Best way to say Be Mine, Valentine to a Low Carb Love

Traditionally, of course, it’s ‘sweets for your sweetie’ on Valentine’s Day, but what if your sweetie eschews sugar and carbs?  Then sweets are the last thing he or she might appreciate.  So what to do?  There’s always champagne or flowers or a nice dinner out, but why not think about giving something your beloved will actually relish — a savory gift that keeps on giving?

    Hi Dr. Eades:
    What is your position on deducting sugar alcohol from carb count? I don’t recall this being part of the calculation in your protein power program in 1996. I used your program and went from 232 to 170 rapidly. Saved my life! I had your paperback, memorized, highlighted, pages dog-eared and lost it a few years ago in a recent move. It worked so fast and so well, people asked me what I was doing and I turned several people on to it and they experienced the same excellent success. It was such a fabulous program. Of course back then, we didn’t have all this other stuff, like shakes, bars, candy, etc. We just looked on the label and subtracted the fiber from the carbs and that was how many carbs we were consuming. Thank you for your time.

      Hey, Lisa – I wrote a blog post on sugar alcohols a few years ago and I’ll have to go look it up and maybe tweet it out or something. You’re correct that back in the ‘olden days’ when PP first came out, sugar alcohols were something added to sugar free chewing gum and not a lot else. So we said, subtract the fiber and you’re good to go and it encouraged people to eat foods that were fresh and whole and either didn’t have a lot of carb in them or had a lot of fiber in them. That all changed with the rampant introduction of sugar alcohols into the food chain. Sad to say, our ‘effective carb count’ philosophy in some ways paved the way for the explosion of them in processed foods. Some are more absorbable than others and if they aren’t absorbable to any great degree, they’re self limiting because they cause GI symptoms. As to what to do with them, we’ve evolved a bit over time as more and more have come onto the market and our stance at this point is to limit them by counting them as at least 1/3 of whatever their carb total is. Xylitol is one that at least has some beneficial other effects on health.

    Wow, awesome post. Great links about the best ways to make low-carb dishes using bacon. Dr Eades, I really wish you could give some tips on the best fruits and veggies to consume for getting pimple-free and soft skin.
