
Wkly plan: M W F resistance Tues and Sat HIIT
Isometrics and RITP whenever I feel like it
DW insisted I post a picture and caught me by surprise. I don't who that OF is tho.

Hi, y'all,
My ISP at home has been down since last Monday, just now was repaired today. Have missed you all.
Have been battling asthmatic acute bronchitis since New Years eve, went to MD today, started on meds, antibiotics, etc.
Today, I did Callanetics toning exercises. Will take a few days off from Body Flex tape and the cardio as that would get me coughing too much and make me sob.

Hi Claudette I hope you get to feeling better ---and you too Carol. Boy this is the season for sickness isn't it. Mine was stomach virus and lasted a full week but I am feeling very well now. Getting back on my low carb woe has certainly made me feel better too.
I did 8 min. on the elliptical this morning, got a phone call and tried once to get back to it and got interrupted again and never made it back. I did do 3 flights of stairs also. Not much in the way of exercise today but I will do it early tomorrow.
Rode the recumbent bike for 40 minutes tonight.

Carol, I don't think it's a good idea to exercise hard if you have an infection.
Claudette, I hope your breathing is better.
I started my time away by getting a nasty cold, then it was Christmas, and Shadow wasn't there to frighten me, so I'm afraid I didn't exercise much. I won't claim great enthusiasm, but I am feeling ready to start moving again. I always start to feel a bit stiff and achy if I don't move enough, and also, watching as it gets harder for my parents to get up and down makes me aware that it's a good idea to do what I can now to postpone future problems as long as possible.

I have just tried the 5 minute lower body work out with the tube. Not so good :( I am OK doing squats with both feet planted firmly hip width apart, but when it came to pushing one leg out to the side as I came up I wobbled too much as balance, or rather the lack of it, came into play. Lunges are doable, but I am terrible at them. I shall persevere as it is boring on the naughty step :D

I agree with Mitra (hey, remember her ????). I know that sometimes moving can release tension, lactic acid, etc and make us feel better and that we actually get more stiff if we don't move. So IF you feel up to it, then I would say to TRY - but not full steam ahead. Just enough to get the blood flowing :).

Ah - but keep in mind that over-exercising or excessive focus on our problem areas can actually make them worse in that we build a lot of muscle underneath the fat - but as long as the fat layer is there, the muscle just makes it bulge out more. See what I mean? It's not that the ab work is not good, per se, just that too much is going to make them appear worse :). Besides, the abs are muscle too and just like any other muscle, they need a rest between workouts .

I'll report later on how it went.

Well done, Karole :D! But now you know the pressure is on to get that elliptical done, right ?????
yesterday was a wipe out
DW had plans to go to Rehoboth which included me so I did not get much done except stretching- I am definitely a morning exerciser.
Lunch was also not so good as our favorite sandwich spot had a rare roast beef, provolone, tomato and horseradish mayo/mustard stuffed into a half a loaf of ciabatta (delicious). I didn't hesitate to chow down as it was a late lunch and we were ravenous.
Today, a HIIT on the elliptical along with light resistance stuff. A double but tomorrow will be more resistance and isometrics.

Lunch was also not so good as our favorite sandwich spot had a rare roast beef, provolone, tomato and horseradish mayo/mustard stuffed into a half a loaf of ciabatta (delicious). I didn't hesitate to chow down as it was a late lunch and we were ravenous.
I'm sure you scolded yourself enough for that one so I'll just move on :p !
Today, a HIIT on the elliptical along with light resistance stuff. A double but tomorrow will be more resistance and isometrics.
Sounds great, Monty !

Today was a bit easier than yesterday. Not so much that it was easier to get started - my mind was as uncooperative as ever. But once I did start, my body was moving more easily.

Gym with sis went well enough I guess. I wimped out a bit but got through everything.
I don't think it's considered wimping out if you're not feeling well, Jilly :). Now if you felt perfectly fine & then didn't give it your all, THAT would be wimping out .
I will do a workout on my own tomorrow at the resort before I get my body scrub and massage at the spa. :p Tough life.
Gosh - my heart bleeds for you ! But you may want to just rest and enjoy the pampering. You might find you end up feeling a lot better for having taken some time off :).

Thanks, Shadow for the info on overdoing the abd exercises. Makes sense.
Still feeling not up to par, went back to work, but at a slower pace.
Tonight, did a modified Body Flex aerobic/toning tape; the breathing exercises help clear out my lungs. Did not want to wear myself out.

I did phase 1 day 1 with Jillian Micheal's IFit for the Treadmill. It was a 20 min workout. It got up to 3.4 miles an hour and a 7% incline. Went 1.2 miles. It doesn't seem like much, but I was sweating and breathing hard:lol:

Travel disruption due to snow caused my DS1 to return home yesterday morning, so bang went any chance of exercise :( However I have done both upper and lower body today. Will probably give tomorrow a miss and do upper body on Saturday, returning to my original schedule on Monday.
I have now made a big enough space to do my resistance tube work in the bedroom, so privacy issues are now eliminated, and I will have to invent a different excuse :D:D:D
I find it comforting to exercise just to warm up. we are just not acclimated to this cold. :( I know some of you have it far worse.:jawDrop:

It is everywhere, bad in different ways in different areas, certainly more snow than us southern wimps are used to  For the last 20 years or so we have had snow once or twice a year in London, but only for a few days at a time, if that. They're talking about temperatures of -8°C or colder even here in the south tonight. I remember it getting that cold for a night or two maybe twenty five years or so ago, but our windows and heating system just aren't intended to cope with this sort of weather. I've just been looking at the five day forecast, which doesn't show any temperatures above freezing. I didn't realise they were expecting it to go on for another couple of weeks .

Well, it wasn't exactly what I would call "moving and shaking," but I did the "Sit and Be Fit" video. It was primarily stretching and some light resistance band work. However, it was more than I've done in the 15 weeks since I broke my knee. So, it'll have to do until I'm completely weightbearing and can work that knee more.

Yes it is, for the most part. I do have days that aren't that demanding, but most are. I work in a factory, and stand all day long. Some jobs require me to just stand and use my upper body and some jobs require me to walk a lot or move my whole body a lot. But either way I'm usually exhausted when I get home. It's even worse in the summer, because the plant doesn't have air conditioning. But I hoping the more I use the treadmill, the more energy I will have to use it.:D
I did workout 2 of the Ifit today, went 1 mile, incline got up to 6% and speed got up to 3.5, 20 mins. I didn't think I would make it through because I've been sick all week and I'm tired, but I did...Yay!
