The lack of AC and the consequent lack of decent sleep are beginning to eat into my ever-present good cheer. It hasn’t helped that I’ve walked 18 holes of golf every day on a different course in the brutal heat. There has been no reprieve, not even while shopping—even the large supermarkets are hot. It’s hard to believe that people lived in this kind of heat in the American South for several centuries and wore wool suits. I’m glad that whoever invented air conditioning did it early in my lifetime, although I did grow up in the Ozarks and never had air conditioning in any house I lived in until I was in my 20s. I just don’t ever remember it being this uncomfortable.
