Okay gang, we are now entering a new month. I'm getting this thread up early so you can write out your plan and know what your goals are this month.
Your challenge for February is to love yourself. We always take time to love & tend to others - we need to do it for ourselves, too. When you are strong and healthy, you are better able to deal with the stresses and challenges life throws our way.
So - here is what you have to do:
1. Plan, in ink, your exercise days. Remember to challenge yourself. If you don't push out of your comfort zone, you're too complacent and it's not doing you as much good as if you challenge yourself. Always make your workout count!
2. Do one small thing for yourself every day. Something you WANT to do and something you ENJOY doing. Nothing that's required. It can be to read a chapter in a book, gaze at the stars, sleep in a half hour some morning, lock yourself in the bathroom for a nice long soak - just whatever YOU want to do.
Now, I think Jilly is having surgery - but I also know she can do something nice for herself each day. So hopefully she'll check in as often as she can and let us know how she's doing. (Hope you're "listening" Jilly ;) )!
The rest of you have NO excuse and I expect to see some good plans - AND hear some good reports each and every day! Even if it's your "rest" day, you still have to do something for yourself - and you need to report it or you know what will happen !

Good grief, you're never satisfied . I've exercise for a whole month, and now you want me to do more . Well, I've just emailed my yoga teacher about having a lesson sometime soon, so I'll wait for that, then we'll adjust things as appropriate when I see him.
I'm still struggling with hormones to some degree. Not such complete exhaustion as I had a year or so ago, but I still find that if I make the work a bit too hard, I'll just end up curled up in tears on the mat, which is very disconcerting, and not what I'm used to :peeved:. So I don't think I'll be doing Slow Burn again just yet.

My plan for February is to do 5 days a week on the treadmill. I hoping to loss 8lbs or more in Feb. also.

Oh dear heavens - that would be disconcerting !!! I guess it's a good thing you prefer yoga ;) but that situation would definitely drive me crazy :(!

Sounds like a good plan, Sheila! Don't forget to work on your pampering list, too ;)!
Day off today other than 10 min on bike and stretching.
As for a new plan, could lie to you and tell what wonderful things I have up my sleeve....but I won't and I don't.
My plan remains resistance training at least 3 x wk, stretching these old bones everyday, occasional hiit on elliptical and RITP on bike until weather allows more outdoor stuff.
I will say I like the bands more every time I use them. ..they have taken over the means of providing resistance (still combine them with iso resistance)- don't feel in any danger of overdoing the workout.
So Dearest, preservation of strength and increasing range of motion are my priorities. Reasonable, eh????

Nothing wrong with that, especially since you recently did a change with the bands. As long as you're not bored - and your workouts are still effective - that is what counts . I just like to remind people to not do the same thing over and over and expect different results :slywink:. You know what they call that, right ?

I love bands and they can really hit spots that machines & free weights won't .

VERY reasonable, dear Monty :D!

Feb. 1st. :peeved: My goal for the month is to be patient with my recovery. I don't want to do anything to prolong it. I have done what I can to make it easy for DH to help me out and I'm sure he'll take care of me well.
I am a bit concerned about the layoff and getting back at it when I'm healed. I had a lot of trouble with motivation to exercise in Oct. and Nov. Now that I'm back in the swing it's going really well and I am enjoying it very much. Just have to keep that in mind and hopefully my sister will help push me a bit. I'm going to chat with her about that, tell her to kick my a#$ into going if need be.
But first a few weeks of relaxing and catching up on a bunch of reading. I'll be stopping in to check on everyones progress. ;)
One more workout tomorrow, upper body. :D
Jilly
checkin in- lots to do this morning as we are expecting the rare 4-6 " snow (a mere dusting for some of you)

Have you got some kind of spy camera trained on me?
I've been spending too much time for myself on watching Aussie Open Tennis which has been on here from first thing in the morning until lunchtime or beyond :o but it finishes tomorrow, so I will be back to trying to establish my 2 week workout routine as a habit, first thing in the day. I have no real excuses (until the Aussie Open next year :D) as it is not weather dependent. Just as well as we woke to an unexpected snow cover this morning :(
My afternoons this week have been spent on something essential for DS1, involving internet researching and legal type letter drafting, but that will be finished and sent off this weekend, and I can get to doing more of the other things that I want to do. Not sure about reporting all of my vices here though ;)

My workout plans for February will have to be put off till after I see my doctor. Which is tomorrow. I'll be getting my monthly check up and weighin. At the appointment I'll be asking him about the exercising I plan to do. Hopefully I'll be able to get busy on the resistance bands.
For today I did my morning routine of stretching and later today some light leg exercises.
the morning was spent digging out of a 12' snow fall with a shovel that hadn't been used in 16 years.... had to fill the bird feeders (6) which are spread around a 1/4 acre yard. thankfully, it was light fluffy stuff.
That's my wo for the day

