I began PP in May 2003 later combining it with PPLP. Continuing PP/PPLP has meant a world of change for me. On June 3 I ran my 4th 5K race and won my age group (60 and up). There were not many entrants but I did win. I finished 41st overall out of 102 starters. When I started I could only walk due to knee pain when attempting to run. After losing 30 pounds I can run the 3.1 miles--no problem. Now I'm looking for more 5K's in the area. The next I know about are in October (Southern Pines Autumfest) and November (Pinehurst Turkey Trot).
On June 5 I had my lipid profile done. I've got the doctors in Pinehurst talking about my case in their meetings. My previous test showed that just about all of my LDL is sub-class A with very little sub-class B. They had never seen numbers like I produced. They were discussing whether or not to "treat me" for my high LDL which was 279 (87.7% sub-class A and 12.3% sub-class B). Total was 374, HDL was 77, Tri was 88.
After that report (Dec 2005) I increased my No-flush Niacin to 1500 mg per day from 1000 mg per day. All else stayed about the same..eating, exercise, etc.
My latest report is as follows:
Total Cholesterol 297
LDL 215
HDL 71
Triglycerides 54
I had the standard profile done due to the costs of the in depth profile.
It appears that the Niacin is helping bring down my total LDL, not that I was overly concerned about it. I was trying to keep the doctor at bay the best I could. I think I have won my doctor over and he's not pushing pills toward me anymore.
Now I will just be concerned with the levels of HDL and Triglycerides. As stated in PPLP these are the two most important numbers.
To date everyting I have done based on PPLP has worked. There's a lot in the book and I have done most of them. I am an upper level Hedonist bordering on Dillatante and committed to PP/PPLP for life. Without this plan I would have probably already had a heart attack and being off all my medications has been wonderful, too. No 80mg of Zocor (with loss of memory regarding names), no high blood pressure meds, and no acid reflux meds.
It's just too sad that more people do not use this plan. I see many people every day who would benefit greatly from PPLP but do not say anything unless they ask questions. To date no one has started the plan. They say I eat more healthy than anyone they know and seem to admire what I have done but aren't willing to give up their breads, sweets, pastas, potatoes and rice for their own health and longevity. It's just too sad; they're my friends.
