Hi there,

I'm following a very strict diet called Cohens. It's based on pretty much no carb (just crisp bread) & protein/veg meals. I can have yoghurt in the morning and i'm really missing my morning coffee because i can't have milk. Just wondering, is cream in the same protein 'family' as yoghurt or cheese? I can only have one protein type at a time. Any help is much appreciated.
:)

thanks.

Not familiar with Cohens diet. I did a little searching on the web - everything I found implies that you would be working closely with a practioner on your customized plan, so it seems like the best answer would be there. that said - I'll take a crack at the question.

Cream obviously comes from milk and so would potentially have whey and casein like all milk products. However, in 1 TBSP of heavy cream, there are only 1.3 cal from protein- since protein has 4 cal/gm - I think this be would around 1g of protein total. Can't see how that would effect you even if it weren't related to yogurt. That is, I would think you could have it at other times as well.

Heavy cream has fewer carbs than yogurt, <0.4g per 1T (yogurt has 0.5-1g/T, depending on how much sugar the bacteria eat and if milk solids are added to it).

Milk, cream, yogurt & cheese all come from cow's milk, so presumably from the same "protein family". Presumably milk is not allowed because it has higher carbs or because skim milk often has milk solids (and thus more milk protein) added.

Real cream has a higher percent fat, fewer carbs than yogurt and therefore less protein, so it is allowed by many LC diets that do not allow yogurt. Steer clear of fake or "no/low-fat" cream that has added milk solids, trans fats & other crap.

 Thanks for your replies. I think i'll sneak a tbs of cream in every now and then. I don't think i'm supposed to (it's a rapid loss program) but as long as it doesn't affect ketosis i should be right.

Thanks again.

With heavy/whipping cream (33-35% fat) I only need 1 teaspoon to 1/2 tablespoon (5-7.5 ml) per 10 oz (285 ml) mug of coffee, <0.2g carbs & 16-25 calories - a decadent bargain!

One mug is really satisfying; now I find coffee with milk or light cream (10% fat) watery and blah.

So, after the "quick weight loss" what do you do?
Do you progress to another level, or change your menu altogether?

After the initial weight loss period, they give you a refeeding program according to monthly blood tests. That's to introduce your body slowly to the foods you've been missing. After that they give you life maintenance guidelines. The refeed is really important judging from others' response to the program. If they don't do the refeed, they end up putting all the weight back on again. Most maintain if they do it properly.