Down 1.6 lbs this week:D

Hi, Just finished 17 min. of upper body with my five pounders so that's done.
I plan to do a 15 min. meditation segment daily as a way to be good to myself for the month of February. Exercise 5 times per weelk.
We have a range of opinion about our snowfall around here. Some said they got 8, some 6 or so. It sure wasn't 12 inches, thank goodness.
are you sure you weren't exaggerating a little to say 12'
Dear Shadow, must have been a freudian slip....guess it felt like feet instead of inches. what I measured in 3 spots was 11" to 14" so 12" is probably accurate. also we were expecting 4-6.
Yes, that shovel has not been used for a long time (or very much as it still had some of the wrapping on it). next month while in Florida Keys, I'll recall this with fondness:rolleyes:

Hopefully I can spare Monty his apparent discomfort at reporting in first ;)
OK. I have done double the amount of squats this morning, and I think I am going to feel that tomorrow :(
My treat to myself is going to be to finish my library book (the eighth in a seris of 9 historical novels about a family in Cornwall, and it is not Poldark). If I finish it early enough I am going to have a snooze before DH gets home. All his fault as I went to bed at 10.30 last night only to wake when he came up at gone midnight :mad:
NW- by my calculation it is about 5 am in London and you have already finished the WO?? you be my hero.
Dear Shadow, completed this morning= 8 minute HIIT on the ellipt followed by 20 minute band resistance wo.
The following is part of the challenge post of this am
the weigh-in this morning showed a 1# gain. It's ok cause clothes are fitting a bit loose but it would be nice to see some movement in the scale :( Perhaps 180-184 is my new optimum level. I will soon be 73 and am still close to 6' tall (shrinkage you know) and my college weight was 175-178 (what a memory):D. So maybe getting back to 174-175 is unrealistic without a severe restrictive diet which I wont do.
Shadow has kept me exercise conscious so that part is in line.
I'll go with the flow, weigh in once/month, follow the PP book and accept what is.
Sound like a plan??

I think you should maybe accept the 180 - 184 range, Monty . I found when I accepted a higher range than goal, I lost a bit more after accepting that my body wanted to stabilize where it was. So if that happens for you, good. If not, that range is still mighty close to your college weight, dear Monty :).

Today I did 20 mins of arc trainer and 10 mins of rowing. I didn't do any lifting, just the endurance. I'm thinking of shuffling my routine around to shake things up, but I can't bear to just do cardio. How would you suggest I arrange my month?
It also occurred to me that last summer when I lost six pounds in a week, I had no exercise besides walking activity. You couldn't even call it cardio, because my knees kept me slow. I wonder if there's a connection.

If you go to an endurance routine (lighter wts, faster reps), that in and of itself is a big enough change from lifting for strength. Of course, this would also include lightening whatever tension/incline you're using on the cardio machines and just going lighter/faster on those too ;). You could even forgo the weight machines & try bands, medicine balls, stability ball, free weights or even non-weighted exercises like mini-squats/lunges, push ups, etc. The mini-squats/lunges shouldn't stress your knees but would be great for your legs. Or you could even focus on floor work for the legs if you felt so compelled.
It also occurred to me that last summer when I lost six pounds in a week, I had no exercise besides walking activity. You couldn't even call it cardio, because my knees kept me slow. I wonder if there's a connection.
If it's been since last summer since you took a "rest" week, then I definitely think one is in order ! There is absolutely nothing wrong with resting the muscles for a week & not focusing on cardio. I'm not suggestion you do nothing but veg, ya know  - walks are perfectly fine. But use the week to focus your mind and plan your next phase (be it endurance or something else). Your body will thank you :).
Mind you, if I thought the week off would derail you, I'd never suggest it ! I DO expect you to get right back on the horse and ride again at the end of the week's rest, ya know!
And I see you're not reporting your lovin' either !
Re-edit: What about boxing? I really enjoy MMA Boxing and it's great for the upper body. With enough "oomph" in the punches/jabs, it is considered a low impact cardio form :).

Also has a training dvd with it and a chart to keep track of things. I haven't got a chance to see the dvd yet but will shortly.
(this will call for a majorly large set of gold stars , and I do hope you can dig them up--I know how you love to hoard them away from me):D

I'm taking today as a rest day, my head is hurting, not bad, but it is, so I'm going to take a break. Although the job I had today, I walked about 4 miles in an 8 hr day, and it was fast paced, so maybe that will account for a little exercise.
It always counts, Sheila :)! Sounds like you definitely need to find something to show yourself some lovin' today to get rid of that nasty headache ;)!

Hi all!
I walked and walked yesterday as I went through to big grocery stores for over 5 hours. I looked at clothes, clearance aisle, healthy & beauty, new garden items, housewares, hardware, quilts and drapes, pet aisle, then, shopped for my groceries. My ankles are in soooo much pain. It feels like I'm walking on nubs.:( I also had to try and keep my feet and legs from going into charlie horses all last night. So, I didn't sleep well at all.!!!!
Good think is - I would call that a lot of exercise. Probably more than I have gotten in the last 2 months.!!!:o I just needed to get out of the house and get in change of scenery.:) Shopping clears my mind of business stress!
Everyone have a good evening!

If you go to an endurance routine (lighter wts, faster reps), that in and of itself is a big enough change from lifting for strength. I think I'll try that for the rest of this week, go back to lifting next week, and alternate for a while....or even non-weighted exercises like mini-squats/lunges, push ups, etc. The mini-squats/lunges shouldn't stress your knees but would be great for your legs. Or you could even focus on floor work for the legs if you felt so compelled.Body weight exercises are kind of handy. I've done wall push-ups for a while and then let them slide. I also find that doing my tai chi stretches just before bed helps with the leg cramp situation.
If it's been since last summer since you took a "rest" week, then I definitely think one is in order ! Um, I've had two all year, imposed by vacations. There is absolutely nothing wrong with resting the muscles for a week & not focusing on cardio. I'm not suggestion you do nothing but veg, ya know  - walks are perfectly fine. But use the week to focus your mind and plan your next phase (be it endurance or something else). Your body will thank you :).I will ponder on that, Shadow.
Mind you, if I thought the week off would derail you, I'd never suggest it ! I DO expect you to get right back on the horse and ride again at the end of the week's rest, ya know!Well, I DO have a history of slacking off, you know! :paranoid: However, I like the feeling of rested muscles after a few days off.
What about boxing? I really enjoy MMA Boxing and it's great for the upper body. With enough "oomph" in the punches/jabs, it is considered a low impact cardio form :).Hey, that's really novel! I don't think my gym has the equipment, though. You must have a very wide range of interests!
Today was a rest day because of my Irish jam. Tomorrow I'll do another round of endurance with light weights. Thanks for the advice, girlfriend! :)

I must admit that some time in France was definitely a factor in the choice of course. My husband really prefers Italy, so I haven't been to France for ages. Checking in. My legs are still complaining about squats :( but it didn't stop me doing my upper body workout.
My treat was to order some fabric to make some better fitting summer tops, but I won't actually start them for a while in the hope that I can get away with a smaller size, at least round my backside.
Today in am
warm up stretching and medium bands and UB WO with heavy band consisting of chest, shoulders, upper and lower back, triceps and biceps. 2 exercises each except for back at slow pace.

Honestly, for the first 10 years I exercised, I didn't take a break. But now that I'm wiser ;) I know that they won't stop the world from turning and my body & mind both appreciate the break now and again.
Well, I DO have a history of slacking off, you know!

Hey, that's really novel! I don't think my gym has the equipment, though. You must have a very wide range of interests!
No - just trying to get variety in where I can. For the boxing (and kickboxing, for that matter) I have no equipment either. I occasionally wear light ankle weights or weighted gloves for it but not always. If you put enough vigor into the punches & jabs, you don't really need them. You can always "shadow box" without equipment. You never know - you just might start a new trend :slywink:!
Tomorrow I'll do another round of endurance with light weights. Thanks for the advice, girlfriend! :)

I watched my new dvd for my weights and did them along with the gal, but I am sorely dissapointed in the dvd---she just demos the exercises a bit and then demos another one---leaving me to have to remember them and do them correctly all on my own.
I like to do it with them and see them sweat like I am. But oh well, I wrote them all down and will do the proper number of sets and reps she mentioned...but not til tomorrow as today was cardio day and I did 20 min. already on the elliptical. Today , just to please you, I did intervals on the elliptical to shake things up a bit.

Today, body flex aerobic/toning tape, callanetics for abd/waist 15 minutes from her book. Tonight, if still raining, 15 minutes or however I can go on the mini-trampoline.
Colleague told me yesterday to buy new smaller lab coats, (I had mine off) as she said, "wow, you are losing inches or weight or something, those big lab coats don't do you justice!".
It is always nice when others notice! :)
Have a great day, all.

Way to go Claudette !! So very nice when someone notices and lets you know, isn't it !!! I'd take the advice ---nothing like new clothing to perk things up.
Okay, reporting in that I have already bit the bullet for the day. I used my new weights and as per Ammy's advice I watched the dvd then shut it off as I did that exercise then turned it back on so I could watch her do the next one and repeat it. It took 20 min. to complete counting the stretching too. I think that will work very nicely. Not as well as it would if she would have done the complete routine with me, but perhaps I will find one that does that. I have one that does that but it has a lot of cardio built in and not as much of the true weights.
Anyhoo, I got 'er done for the day and now can concentrate on helping my dh put up my new vertical blinds which arrived yesterday. We put one window up yesterday and have one more to go. I think I am really going to like these things. I've waited about 4 years for them so I did exercise patience there---for which I know I will get no credit what so ever from Shadow. I will get some lower body exercise helping put them up however, as I was up and down off the chair several times yesterday helping to hold it up and etc. So I do expect credit there.:D:D

I want some company !!! Get back here Ammy and Monty and Mitra !:(;)
Whew am I pooped, we just finished the last of the blinds and um mmmm they do look good and eliminate the glare on the tv set too. Love them.
But, my back is now hurting---don't know if it was the new weight routine or just to much going on with the installation. A nice hot bath is in order !!
Did I ever mention I hate winter??? Well, it is snowing again !:mad::(:peeved:

Karole, I'll give you all the support I can but, am not going on the Shadow naughty list again. For that u are on your own.
We've got your storm headed this way and I hate winter also.

A whole lot better, thanks for asking Shadow. It felt good to exercise and be able to breathe at the same time. I felt really good after the workout too:D Glad to be back

Good evening all!
I had a pretty good day! I started it out with some light morning stretching. Then later in the afternoon Toni arrived for my weekly stretching and massage session.
Tomorrow I get to play the role of pincushion.
I worked at the feline rescue tonight, so about an hour of bending and reaching and squatting.
Then I had 30minutes alone with Frasier (one of the kitties). He climbed onto my lap and insisted I pet him...for 30 minutes!!! that's quite an arm workout!
It was wonderful.
When I got home I shoveled. Well, more like I pushed snow. It kept me moving but wasn't back breaking work.

I have done my lower body squats, and done another 10 minutes on my exercise bike.
I've got a horrible feeling that I am beginning to like this, and Karole will stop speaking to me ;)

((((Carol)))) I hope you get to feeling better soon !! I think you are wise to curtail your exercises til you are up to par.
All seriousness aside, I just hate it when I am forced to stop my athletic endeavors in any way. It makes me downright mad if I have to give up my resistance routines even for one single day !!:D:D:D:D
Back to serious... I did 20 min. on the elliptical this morning and did the interval thingey again. It actually makes the time go a little faster when I do the intervals. I got to the 20 min. mark and it only felt like...well 20 min. !
12 minutes on bike and I intend to do some res band work - DW and I went out to breakfast (had to get out as we might be stuck until Monday w the snow) so I did not get it done first thing.
It seems like one of our group gets well and another gets sick. Maybe we are working out too much :jawDrop::lol:

Friday was a good day. I started out with some vigorous stretching, which I'll probably pay for with some sore joints. I'm hoding of on my attempts at walking. Doys gone for the weekend and with my balance problems I don't want to fall and injure my self with noone around.

Don't blame you Bill, no point in tempting fate.
I just finished my exercise routine for the day. I am fully aware of my muscles at the moment--they feel like jello. I dragged out my Over 50 dvd which makes you do a full body work out. I figured I needed to do lower body work as I haven't done much in a while. Took me 40 min. to complete all of them......off to find the couch !!
Carol...you crack me up!! That's was funny!!
Did I write my mall walking in the wrong place? I don't see it here.
I walked the mall on Friday night...30 minutes, working on the muscles my PT said I am NOT using, but NEED to be using so my knees stop hurting!

Early morning stretch and some leg raises.
I gotta say that test I went through yesterday was quite an experience. Thin needles similar to acupuncture needles were inserted at various locations from shoulders to toes. Small charges of electricity was applied to the needles at various points. Strange sensation to say the least! When I jokingly preferred to becoming a pincushion...well I wasn't far off! He said there appears to be reaction delay in some areas. He has to review the results further!

Bill, I didn't say anything before because I didn't want to make you anxious in any way, but I have had that, or a similar test, done to my right leg, and I hated it. After the first few I tensed up because I knew the shock would be coming. Whoever was doing it kept yelling at me to relax, but I just couldn't :(:(

I didn't have much trouble with it. I just closed my eyes and stayed as relaxed as I could. It was a bit of a 'shocker' when that first little charge was applied!
